Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Maintaining sound health not only allows us to live a longer life, but also increases our quality of life as well. When Napoleon Hill wrote Law of Success in 1928, he was forty five years old and was only fifty four years old when he wrote Think and Grow Rich in 1937. Then, he did not put as much emphasis on sound health, as he did in his later years. As he grew older, Napoleon Hill realized that maintaining sound health was essential to being truly successful.

In 1945, Hill wrote the Master Key to Riches and wrote about the Twelve Riches of Life. In the first chapter of this book, Hill stated that the Master Key is a marvelous device which those who possess it may unlock doors to the solutions of their problems. He continued to write that this key would open the door to sound health.

In 1960, Napoleon Hill co-authored with W. Clement Stone on Success through a Positive Mental Attitude and devoted a chapter to You Can Enjoy Good Health and Live Longer. Hill and Stone also stressed the importance of maintaining a positive mental attitude, because it affects our health as well.

Hill continued to write about maintaining sound health of both body and mind throughout his life.

I think we might can conclude that the benefit of sound health lies in taking action, and the fact that Mr. Hill lived to the age of 87, shows that he practiced what he wrote about. There is no reason why we cannot follow his advice in staying healthy.

The best to you at whatever you do!

The Law of Success

Maintenance of Sound Health
by Napoleon Hill

Most everyone of us would like to get the greatest vigor and fullest use from that body of ours. We can if we make certain that we fully understand two important ideas. They are the oneness of the Creator’s masterpiece, the human mind-body, and its oneness with all of nature.

If you think you are sick, you are.

We cannot separate the body and the mind, for they are one. Anything that affects the health and vigor of the mind will affect the body. In turn, anything that affects the health of our body will affect the mind. This point is so essential to our understanding of health that we have termed the individual a human mind-body.

We are not only one in the sense of a mind-body, but we are also part of the environment in which we live. We are born into a world of trees and mountains and moonlit skies, peopled with all forms of living things, and subject to the same natural laws that govern all things, even the grain of wheat.

Perhaps we can gain wisdom and insight into the handling of this mind-body of ours by examining the world about us and how it functions, so that we may swim with the river of life, and not exhaust our energies fighting against it.

When we consider the waves of the ocean, the flow of the changing seasons, the wane and ebb of the moon, we find there are rhythms to life. There is even a rhythm in our own life from birth through childhood and adolescence to full maturity, old age, and finally rebirth of a new generation. Light and electro-magnetic impulses of radio waves. The movement of the stars and the planets about our sun are rhythmical in nature. So also is the motion of the tiniest particle. The electrons move in a rhythmical pattern about the proton in the atom.

Nothing about life is static or unchanging. There seems to be a constant wave-like motion to life. It is actually a progression of rhythmical patterns. This is one of the factors in our enjoyment of music. It would seem wise that we strive to bend and sway with the rhythms of life, and not stand fixed and immobile against them. The sandy beach moves and changes with the rhythms of the waves, and stands for eternity. The breakwater is soon destroyed.

Don’t neglect to play and relax regularly.

Review your own life. Do you live a rhythmical life? Are you following work with play; mental effort with physical effort; eating with fasting; seriousness with humor; sex with transmutation of sex into sublime creative effort? Consider for a moment one of the earlier lessons in which you learned that the subconscious mind worked best when the mind was at rest, best when we live a rhythm of work and play. The greatest research loaded with the facts, and the mind is then occupied with other thoughts. That is, the mind is playing. Are you giving your subconscious mind a chance to work by playing?

Thus, this mind-body of ours, to reach great heights of successful living and smooth efficient functioning, must first learn to live a rhythmical life, in harmony with the world of living and non-living things about us, and in harmony with natural laws that govern these rhythms of life.

The Price of Your Health
by Jim Stovall

We often overlook issues of health, family, spirituality, and well-being when we establish our priorities. All things being equal, more money is better than less money, but if you’re sacrificing your health or quality time with your loved ones for money, it is likely a poor bargain; we must, therefore, budget the things that are finite such as our time and money while prioritizing the elements of life that are infinite such as spirituality, well-being, and significance.

A veteran airline pilot once told me that on a four-hour, coast-to-coast flight, we would be off-course at least three-andone- half hours of the entire trip. Our lives are much the same way in that success involves a constant adjustment and precise management of all elements. We live in a high-definition movie environment, not a single-frame snapshot photo. The right priorities and percentages for me would likely be improper for you, and even if you have perfect balance today, it probably won’t fit for you next week, next month, or next year.

Wisdom comes not only from making good decisions but in deciding how to decide. As you go through your day today, realize you can’t have it all, so get what matters most to you.

Today’s the day!

Maintenance of Sound Health
by Mani Maran

Our mind and body are one and the same and cannot be separated. Dr. Napoleon Hill calls it as human mind-body. Health of our mind affects that of our body and vice versa. Human beings are the only thinking creatures on this earth. In order to achieve anything, you need to conceive the idea and believe you can achieve the idea.

The purpose of eating food is to supply your body with what it needs to maintain itself. You should eat a well balanced diet consisting of: 1) large portions of fresh fruits and vegetables 2) good serving of protein of all kinds 3) modest amount of carbohydrate and 4) simple dairy products. Never eat while you are worried, frightened or angry. Your body won’t be in a position to make use of the food in that mindset. You could make eating as a habitual response to stress that can lead to overweight.

Your body needs time to rebuild and revitalize itself for the next day. You need six to eight hours of sleep. Do not work until you go to sleep. Instead, wind down at the end of the day by doing something you enjoy that doesn’t over-stimulate you. Developing a habit that signals your body when it is time to sleep is a valuable aid.

Relaxing and playing are important to your mind. Exercise can be a tremendous mental and physical stimulant, and helps you stay clear off sluggishness. It also teaches you persistence and concentration. You need to engage in aerobic exercise for a period of twenty minutes, at least three times a week to keep your heart and lungs strong. The rate at which you exercise must be determined by your age and physical condition.

A negative mind results in physical illness, and most physical ailments begin with wrong thinking. To maintain a positive mental attitude and develop a healthy mind and body, you must conquer fear and anxiety. Anything that affects your physical health also affects your mental health. Keep your mind positive by listening to motivational programs first thing in the morning. Write your goals and the things that you want in life on an index card and read the card many times during the day. Positive affirmations will help as well. Believe in yourself and believe in your ability to achieve your goals and aims. Exercise your mind and body to maintain your sound physical health.

To conclude, your mind and body are one and at one with nature. A positive mental attitude is the most important quality for sound mental and physical health.

The Little Book of Leadership

The Path to Personal Power

by Napoleon Hill

This true lost manuscript from the “grandfather of self-help,” Napoleon Hill provides timeless wisdom on how to attain a more successful and wealthy life using simple principles.

Napoleon Hill first wrote The Path to Personal Power in 1941, intending it as a handbook for people lifting themselves out of the Great Depression. But upon the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America’s entrance into World War II, these lessons were put aside and largely forgotten–until today.

Discovered in the archives of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, this never-before-published work is made up of three easily digested lessons, each its own chapter: Definiteness of Purpose; the Master Mind; and Going the Extra Mile.

This concise book is a powerful road map that leads to a single discovery–you already have the power to attain whatever wealth, success, and prosperity you desire in life. All you need to do is walk the path without straying, and the rest will follow.

Using these lessons, you have principles to live by that will help you stay on your own personal path to power, and achieve success that you never thought possible.

Will be released on July 18, 2017 on Amazon.com

How to Own Your Own Mind

In How to Own Your Mind, you receive a one-of-a-kind master class in how to think for success from motivational pioneer and author of Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill. In three compelling chapters, Hill demonstrates how to organize, prioritize, and act on information so that it translates into opportunity.

Knowledge is not power. Only applied knowledge is power. This book teaches you how to use what you know, and how to know what’s worth knowing.

“The name Napoleon Hill is synonymous with practical advice on how to get ahead.”—Mitch Horowitz, CNBC.com

Think and Grow Rich

by Napoleon Hill

As Executive Director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, I receive many requests from people wanting the original 1937 copy of Think and Grow Rich. To satisfy those of you who desire to have a 1937 unedited copy, we have reproduced Napoleon Hill’s personal copy of the first edition, printed in March of 1937. The book has the notation, “not to be loaned,” and signed: Annie Lou Hill (the wife of Dr. Hill). This personal copy of Dr. Hill’s was given to me by Dr. Charles W. Johnson, Chairman of the Napoleon Hill Foundation and a nephew of Napoleon Hill. It was Napoleon Hill who sent Dr. Johnson to medical school, and today he is a practicing cardiologist. Charlie refers to Napoleon Hill as “Uncle Nap” and will often makes the statement, “Uncle Nap would be proud of the Foundation today.” The original 1937 manuscript was written and edited with the assistance of Napoleon’s wife. In later years, the existing document was again edited by Dr. Hill. For example, the Foundation owns a 1958 edition that Hill edited personally. This did not lessen the book’s value in Hill’s judgment. Hill made the editing remarks in his own handwriting and the resulting 1960 edited edition has sold over 100 million copies making it the most read self-help book of all time
