Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Judith Williamson was Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center and served in this position for eighteen years. As a great educator, Judy encouraged her students to have an open mind and learn new concepts they would not ordinarily consider. Judy was a prolific writer for this e-zine from its inception. She was a wonderful person to work with. One of the things I discovered about Judy was that she is a true lover of all things Irish. I think that she travels to Ireland more than I go to the movies!

On St. Patrick’s Day, Judy sent me some pictures of the Patricks in her family and it reminded me of a book that I read by Brian Buffini. The book, Emigrant Edge, talks about Brian’s journey as an immigrant from Ireland. Brian Buffini was born in Dublin, Ireland and immigrated to the United States when he was nineteen years old. He only had ninety-two dollars to his name. Today, he is one of the nation’s top business experts and the founder of Buffini and Company. I also found it very interesting that Brian was heavily influenced by Think and Grow Rich. He even included chapters in his book that are based on the success principles discussed in Think and Grow Rich. Like Judy, Brian also encourages his readers to have “…a voracious openness to learn.”

The Irish influence on American culture is remarkable, and I urge you to purchase this great book from Brian Buffini. After you read this, you may understand why Brian, Judy, and I are proud of the Irish heritage.

I wish you the best,
Don Green

The Law of Success

Keep Your Mind Free
by Napoleon Hill

An open mind is a free mind.

The person who closes his mind to new ideas, concepts and people is locking a door that enslaves his own mentality. Intolerance is a two-edged scythe that on its backswing cuts off opportunities and lines of communication. When you open your mind, you give your imagination freedom to act for you.

It’s hard to realize now that less than six decades ago there were men who laughed at the Wright Brothers’ experiments at flight. And barely three decades ago, Lindbergh could scarcely find backers for his trans-Atlantic flight. Today, men of vision freely predict man will soon fly to the moon–but no one’s laughing. It’s the scoffers who are held in scorn.

A closed mind is a sign of a static personality. It lets progress pass it by and hence can never take advantage of the opportunities progress offers.

Only if you have an open mind can you grasp the full impact of the first rule of the science of success: “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.”

It would be well for you to take stock of yourself. Are you among those who say “I can” and “It will be done” or do you fall in the group that says “Nobody can”–at the very moment somebody else is accomplishing it? An open mind requires faith–in yourself, your fellow man and the Creator who laid out a pattern of progress for Man and his universe.

The days of superstition are gone. But the shadow of prejudice is as dark as ever. You can come out into the light by closely examining your own personality. Do you make decisions based on reason and logic rather than on emotion and preconceived ideas? Do you listen closely, attentively and thoughtfully to the other fellow’s arguments? Do you seek for facts rather than hearsay and rumor?

The human mentality withers unless in constant contact with the stimulating influence of fresh thought. The Communists, in their brain-washing technique, know that the quickest way to break a man’s will is to isolate his mind, cutting him off from books, newspapers, radio and other normal channels of intellectual communication.

Under such circumstances, the intellect dies for lack of nourishment. Only the strongest will and the purest faith can save it.

Is it possible that you have imprisoned your mind in a social and cultural concentration camp? Have you subjected yourself to a brainwashing of your own making, isolating you from ideas that could lead to success? If so, it’s time to sweep aside the bars of prejudice that imprison your intellect.

Open your mind and set it free!

Don’t Miss the Message
by Jim Stovall

Too many of us get caught up in the counterproductive practice of getting hung up in details while missing the big picture.

I remember as a small child hearing the story of Jonah and the whale. This story has a number of significant principles that can impact our lives today. Recently, I was listening to one of the all-night radio talk shows. I heard a group of scholars and a number of callers from around the country debating issues regarding Jonah and the whale. Questions ranged from “Was it really a whale or a big fish?” to how Jonah could stay alive for three days underwater even while inside a whale, a fish, or whatever it may have been.

As the conversation and debate droned on, I realized that these people were hung up on the details and were missing the big picture. They were debating fine points that can never be fully confirmed or denied while missing the pertinent message that can apply to everyone. A messenger doesn’t have to be perfect in order for us to receive a powerful message.

Gandhi said, “Every man is my superior in that I can
learn something from him.”

Immediately after the Watergate incident, Richard Nixon became a much-maligned public figure. Everything he said and did was scrutinized and discounted because of the well-documented details of the Watergate case. Later in life, Nixon redeemed himself, to a certain extent, and became a well-respected author, lecturer, and elder statesman. People came to recognize that while Nixon had made mistakes, as we all do, he probably possessed the greatest mind relating to international affairs of anyone of his generation. For many years after the Watergate incident everyone totally disregarded what Nixon had to say because he became a flawed messenger.

Gandhi said, “Every man is my superior in that I can learn something from him.” This is true and, furthermore, every experience, situation, book, conversation, etc., can teach us something.

All the details do not have to be fully defined or fully understood for us to receive value. The messenger may be unknown or totally flawed, but the message may have validity. Therefore, we must, in every situation, ask ourselves, regardless of the details, circumstances, or the messenger, “What can I learn from this, and how does this apply to me?”

Today, vow to seek wisdom and knowledge from every source, not just the ones that you fully understand or the ones that meet some arbitrary standard of society.

Today’s the day!

The Path to Personal Power

by Napoleon Hill

This true lost manuscript from the “grandfather of self-help,” Napoleon Hill provides timeless wisdom on how to attain a more successful and wealthy life using simple principles.

Napoleon Hill first wrote The Path to Personal Power in 1941, intending it as a handbook for people lifting themselves out of the Great Depression. But upon the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America’s entrance into World War II, these lessons were put aside and largely forgotten–until today.

Discovered in the archives of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, this never-before-published work is made up of three easily digested lessons, each its own chapter: Definiteness of Purpose; the Master Mind; and Going the Extra Mile.

This concise book is a powerful road map that leads to a single discovery–you already have the power to attain whatever wealth, success, and prosperity you desire in life. All you need to do is walk the path without straying, and the rest will follow.

Using these lessons, you have principles to live by that will help you stay on your own personal path to power, and achieve success that you never thought possible.
