Dear Readers,
Several years ago, we published a book by Cavett Robert, called Success with People that contained the quote, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” Now, Success with People has been republished by my good friends at Sound Wisdom and is available for purchase on Amazon.
Cavett Robert graduated from Ole Miss and later earned a law degree from Washington and Lee University. Cavett had a successful career as a lawyer and in insurance sales, but he is remembered for his public speaking. In 1973, Mr. Robert founded the National Speakers Association, and today, the Association awards the best public speaker with the prestigious Cavett Award.
During our life, most of us probably read or hear quotes that seem like they were written for us personally. That is the way I felt when I read, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” As a result, I decided to have this quote printed on cards and I placed these in prominent places to remind me, that if I don’t like something about my life, I can change it.
Often times, we read or hear something that does not resonate with us immediately. However, after being exposed to many different things later in life, the true meaning behind the words will come to us. The same is true for me. While I was in high school, one of my favorite teachers was Mr. Gilliam, who taught English and history. He was a World War II Veteran, and would often tell us war stories, which fascinated me. He would often read poetry to us, but I was not interested in poetry at the time. Many years later, I can recall Mr. Gilliam saying, “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for.” Later in life, I understood that he was telling us to constantly stretch our efforts to become the best that we can be.

USING YOUR HIDDEN ASSETS

Each of us has locked within us all that is necessary to achieve wealth and greatness. It’s merely a matter of learning to use these hidden assets, of investing them so to speak, so we can cash in on them.
The tragic thing is that so many go through life without ever putting them to use. Sometimes, trouble and adversity is necessary to make people use their resourcefulness and brain power to achieve success.
A bookkeeper lost his job as Christmas was approaching. He had no money to buy his 10-year-old son a gift. Instead of merely despairing, he went to work making the boy a gift.
Using two wheels from a discarded baby carriage, a few pieces of lumber from the basement, and some bright red paint, he constructed a toy that captured the attention of the entire neighborhood.
Other children wanted similar toys. The demand grew so fast that the unemployed bookkeeper turned his basement into a factory, then moved his production to a real industrial plant.
The toy the bookkeeper designed was called the “scooter.”
Or consider the case of a soldier returned from World War I. He had been a salesman before the war but was now unemployed. He used his hidden assets too. He took a chunk of ice cream, stuck a stick in it for a handle, dipped it in chocolate covering—and the Eskimo Pie was born!
Then there was a young man working as a filling station helper in Dallas. The work was hard, hours long, pay short—all adding up to a state of mind I call “constructive discontentment.”
The young man began selling for a publisher of children’s books. But instead of approaching parents, he made friends with school teachers and got their permission to tell the children in class about his books.
Then he would ask the children to arrange an appointment with their parents so he could sell them the books. The plan worked wonderfully and the last time I saw the young man he was preparing to go into the publishing business for himself.
Have you searched carefully for any “hidden” resources you’ve overlooked simply because they weren’t in some form you could bank immediately?
Have you some plan or idea which might prove of great value if you brought it into the open and put it to use?
A very successful man once gave this splendid formula for gaining wealth.
“Get some useful item that will bring repeat sales,” said he. “Then put everything you have into taking it to the millions of people who need it.”
His name was F. W. Woolworth. He didn’t create anything new. He merely took something old and gave it a new method of sales and distribution.
The opportunities our country offers today are greater than ever—and growing constantly. Think, for example, of the millions to be made by someone who devises some simple method of reducing traffic accidents.
Somewhere you have unused assets. Put them to work for you and make yourself financially independent.

The Gift of Dreams

Dreams are the stuff that make up our lives. We are either in the fortunate group of people who are living out our dreams, or we are those restless, wondering individuals who are living the proverbial lives of quiet desperation.
I am not talking about daydreams or fantasies. We all have those fleeting glimpses of ourselves playing center field for the New York Yankees or the Arizona Diamondbacks, as the case may be, in the final game of the World Series. I am, instead, talking about dreams as a future visualization of how our lives could be or should be.
As young people, we all had those things we wanted to be or do or have. They were the dreams of our youth—the visualizations of our destiny. By the time we are an adult, functioning member of society, most of us have diminished our dreams or forgotten about them entirely.
Young people formulate their dreams as the choices among all the possibilities in the world. As we get older, we narrow our dreaming capacity to those things that we currently have the ability or the wherewithal to achieve. It is important to realize that the biggest dreams we ever had in our lives are still alive and well, and within the realm of possibility.
I always take the week between Christmas and the New Year to reconnect with my dreams and goals. Often, throughout the year, it is hard to get away from the day-to-day rush and really think about the things that are important. We are so busy making a living we forget to create a life. The life we’re living right now is not a practice game. This is the Super Bowl and the World Series and the Olympics all rolled up into one. If you do not feel that kind of power and passion each day of your life, this would be a good time to dust off those old dreams and find your unique and fulfilling place in this world.
The Gift of Dreams is just one of the twelve life gifts in my book and movie The Ultimate Gift. I hope you will begin to explore each of the gifts and embrace your life as The Ultimate Gift.
