“Achievement is a result of controlling the mind. Practice insures control at all times. Even when the situation seems disastrous, there is the possibility of a positive attitude.”

My best friends and associates are avid readers. The most successful people I know are avid readers. Numerous tests have shown that reading in high school is linked to success in college.

One of the many advantages of reading is that it stimulates the mind which slows the process of mental diseases or prevents them as we age.

Reading improves your verbal and writing skills and makes one more equipped to comprehend written material. Reading also improves your vocabulary and helps you to become a more creative thinker.

While books can be a delightful source of entertainment, they are also a storehouse of knowledge. We have access to the knowledge of others that are no longer living or are still living and are relating their acquired knowledge to others by way of the printed page.

In my own personal life, I can relate many stories of how reading good books has benefited me, and in turn, assisted many others because of my reading habits.

I have been asked in person and through numerous interviews how I became CEO of the world famous, non-profit, the Napoleon Hill Foundation. While serving as a bank president for nearly twenty years, I continuously read Napoleon Hill’s books and after speaking to a local historical society, I wrote a letter to the Napoleon Hill Foundation Board of Trustees. I received a reply from the Board of Trustees, inviting me to attend one of their meetings. As a result of this meeting, I was asked to be a board member.

When Mike Ritt retired, I was asked to direct the affairs of the Napoleon Hill Foundation. At the time, we had sold the bank so it was an easy choice. I have not been unemployed in my career of over fifty-seven years.

The most rewarding aspect of this job has been to work with Judith Williamson, director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center, and Chino and Alan, who have been a pleasure to work with for seventeen years.

Also, in my office, I have been deeply rewarded to have Annedia Sturgill as my assistant along with Brooke, who will soon be a doctor, Tosha who is a pharmacist, and Zane, who has been a pleasure to work with for seven years. He began his working career at age fourteen with us and will soon be working full time.

Through the assistance of the employees, seminars have been taught and books have been published all over the world where Napoleon Hill’s material is taught in countries such as Sri Lanka, China, India, Cambodia, Canada, Brazil, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. The Foundation has provided millions of dollars for scholarships, seminars, and education in prisons just to name a few things we have been able to do.

Around the world with Napoleon Hill clearly shows the advantages of reading and applying what you learn.

I wish you the best at whatever you do!

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

“A man may dwell so long upon a thought that it may take him prisoner.” ~Marquis of Halifax

Dear Readers:

Do most of us really apply accurate thinking? I had a experience with learning a lesson with that principle this past weekend. Traveling to Virginia for a wedding, we stopped at my home in KY for overnights there and back. Then the rains came. On Friday morning there was water in my basement and enough coming in so that I had to empty my second China cabinet and move furniture. The source was the rain and the water was accumulating steadily at the bottom of the basement steps. Next, it flowed into the basement area. I went downstairs and inspected both drains – one indoors and one outdoors. They appeared to be in order, but the water was accumulating. Finally, I decided that a plumber was needed, but as a last attempt I wanted to check the amount of backup underneath the lid and thought maybe once removed I could force something down and get the water moving. I pulled off the cap, and guess what? It was not a drain, but a plug! I suspected then that the same type was used on the outside one, and it was. Once released, the water flowed freely! Problem resolved. But the resolution took almost exactly two years from the time that I purchased the home. At least 10 people examined the water accumulation problem — all with college degrees – and did not determine the cause! Everyone assumed that what looked like a drain, was in fact a drain. In reality it was a plug. Remember the saying about “don’t assume” because it makes an a__ out of you and me. Lesson learned.

I guess we all need to look beyond the obvious in all things. What we see on the surface may just be a cover-up for what is really underneath. Superficially, we may judge things and others by how they look at first and even second glance. However, this can be deceiving and what we think we see is nothing even close to reality. When eyes are opened and the problem is uncovered we then can rejoice because what was truly lost is found. There is freedom in knowing that persistence pays off and problems that seem insoluble are really just buried a little deeper from our eyesight. Whether hidden or just beneath the surface, the solution is always there. In training ourselves to look beyond a problem that perhaps may require professional intervention, we learn that the solution can and does lie within up.

So, problems are put in our lives to help us grow and advance. By admitting defeat, we never advance. Accurate thinking is one means to personal development that is often overlooked. Thinking requires work and mental work is thought put into action. What problems are you facing today? Perhaps you can use a little accurate thinking and let these problems flow freely down the drain! It’s worth looking into. Saved me the cost of a plumber! Wonder what it can save you?

Be Your Very Best Always!
Hugs, Judy Williamson

The Law of Success

Financial Success Is Dangerous
by Napoleon Hill

Financial success brings power, and power is a dangerous thing to those who have not learned how to use it justly and wisely!

Great financial power has a decided tendency to develop intolerance and disregard for the rights of others.

When you begin to succeed financially, you will need to watch your step more closely than ever before.

Financial success too often smothers the finer impulses of the human heart, and leads a person to the worship of the god of Mammon.

It is the exception and the rule when a man who accumulates great financial power without having tasted liberally of the dregs of poverty, uses that power wisely.

Real success cannot be measured in dollars! It is something which can be measured only the quantity and quality of service which one renders for the good of others.

If financial power takes away the desire to render useful service, then it may be properly interpreted as failure instead of success.

We do not know for sure, but we strongly suspect that the only real success is that which brings happiness to oneself and to others. We also suspect that the only sure means of attaining happiness is through some sort of useful service which helps others to find happiness. Financial power doesn’t always do this.

Watch your step as you begin to accumulate more money than you need for your daily use. Take care that it does not blind your eyes to the one sure pathway to real success, which is the performance of useful service for the good of humanity.

FOCUS ON: John Westley Clayton
How To Be in Control of Your Life
Using Accurate Thinking

You may be asking yourself, “What exactly is Accurate Thinking?” When I was studying Napoleon Hill’s Science of Success and got to the 10th principle, that’s exactly what I was thinking. Sounds easy, but what is it? What does it have to do with me-or you? How does this apply to our lives? What does it mean? Well, here’s how Napoleon Hill described Accurate Thinking; “Accurate thought involves two fundamentals. First, you must separate facts from mere information. Second, you must separate facts into two classes-the important and the unimportant. Only by doing so can you think clearly and accurately. Accurate thinkers permit no one to do their thinking for them. Gather information and listen to the opinions of others, but reserve for yourself the privilege of making decisions. Truth will be truth, regardless of a closed mind, ignorance, or the refusal to believe.” Wow, that sounds easy. Fact vs Fiction; Important vs Unimportant.

Have you ever had someone tell you something that was totally their opinion with no facts to back it up and then it turns out that the facts were contrary to what they said? Here’s an example: February 5, 2017. Some of you know exactly what that is, ESPECIALLY if you live in Atlanta. Super Bowl LI. So, I was doing some work on my computer and my buddy text me that the Atlanta Falcons just beat the New England Patriots, 28-3, in the super bowl. What he didn’t tell me is he stopped watching the game at 2:08 left in the 3rd quarter and [X] the Falcon’s blew a 25 point lead to lose 34-28, the largest lead to ever be lost in a super bowl, to the New England Patriots. You see, he was just angry because us folks down here in “The Big Easy” love us some Saints and hate us some Falcons. I get it. So here’s how this relates; FACT: the Patriots overcome the 25-point deficit and won the game 34-28, FICTION: the Falcons did not win the game 28-3. IMPORTANT: HE thought it was very important, the reason he was so upset and spoke without having the facts. UNIMPORTANT: Me on the other hand, wasn’t so upset. Because I’ve pretty much learned how to control my emotions it didn’t matter much to me. Small example, but you get it.

I agree with Dr Hill’s opinion on how important the principle of Accurate Thinking is. He says “It is a principle which is on the “must list” of all who would attain the master-key to riches and gain entrance to the great state of Happy Valley. It is one of the most important subjects known to mankind; yet, paradoxically, it is one of the least understood.” I believe that one must live the life that they choose to live and not one that is chosen by others. It all starts with having control over your own mind. With out accurate thinking you allow others opinions to affect your thinking and could change the trajectory of your life, and not usually the way you want it to.

So how can using or not using accurate thinking affect your every day life? I’ll tell you a story of how not applying accurate thinking affected my life….. I grew up in an abusive home as a little boy. My dad never had anything good to say, nor was he very encouraging. He always spoke negatively. He always told me how bad I was, that I would never turn out to be anything. I allowed his thinking to influence my thinking (He was doing my thinking for me, even though he may not have been with me). When challenging situations arose, I allowed doubt to sink in; therefore I gave up. Deep inside of me, I always believed I could do anything. So when this doubtful thinking set in it became a good reason to give up. I had a “reason”. Now though, I think that’s just BS. That’s no “reason”, that’s an “excuse”. Big difference.

Here’s how it affected me: Later in life I choose to pursue a career in real estate. If you know anything about the real estate business, you know that it takes quite a while to really get started and making money. Well, just as soon as I got my license, I learned that lesson the hard way. Because I grew up poor and didn’t learn about money yet, I had no money and things were hard right away. I could hear his voice in the back of my head, “You can’t make it. You can’t do it. You’re not good enough. Give up and get a real job”. Guess what I did? Yep, I quit and got a “real job”. Listening to his opinions, not backed by facts has changed the trajectory of my life forever. I know, we shouldn’t have the “should a, could a, would a” attitude; but what would my life have become if I would have not listen to his opinions in my head? I allowed HIM to think and make MY decision for ME about MY life. Not good.

So how can you use accurate thinking to be in control of your life? Here are some of Dr Hill’s points to ponder about the principle of Accurate Thinking: 1. Thoughts have power, are under your control, and can be used wisely or unwisely. 2. Accurate thinking is a moral duty. 3. Nothing great can happen without accurate thinking. 4. Accurate thinkers accept no political, religious, or other type of thought, regardless of it’s source, until it is carefully analyzed. (Do your homework). 5. Accurate thinkers are the masters of their own emotions. (This is very important. You never want to make decisions based off of emotions). 6. Accurate thinking calls for the highest order of self-discipline. 7. Accurate thinking involves two fundamentals. First, you must separate facts from information. Second, you must separate facts into two classes, the important and the unimportant. 8. It takes concentration to control your attention and focus it on a problem until you have solved it. 9. Turn on the full power of your mind, and control your life. 10. Your power of thought is the only thing which you have complete control. To use this power effectively, you must think accurately. 11. Accurate thinkers allow no one to do their thinking for them. 12. Accurate thinkers know that emotions are not always reliable. Using these 12 points will allow you to be an accurate thinker and be in full control of your life.

The Path to Personal Power

by Napoleon Hill

This true lost manuscript from the “grandfather of self-help,” Napoleon Hill provides timeless wisdom on how to attain a more successful and wealthy life using simple principles.

Napoleon Hill first wrote The Path to Personal Power in 1941, intending it as a handbook for people lifting themselves out of the Great Depression. But upon the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America’s entrance into World War II, these lessons were put aside and largely forgotten–until today.

Discovered in the archives of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, this never-before-published work is made up of three easily digested lessons, each its own chapter: Definiteness of Purpose; the Master Mind; and Going the Extra Mile.

This concise book is a powerful road map that leads to a single discovery–you already have the power to attain whatever wealth, success, and prosperity you desire in life. All you need to do is walk the path without straying, and the rest will follow.

Using these lessons, you have principles to live by that will help you stay on your own personal path to power, and achieve success that you never thought possible.

Will be released on July 18, 2017 on Amazon.com

In How to Own Your Mind, you receive a one-of-a-kind master class in how to think for success from motivational pioneer and author of Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill. In three compelling chapters, Hill demonstrates how to organize, prioritize, and act on information so that it translates into opportunity.

Knowledge is not power. Only applied knowledge is power. This book teaches you how to use what you know, and how to know what’s worth knowing.

“The name Napoleon Hill is synonymous with practical advice on how to get ahead.”—Mitch Horowitz, CNBC.com

Think and Grow Rich

by Napoleon Hill

As Executive Director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, I receive many requests from people wanting the original 1937 copy of Think and Grow Rich. To satisfy those of you who desire to have a 1937 unedited copy, we have reproduced Napoleon Hill’s personal copy of the first edition, printed in March of 1937. The book has the notation, “not to be loaned,” and signed: Annie Lou Hill (the wife of Dr. Hill). This personal copy of Dr. Hill’s was given to me by Dr. Charles W. Johnson, Chairman of the Napoleon Hill Foundation and a nephew of Napoleon Hill. It was Napoleon Hill who sent Dr. Johnson to medical school, and today he is a practicing cardiologist. Charlie refers to Napoleon Hill as “Uncle Nap” and will often makes the statement, “Uncle Nap would be proud of the Foundation today.” The original 1937 manuscript was written and edited with the assistance of Napoleon’s wife. In later years, the existing document was again edited by Dr. Hill. For example, the Foundation owns a 1958 edition that Hill edited personally. This did not lessen the book’s value in Hill’s judgment. Hill made the editing remarks in his own handwriting and the resulting 1960 edited edition has sold over 100 million copies making it the most read self-help book of all time
