Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

When Napoleon Hill lectured or wrote, he emphasized being successful and living a successful life. While Dr. Hill developed seventeen principles from interviewing hundreds of successful people, pleasing personality may be one of the most important principles in your success journey.

Napoleon Hill often defined a pleasing personality as a well-rounded personality that was centered on a positive mental attitude. For those of you who don’t know, a positive mental attitude simply means that you stay optimistic in spite of temporary defeat and adversity. It influences your tone of voice, your posture, facial expressions, and determines the nature of the emotions you feel. In contrast, a negative attitude dampens your enthusiasm, prevents you from working properly with others, and throws your reasoning out of gear.

Additionally, Napoleon Hill wrote about many qualities of an attractive personality, which are listed below. However, keep in mind that without positivity and optimism, none of these qualities will matter:

• Positive Mental Attitude
• Flexibility
• Sincerity of Purpose
• Promptness of Decision
• Courtesy
• Tact
• Tone of Voice
• The Habit of Smiling
• Facial Expression
• Tolerance
• Frankness of Manner and Speech
• A Keen Sense of Humor
• Faith in Infinite Intelligence
• A Keen Sense of Justice

All aspects of an attractive personality rely upon and augment one another. Some – like a good handshake can be learned quickly while others require habitual effort on your part.

Everybody can and should work on improving their personality.

I wish you the best,
Don Green

The Law of Success

Pleasing Personality
by Napoleon Hill

It is the personalities back of a business which determines the measure of success the business will enjoy. Modify those personalities so they are more pleasing and more attractive to the patrons of the business and the business will thrive. In any of the great cities of the United States one may purchase merchandise of similar nature and price in scores of stores, yet you will find there is always one outstanding store which does more business than any of the others, and the reason for this is that back of that store is a man, or men, who has attended to the personalities of those who come in contact with the public. People buy personalities as much as merchandise, and it is a question if they are not influenced more by the personalities with which they come in contact than they are by the merchandise.

Life insurance has been reduced to such a scientific basis that the cost of insurance does not vary to any great extent, regardless of the company from which one purchases it, yet out of the hundreds of life insurance companies doing business less than a dozen companies do the bulk of the business of the United States.

Why? Personalities! Ninety-nine people out of every hundred who purchase life insurance policies do not know what is in their policies and, what seems more startling, do not seem to care. What they really purchase is the pleasing personality of some man or woman who knows the value of cultivating such a personality.

Your business in life, or at least the most important part of it, is to achieve success. Success, within the meaning of that term as covered by this course on the Fifteen Laws of Success, is “the attainment of your Definite Chief Aim without violating the rights of other people.” Regardless of what your major aim in life may be, you will attain it with much less difficulty after you learn how to cultivate a pleasing personality and after you have learned the delicate art of allying yourself with others in a given undertaking without friction or envy.

One of the greatest problems of life, if not, in fact, the greatest, is that of learning the art of harmonious negotiation with others. This course was created for the purpose of teaching people how to negotiate their way through life with harmony and poise, free from the destructive effects of disagreement and friction which bring millions of people to misery, want and failure every year.

With this statement of the purpose of the course you should be able to approach the lessons with the feeling that a complete transformation is about to take place in your personality.

You cannot enjoy outstanding success in life without power, and you can never enjoy power without sufficient personality to influence other people to cooperate with you in a spirit of harmony. This course shows you step by step how to develop such a personality.

PLEASING PERSONALITY is the “fulcrum” on which you must place the “crowbar” of your efforts, and when so placed, with intelligence, it will enable you to remove mountains of obstacles. This one lesson, alone, has made scores of Master Salesmen. It has developed leaders overnight. It will teach you how to transform your personality so that you may adapt yourself to any environment, or to any other personality, in such a manner that you may easily dominate.

Transformation
by Jim Stovall

Transformation is more about the questions you are willing to ask yourself than the answers you think you already know.

We live in a material world in which people seek instant gratification. They want to measure themselves based on what they have instead of who they are or what they do. What we have is a poor indicator of ourselves. The best indicator of success is simply who we are. This indicator is made up of the elements of our character, our personality, and our principles. The measure of who we are will lead to the second indicator, which is what we do. In this arena, we are judged by our efficiency, our productivity, and the contribution we make to the world. Only after we determine who we are and what we do can we impact what we have; but in our instant gratification world, people who are not willing to change any elements of their personality or their performance simply want to have the rewards.

This is why there are many more lottery tickets sold than personal development books. Ironically, even when people defy the odds and win the lottery if they haven’t altered who they are or what they do, they will inevitably lose what they have.

If you have land that grows trees that produces fruit, the long-term value cannot be determined solely by the fruit or even the trees. The land is the core value. If you are a person of principle and character who performs efficiently and productively, you will have the rewards that everyone seeks; and even if you lost your rewards, you would still be able to reproduce the results just as if one year’s crop of fruit is ruined, there will be a crop the following year. Or even if the trees are destroyed, they can be replaced or regrown as long as the core value of the land is retained.

If people who want to be instant millionaires would transform their thinking to first become a millionaire personality with a millionaire mindset, then they would perform tasks that generate millions of dollars of value into the marketplace. This would result in them being millionaires many times over. But if you just want the fruit without the land or the trees, any success you enjoy will be short-lived.

Success comes from being, then doing, which results in having. If you simply want to have more things without transforming who you are as a person and what you do as a service to the world, you are doomed to failure.

As you go through your day today, remember to focus on who you are and what you do and then you will have everything you desire.

Today’s the day!!

The Path to Personal Power

by Napoleon Hill

This true lost manuscript from the “grandfather of self-help,” Napoleon Hill provides timeless wisdom on how to attain a more successful and wealthy life using simple principles.

Napoleon Hill first wrote The Path to Personal Power in 1941, intending it as a handbook for people lifting themselves out of the Great Depression. But upon the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America’s entrance into World War II, these lessons were put aside and largely forgotten–until today.

Discovered in the archives of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, this never-before-published work is made up of three easily digested lessons, each its own chapter: Definiteness of Purpose; the Master Mind; and Going the Extra Mile.

This concise book is a powerful road map that leads to a single discovery–you already have the power to attain whatever wealth, success, and prosperity you desire in life. All you need to do is walk the path without straying, and the rest will follow.

Using these lessons, you have principles to live by that will help you stay on your own personal path to power, and achieve success that you never thought possible.
