Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

“It is not fair to ask of others what you are not willing to do yourself.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt

Dear Readers:

Teamwork enables us to join forces with many people for superior results. Think of an orchestra, a band, a school, a community, a church, or even a club. They all function due to the concept of teamwork. Without a team, none of these organizations would exist in and of themselves. While each of us strives to do our best in contribution to the whole, each of us cannot do it all. It takes a team to build something lasting, worthwhile and unique. Any structure maintains its integrity by the competent and varied contributions of each member.

Just think of a band. Singly each person may be a strong musician; however, individually they cannot both put on a show and play the selections simultaneously. A professional worker handling the lighting, sound system and stage are required for the performance. And, most importantly so is the audience. Just begin to consider all the component parts of a production and you have the staggering idea of how monumental a task it can be to make even the simplest performance occur. Why? Because each of us has our role to perform, and we do best by sharing our talent and then asking for cooperation and assistance in areas wherein we are lacking. Teamwork is a much required asset in making our dream come true.

In an informative book called Meet the Orchestra by Ann Hayes and illustrated by Karmen Thompson, children are introduced to the instruments played in an orchestra. Not only is this educational, but it presents children the opportunity to see how instruments can be played alone or together. When combined in a performance, each instrument contributes to the outcome produced by every one of the performers. Surely, in this circumstance there is no “I” in team. All members including the conductor blend into one harmonious whole.

This weekend I attended several performances at a music fest. All of the bands were good, but I always look forward to hearing my favorite. This time however, one of the quartet was ill. As he told the audience at the beginning of the performance, he caught something crossing over the pond and was not himself. Other things went amiss too. The audio was off, the neighboring performance was very loud and their sound leached over into the band’s space, and finally an overly enthusiastic, although friendly, fan refused to take his seat. Exasperation crept overs the band’s faces, and it was apparent that this was not going to be their best performance. It was hard for them to continue, but they did. They played through all of the mishaps and performed for over one hour and thirty minutes. They concluded to two standing ovations. Was it their best performance? No. But the fans responded because the band performed. Neither gave up. Each supported the other as a team, and in the end a sincere “thank you” came from both sides of the stage with a promise from the band to do better the next night.

I have heard it stated that it is okay to fail. With each consecutive attempt, we just have to learn to fail better. The performance could have been cancelled, a scene could have been made over the fan who would not sit down, or the ill performer could have left the show to the remaining three, but the band stuck together as a family. Herein lies a better lesson than how to give a brilliant performance. The lesson I witnessed was, sink or swim we are all in this show together. We can fail, or we can make our best attempt at doing our very best. Even then, we can fail but at least we won’t be labelled quitters. By the way, the final two songs were exceptional. The audience sent their energy to the band, and the band bounced back to deliver their best performance right on schedule.

Lesson learned: When we do not worry about who gets the credit, everyone shares in the glory.

Be Your Very Best Always,
Judy Williamson

The Law of Success

Friendly Team Work
by Napoleon Hill

Everywhere and in everything friendly team work is a fundamental principle of growth and power. Nature is our authority for the soundness of this principle. Our body, for example, is one of nature’s most remarkable demonstrations of the power and value of team work.

The body consists of countless billions of cells, each of which serves a definite purpose in connection with the growth and maintenance of the whole. These cells are organized into groups known as organs, such as the heart, lungs, liver, brain, spinal cord, alimentary canal, veins and nerves. Each organ has its specific work to do. When one fails, the entire pattern is disrupted and some form of physical disorder follows.

Team work also plays an essential part in music. Harmony of voices in a choir, the blended tones of many musical instruments in an orchestra or band, are achieved through practiced coordination of effort: team work.

A successful play can be produced only by careful cooperation of the players, the director, the stage hands and everyone connected with the project.

The game of bridge provides another excellent example of the value of team work. And it is the absolute rule in the great American games of football, baseball and basketball.

Throughout life every great victory is supported by some kind of friendly team work. Sometimes the wearer of the crown of success owes their victory to the unselfish team work of their spouse; sometimes to an efficient secretary or business partner, or to a group of loyal associate workers who help him to carry out his plans. It is a mark of great wisdom when any man displays skill in winning the friendly cooperation of his associates.

Think and Grow Rich

The Master Key to Riches

Foundations for Success

The Little Book of Leadership

The Path to Riches in Think and Grow Rich

by Judith Williamson and Contributing Authors

Napoleon Hill often reminds us that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. This book offers you, the student, an extravaganza of teachers, guides for your journey, perhaps soul mates, who are certain that they have uncovered and applied the secret in Think and Grow Rich in their lives. Not only that, but they have greatly improved their lives due to their reading and application of this profound book. In concluding his book, Napoleon Hill quotes Emerson as he states: “If we are related, we have, through these pages, met.” Likewise, if you are a sincere seeker of the secret that Dr. Hill promises to deliver in his book, you will find the people in Path to Riches as family who will guide you in the direction of your search. Each contributor has given freely without compensation of their time and talent to aid you in your search for the truth. Each has gone the extra mile to contribute the “secret” that they uncovered in the hope that it will serve as a signpost for you as you travel towards life’s riches. May you have a special relationship with our contributors and remember to thank the ones in particular who helped your uncover the secret to your success!

Believe and Achieve

by W. Clement Stone

In 1952, W. Clement Stone and Napoleon Hill joined forces and philosophies. Stone added his Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) concept to Hill’s principles, resulting in the classic book, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude. The two men spent the next 10 years writing and lecturing about the story of success through PMA. Their formula was to become the foundation for virtually all modern motivational writing. Believe and Achieve explains exactly how the personal, intellectual, attitudinal, fraternal, and spiritual principles used by the likes of Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, and F. W. Woolworth—as well as modern achievers like Tom Monaghan, Mary Kay Ash, Larry King, and Steve Jobs—Believe & Achieve can be applied by you to reach your goals.

Believe and Achieve is not the last word on creating success; that story will continue to evolve as long as the human race endures. Instead, the Napoleon Hill Foundation hopes that it will be nothing more than the first words in the next chapter of your life: the first of many chapters in which success is the theme.
