Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” ~Henry David Thoreau

Dear Readers:

Have you ever thought about what Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Cousteau, Lincoln, Florence Nightingale, and others whose names today are household words played at as children? In years gone by, were there imaginary canvases, treasure hunts, carvings, teachings, court rooms, and hospital beds that positioned them for their lifelong work? Think back on your own early years and see if you can identify a slender thread, maybe even a rope, that you created and held on to that became your bowline, your tether, into your future role as an adult. Makes you sense sometimes that what you dream about you become, right? Right.

When I think back on my childhood, it was filled with books, dolls, and cats that became a makeshift classroom with blackboard and chalk. I often played alone, upstairs in the unfinished attic, with my toys and created little future worlds out of nothing much. But the landscape is very real in my memory yet today. I could sense where I was headed, but unsure how to get there. However, in my mind I knew I would arrive if I really wanted it to happen.

There is a children’s story called Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran and illustrated by Barbara Cooney that details a place that children made in Yuma, Arizona. It was said to be “a celebration of the active imagination, of the ability of children to create, even with the most unpromising materials, a world of fantasy so real and multidimensional that it earns a lasting place in memory.” With the help of her mother’s childhood manuscript, Alice McLerran was able to recreate this magical world from the stories the participants told and some written memories. The children constructed the makeshift town from stones, rocks, broken glass, dessert plants and old, discarded junk. But to them it emerged as a play land that endures yet today in the memory of those children who created and inhabited it.

Think about it. Creative Vision is an active force in the development of who we are becoming. Our early years implant desires and outcomes into our subconscious minds and perhaps direct us to our future roles in life. Thinking back we move ahead to make real those play grounds that remain and give us our visions for today. A moment in time can point to our future careers as a predictor of our success and happiness. The only remaining question is, have we walked the path to our heart’s desire or have we abandoned it for other more “secure” choices? Revisit your memories and decide for yourself. If you have made a wrong decision, there is still time to correct your course. Just do what brings you joy and satisfaction, and you will know when you have a strong foothold in where your spirit still wants to take you. As I look back to look to the future, I know that my dream is not finished. I have things yet to do, places to go, and tasks to accomplish since my role as educator is to help others achieve their dreams. My job is not finished until I see you working on your dream in building and inhabiting your own Roxaboxen! May it bring you the joy and happiness that you experienced as a child. Then, you will know that you have fully arrived.

Be Your Very Best Always,
Judy Williamson

The Law of Success

Imagination: The Mirror of YOUR Soul
by Napoleon Hill

What a mighty power is imagination, the workshop of the soul, in which thoughts are woven into railroads and skyscrapers and mills and factories and all manner of material wealth.

I hold it true that thoughts are things;
They’re endowed with bodies and breath and wings;
And that we send them forth to fill
The world with good results or ill.
That which we call our secret thought
Speeds forth to earth’s remotest spot,
Leaving its blessings or its woes,
Like tracks behind it as it goes.
We build our future, thoughts by thought,
For good or ill, yet know it not,
Yet so the universe was wrought.
Thought is another name for fate;
Choose, then, thy destiny and wait,
For love brings love and hate brings hate.
~Ella Wheeler Wilcox

If your imagination is the mirror of your soul, then you have a perfect right to stand before that mirror and see yourself as you wish to be. You have the right to see reflected in that magic mirror the mansion you intend to own, the factory you intend to manage, the bank of which you intend to be president, the station in life you intend to occupy. Your imagination belongs to you! Use it! The more you use it the more efficiently it will serve you.

Think and Grow Rich

The Master Key to Riches

Foundations for Success

The Little Book of Leadership

Outwitting the Devil

by Napoleon Hill

Using his legendary ability to get to the root of human potential, Napoleon Hill digs deep to reveal how fear, procrastination, anger, and jealousy prevent us from realizing our personal goals. This long-suppressed parable, once considered too controversial to publish, was written by Hill in 1938 following the publication of his classic bestseller, Think and Grow Rich. Annotated and edited for a contemporary audience by Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Three Feet from Gold co-author Sharon Lechter, this book–now available in paper–is profound, powerful, resonant, and rich with insight.

Your Right to Be Rich

by Napoleon Hill

Dr. Napoleon Hill’s landmark book Think and Grow Rich does not restrict the concept of riches to such narrow parameters as fortune and fame. You have the right to be rich, and you deserve to be rich in every way—personally and spiritually—as well as financially. This seemingly simple idea spawned a philosophy about wealth and success that has permeated every generation since its inception.

Believe and Achieve

by W. Clement Stone

As Executive Director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, I receive many requests from people wanting the original 1937 copy of Think and Grow Rich. To satisfy those of you who desire to have a 1937 unedited copy, we have reproduced Napoleon Hill’s personal copy of the first edition, printed in March of 1937. The book has the notation, “not to be loaned,” and signed: Annie Lou Hill (the wife of Dr. Hill). This personal copy of Dr. Hill’s was given to me by Dr. Charles W. Johnson, Chairman of the Napoleon Hill Foundation and a nephew of Napoleon Hill. It was Napoleon Hill who sent Dr. Johnson to medical school, and today he is a practicing cardiologist. Charlie refers to Napoleon Hill as “Uncle Nap” and will often makes the statement, “Uncle Nap would be proud of the Foundation today.” The original 1937 manuscript was written and edited with the assistance of Napoleon’s wife. In later years, the existing document was again edited by Dr. Hill. For example, the Foundation owns a 1958 edition that Hill edited personally. This did not lessen the book’s value in Hill’s judgment. Hill made the editing remarks in his own handwriting and the resulting 1960 edited edition has sold over 100 million copies making it the most read self-help book of all time
