Bring Riches

The Mental Dynamite Series

In this lost classic, the pioneering motivational coach teaches how to make the crucial leap from faith to action in bringing your dreams to life.

Believe in yourself…Have faith. We often hear these expressions. But faith is not enough. We need Applied Faith. In three hard-hitting chapters, motivational master Napoleon Hill teaches you how to transform belief into action, and faith into real-life plans.

Application. Enthusiasm. Action. These are the three keys required to do more than just “believe in yourself” – but to actually BE the person you want to be.

Wishes Won’t Bring Riches provides you with the missing link necessary to go from visualizing your dreams to living them.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Throughout the course of history, it is apparent that many individuals have achieved great accomplishments. However, it is less apparent that many of these individuals faced adversity just before they achieved success and often did so in spite of seemingly impossible odds.

Andrew Carnegie’s story is full of adversity and temporary defeat. Andrew came to the United States from Scotland, and as a thirteen year old boy, worked for $1.20 per week. He had very little formal education. But through hard work and self-discipline, Mr. Carnegie became one of the richest men in the United States. At the end of his life, he used his wealth to build Carnegie libraries all across the United States and Scotland so that anyone could have access to the great knowledge contained in books.

Milo Jones was a simple farmer, but became confined to a wheelchair and could not work. After countless days of wondering how he would support himself and his family, he decided to create a new sausage product that could be made from pigs on his farm. Eventually, his products became so popular that he took out ads in a national magazine. Mr. Jones quickly became a success, in spite of his own disability.

Additionally, Napoleon Hill’s son was faced with adversity. Blair Hill was born without ears and was deaf. Yet, through faith and hard work, he was able to obtain enough hearing that he could attend a normal school. He did not use sign language, graduated from a major university, and went on to lead a very successful life.

Napoleon Hill shares with us many examples of people who have achieved great success. They are worthy of remembering because they inspire us to move forward with our own success story. He reminds us that adversity is part of our journey and sometimes it is the key to our greatest achievement. The greatest accomplishments in life are often preceded by adversity. The difference between ordinary people and truly extraordinary people is that they see their adversity as a stepping stone and as an opportunity to learn. Too many people simply give up when they are faced with a difficult challenge or obstacle. We can either let temporary defeat stop us, or we can ignite our desire to achieve our dreams.

I wish you the best,

The Law of Success

This is the second of a series of excerpts that focus on the “secret” in Think and Grow Rich. What makes these selections so unique is that a keyword was chosen with an emphasis on the secret that Napoleon Hill so often mentioned. I know you will enjoy reading these powerful excerpts.

DESIRE
by Napoleon Hill

In planning to acquire your share of the riches, let no one influence you to scorn the dreamer. To win the big stakes in this changed world, you must catch the spirit of the great pioneers of the past, whose dreams have given to civilization all that it has of value, the spirit which serves as the life-blood of our own country—your opportunity and mine, to develop and market our talents.

Let us not forget, Columbus dreamed of an Unknown world, staked his life on the existence of such a world, and discovered it!

Copernicus, the great astronomer, dreamed of a multiplicity of worlds, and revealed them! No one denounced him as “impractical” after he had triumphed. Instead, the world worshipped at his shrine, thus proving once more that “SUCCESS REQUIRES NO APOLOGIES, FAILURE PERMITS NO ALIBIS.”

If the thing you wish to do is right, and you believe in it, go ahead and do it! Put your dream across, and never mind what “they” say if you meet with temporary defeat, for “they,” perhaps, do not know that EVERY FAILURE BRINGS WITH IT THE SEED OF AN EQUIVALENT SUCCESS.

Henry Ford, poor and uneducated, dreamed of a horseless carriage, went to work with what tools he possessed, without waiting for opportunity to favor him, and now evidence of his dream belts the entire earth. He has put more wheels into operation than any man who ever lived, because he was not afraid to back his dreams.

Thomas Edison dreamed of a lamp that could be operated by electricity, began where he stood to put his dream into action, and despite more than ten thousand failures, he stood by that dream until he made it a physical reality. Practical dreamers DO NOT QUIT!

Lincoln dreamed of freedom for the black slaves, put his dream into action, and barely missed living to see a united North and South translate his dream into reality.

The Wright brothers dreamed of a machine that would fly through the air. Now one may see evidence all over the world, that they dreamed soundly.

The world has become accustomed to new discoveries. Nay, it has shown a willingness to reward the dreamer who gives the world a new idea.

“The greatest achievement was, at first, and for a time, but a dream.”

“The oak sleeps in the acorn. The bird waits in the egg, and in the highest vision of the soul, a waking angel stirs. DREAMS ARE THE SEEDLINGS OF REALITY.”

Awake, arise, and assert yourself, you dreamers of the world. Your star is now in the ascendency. The world depression brought the opportunity you have been waiting for. It taught people humility, tolerance, and open-mindedness.

The world is filled with an abundance of OPPORTUNITY which the dreamers of the past never knew.

A BURNING DESIRE TO BE, AND TO DO is the starting point from which the dreamer must take off. Dreams are not born of indifference, laziness, or lack of ambition.

The world no longer scoffs at the dreamer, nor calls him impractical. If you think it does, take a trip to Tennessee, and witness what a dreamer President has done in the way of harnessing, and using the great water power of America. A score of years ago, such a dream would have seemed like madness.

You have been disappointed, you have undergone defeat during the depression, you have felt the great heart within you crushed until it bled. Take courage, for these experiences have tempered the spiritual metal of which you are made—they are assets of incomparable value.

Remember, too, that all who succeed in life get off to a bad start, and pass through many heartbreaking struggles before they “arrive.” The turning point in the lives of those who succeed usually comes at the moment of some crisis, through which they are introduced to their “other selves.”

Helen Keller became deaf, dumb, and blind shortly after birth. Despite her greatest misfortune, she has written her name indelibly in the pages of the history of the great. Her entire life has served as evidence that no one ever is defeated until defeat has been accepted as a reality.

Before passing to the next chapter, kindle anew in your mind the fire of hope, faith, courage, and tolerance. If you have these states of mind, and a working knowledge of the principles described, all else that you need will come to you, when you are READY for it. Let Emerson state the thought in these words, “Every proverb, every book, every byword that belongs to thee for aid and comfort shall surely come home through open or winding passages. Every friend whom not thy fantastic will, but the great and tender soul in thee craveth, shall lock thee in his embrace.”

There is a difference between WISHING for a thing and being READY to receive it. No one is ready for a thing until he believes he can acquire it. The state of mind must be BELIEF, not mere hope or wish. Open-mindedness is essential for belief. Closed minds do not inspire faith, courage, and belief.

Remember, no more effort is required to aim high in life, to demand abundance and prosperity, than is required to accept misery and poverty. A great poet has correctly stated this universal truth through these lines:

“I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However, I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.
“For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
“I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.”

My Three Keys to Success
by Lefford Fate

At twenty-one years old while stationed at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, my mother died of a heart attack and my first son was born. As the saying goes, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” I was mentally and emotionally drained. I was devastated but didn’t have time to grieve. I had to go to Georgia and take care of my mom’s funeral but I needed to be in North Dakota for my wife who was eight and a half months pregnant. If not for my supervisor, Sergeant Gunther, I would have lost my career. I was so broken that I couldn’t see a way forward. He told me I was better than how I was behaving, and he wasn’t letting me ruin my career on his watch. He saved me. I didn’t believe in myself, but I did believe in his belief in me. I started modeling his behavior. He was a reader so I started reading. He introduced me to Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich and it changed my life. I studied this book and practiced what I found. I discovered three key principles that halted my downward spiral and lifted me to a thirty-one-year career and to the top of the Air Force enlisted force. What three principles made such a difference? Learning from Adversity and Defeat, Personal Initiative and Going the Extra Mile.

When I lost my mother, I nearly lost myself. I was emotionally charged with anger and depression. TSgt Gunther saw through the pain and asked me a simple question. What would your mother want you to do? My mom would want me to take care of my family (especially her new grandson). She would want me to go on, so I took all that love I had for her (and all the love she had for me), transmuted it and gave it to my son. I found myself loving harder than I had ever loved before. I didn’t get over my mother’s death – I grew through it. I learned that there is a seed of equivalent benefit for every adversity and defeat. It is hard to find this benefit in the midst of a surge of emotions, but…IT IS THERE!

The next principle is Personal Initiative. TSgt Gunther was my model for change. I watched and followed his lead. He was an avid reader, so I read what he read. They say knowledge is power. Through Napoleon Hill, I have learned that knowledge is a good beginning. Applied knowledge with a definite purpose and a burning desire is true power. Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich gives us example after example of what successful people did in order to achieve excellence in their chosen field. Following their lead, I quit waiting to be told what to do and sought what I wanted in life. If I wanted something, I studied the requirements to get it. I surrounded myself with like-minded people and asked for their counsel. All this added greatly to my life.

I found that Going the Extra Mile was a valuable action that took me to the top. This key principle is how I achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Do your job, and then some. Be a good subordinate, and then some. Be a good supervisor, and then some. Be a good father, and then some. The only difference between ordinary and extraordinary is a little something “EXTRA”. Go out and add a little extra in all you do, and you will find yourself in thin air, where the best and brightest dwell. These three key principles ensured my success. Learning from Adversity and Defeat, taking Personal Initiative and Going the Extra Mile. If these three key success principles can carry me to the top of the greatest Air Force in the world, I believe they can also take you to the top of your world.
