Pay it Forward

The old Greek proverb explains to me what paying it forward means: “A society grows great when old men plant trees they know whose shade they shall never sit in.”

Paying it forward simply means taking the time and effort to make a positive influence in someone’s life when you have been the recipient of a good deed.

While it seems that the term pay it forward is relatively new and is used by perhaps millions of people, history tells us the pay it forward movement started in 317 B.C. as a part of a play in ancient Athens.

Think of paying it forward as when someone does a good deed for you but instead of repaying the giver you simply do a good deed for someone else or simply pay it forward.

There are literally millions of good deeds that we can do for others and not just in money. The simple act of giving a book to someone or assisting at a rest home for people who are sick, are examples.

Napoleon Hill believed in the Golden Rule Philosophy so much so that he named his magazine, which began to be published 1919, Napoleon Hills Golden Rule Magazine. All of his writings included the Golden Rule Philosophy which stated: do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Think about it- when you pay it forward you are doing a kind deed and in reality practicing the Golden Rule. You are paying it forward as you would want others to do unto you. If more of us practiced Paying It Forward we will be amazed how others pay it forward and put it into their lives on a regular basis.

I have never regretted paying it forward and am simply doing what others have done for me.

The Benefits of Doing More
Than You Are Paid For

The Law of Increasing Returns

The quantity and quality of the extra service you render will come back to you greatly multiplied. Consider the farmer who plants a crop of wheat. If he harvested only one grain of wheat for each grain he planted, he’d be wasting his time. Instead every successful grain produces a stalk and a sheaf containing many more grains. Of course, a few don’t sprout, but whatever problems a farmer may face, getting back many times more wheat grains than he or she planted isn’t one of them.

And so it is with everything you do in the service you render. If you render service worth a hundred dollars, chances are you will get back not only that one hundred dollars but perhaps ten times that–provided you have done so with the right mental attitude. If you render extra service unwillingly or resentfully, you will probably get nothing back. It’s as if the farmer had sown his wheat on the interstate road instead of the fertile field. And if you render your service only with a sharp eye out for your own benefit, you will get nothing except perhaps a poke in that eye.

One rainy afternoon an elderly lady walked into a Philadelphia department store. Most of the clerks ignored her, but one solicitous young man asked if he could help her. When she replied that she was just waiting for the rain to end, he didn’t try to sell her something she didn’t want, and he didn’t turn his back. Instead he brought her a chair.

When the rain let up, the lady thanked the young man and asked for his card. A few months passed, and the owner of the store received a letter asking that this young man be sent to Scotland to take orders for furnishing an entire castle! The letter writer was the elderly lady for whom the clerk had provided a chair. She also happened to be Andrew Carnegie’s mother.

By the time the young clerk had his bags packed for Scotland, he was a partner in that department store. This was the result of the Law of Increasing Returns, all because he had shown a little concern and courtesy when no one else would.

Paying it Forward

One of the interesting results of writing approximately 40 books and having seven of them thus far turned into movies is the fact that every few months when one of the new offerings is released, I get to do a lot of TV, print, and radio interviews.

Recently, I did my second interview with Rick Young who hosts a live program in New York City called What’s in Your Hand on 90.3 FM. If you’re in the New York area, I highly recommend you check it out. Rick’s show focuses on success, possibilities, and making our lives everything they should be. I was scheduled to do only a 20-minute interview to discuss my new book being released, but it went so well, and Rick kept asking me to stay on, so we ended up doing an hour-and-a-half.

At the end of the program on live radio broadcast throughout New York City, Rick asked if I would do him a favor. I took a deep breath and a leap of faith as I simply replied that I would, not knowing what he might ask me to do. Rick told me that sometime during that very day, he wanted me to do a random act of kindness for someone who didn’t expect it and for which I would receive nothing in return. After the program, I thought about it, and it wasn’t long before someone visited my office, and I gave them an autographed copy of one of my novels. My guest thanked me, and I told them that if there was any thanks due, it wasn’t to me, but it instead, was to a radio host in New York. My guest thought that was really amazing, and as they left my office with the book I had given them, they promised to do their own random act of kindness for someone else.

I realized that we’re all planting seeds every day. Not only in our own lives, but in the lives of people around us. These seeds don’t add. They multiply. So if you do something for someone else and they pass it on, by the end of the day, the random act of kindness that you have paid forward could touch the lives of thousands of people. When we do things for others not expecting to benefit, we inevitably receive a mental and spiritual benefit, but often we also receive an unexpected benefit.

I am very grateful that I have become among the highest paid convention speakers in the country. As my own way of maintaining balance and giving back to society, I try to do one speech for free for each speech where I am paid. Last year, I had the privilege of speaking at a wonderful corporate event in Maui, Hawaii, for which I was exceedingly well paid. After the event, I asked the president of that organization how they had learned about me and why they had hired me. The president let me know that he had never heard of me and was unaware of my work, but his 10-year-old granddaughter told him about when I came to her fifth-grade class to talk to the kids. So while I was trying to give some of my time and energy to some kids in a classroom, I was planting the seed that would result in thousands of dollars and a wonderful professional opportunity.

Success comes when we plant seeds and don’t worry about how or when we will get paid.

As you go through your day today, pay it forward, and you will make a difference for others as well as yourself.

Going the Extra Mile-
The Classic Success Principle

In this article, I am attempting to co-relate the Classic Success Principle of Going the Extra Mile with three strong paradigms or contexts:
i) Age old wisdom from India
ii) Nature’s depiction of power of Going the extra mile
iii) Dr. Napoleon Hill’s Life and Success Story.

Definition: Render more and better service that that for which you are paid, and sooner or later you will receive compound interest upon compound interest on your investment.

It is a state of mind that you must develop, so that it is a part of everything you do. There is a subtle but powerful, mental attitude connected with it.

i) Going the Extra Mile – As Explained in the Bhagvad Geeta

Bhagvad Geeta is considered one of the most holy books not only in India, but also the entire world. The Bhagavad-Gita is the eternal message of spiritual wisdom from ancient India. The word Gita means ‘Song’ and the word Bhagavad means ‘God’, often the Bhagavad-Gita is called the ‘Song of God’. It is very interesting to know how the Principle of Going the Extra Mile is depicted in this Book.

In this book, Lord Krishna told Arjuna to “Do your duty without thinking about the outcome”. This line in itself is perhaps the best explanation of Going the Extra Mile. Lord Krishna asked Arjuna to do what’s necessary, right, and religiously correct. You cannot be sure about the outcome and therefore must not think about the consequences, when doing something virtuous. You may or may not attain the objective at last, but thinking again-again about the possible outcome will add to confusion, make you weak, distracted, and increase chances for defeat.

In this book, Lord Krishna told Arjuna to “Do your duty without thinking about the outcome“. This line in itself is perhaps the best explanation of Going the Extra Mile. Perhaps, Napoleon Hill understood the wisdom of this ancient scripture while drafting this Principle of ‘Going the Extra Mile’ as one of the prerequisites of Success.

ii) Nature’s explanation of Going the Extra Mile and its benefits.

Everybody knows that at 99°C, water is hot. Very hot. And we also know that at 100°C, water begins to boil. And becomes steam. And steam is more powerful enough to move a trainload of people. Think about it, just one degree more, and hot water becomes powerful enough to move a locomotive.

One degree means a lot. That little extra effort can mean the difference between being a winner and an also-ran. The difference between achieving your goals and missing them. That is the power you have when you go the Extra Mile. Successful people do all that is expected of them and then, they do a little bit more.

iii) 20 years of hardship and Testing the Principle of Going the extra Mile:

The Principle of Going the extra Mile was tested and proven successful by Dr. Napoleon Hill when he decided to work for the richest man on planet earth for no compensation for twenty long years. Friends and Relatives called him a fool and told him to get his head examined at the beginning. But Dr. Napoleon Hill continued his research due to his deep-seated conviction and was therefore able to coin arguably the world’s best philosophy of personal achievement.

For all the budding entrepreneurs, start-ups and business organizations, I would like to summarize the essence of Going the extra Mile Principle in this final concluding statement:

‘If You Consistently follow Going the Extra Mile Principle with the Right Mental Attitude, this one Principle is sufficient enough to Eliminate, Terminate and Wipe Out your Entire Competition and you will undoubtedly achieve the Grand Success by Truly Starting to Think & Grow Rich’

Think and Grow Rich

As Executive Director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, I receive many requests from people wanting the original 1937 copy of Think and Grow Rich. To satisfy those of you who desire to have a 1937 unedited copy, we have reproduced Napoleon Hill’s personal copy of the first edition, printed in March of 1937. The book has the notation, “not to be loaned,” and signed: Annie Lou Hill (the wife of Dr. Hill). This personal copy of Dr. Hill’s was given to me by Dr. Charles W. Johnson, Chairman of the Napoleon Hill Foundation and a nephew of Napoleon Hill. It was Napoleon Hill who sent Dr. Johnson to medical school, and today he is a practicing cardiologist. Charlie refers to Napoleon Hill as “Uncle Nap” and will often makes the statement, “Uncle Nap would be proud of the Foundation today.” The original 1937 manuscript was written and edited with the assistance of Napoleon’s wife. In later years, the existing document was again edited by Dr. Hill. For example, the Foundation owns a 1958 edition that Hill edited personally. This did not lessen the book’s value in Hill’s judgment. Hill made the editing remarks in his own handwriting and the resulting 1960 edited edition has sold over 100 million copies making it the most read self-help book of all time
