“Any business whose management has the foresight to adopt a policy which consolidates management, employees and the public it serves in a spirit of team work, provides itself with an insurance policy against failure.” ~Napoleon Hill
Today we celebrate Napoleon Hill’s birth date. He is well remembered here in Wise and in our state of Virginia. We honor him with the annual proclamation in the state of Virginia. This year our distinguished guest speaker will be Satish Verma from Canada. He will address the Future Business Leaders of America students on Monday, October 29 at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Here is the Governor’s proclamation in honor of Napoleon Hill:
WHEREAS, Napoleon Hill was born on October 26, 1883, in Wise County, Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Napoleon Hill is known throughout the world as one of the earliest writers of the modern genre of personal-success literature, for writing countless quotes and famous speeches, and for helping others lead more productive and satisfying lives; and
WHEREAS, Napoleon Hill’s writings outline a philosophy of success that includes the importance of clear goals, focused determination, persistence, ethical dealings with others, and maintaining a positive attitude; and
WHEREAS, Napoleon Hill has influenced innumerable leaders and citizens working in various fields across our nation and around the world to strive towards their goals and achieve success; and
WHEREAS, Napoleon Hill, a Southwest Virginia native, exemplified Virginia values, such as hard work, commitment, and purposeful living; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is pleased to recognize Napoleon Hill for his philosophy of leadership, self-motivation, and individual achievements;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 26, 2018, as NAPOLEON HILL DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
One of Napoleon Hill’s greater qualities was his ability to make quick but informed decisions.
A decision is simply a conclusion or resolution after consideration of all the known facts. In other words, you take what you know and then form your own opinion about what you should or shouldn’t do.
In order to make correct decisions, it is important to have accurate thinking. Napoleon Hill wrote that accurate thinking was one of the most important, most interesting, and most difficult of all the success principles. It is important and interesting because this principle directs your definite major purpose and helps you focus on only one goal at a time. It is difficult for people to accomplish accurate thinking because our mind tends to wander. We are constantly thinking about different things throughout our day and we have to tame our minds, just like you would a wild horse.
Accurate thinking needs to be developed through an open mind because without this it is impossible to make good decisions. Most of us do not believe that which we do not understand. So, in order to think accurately, we have to keep an open mind in order to gather facts to make the best decision possible.
For thousands of years, ships were made of wood because shipbuilders believed this was necessary for the boat to float. At the time, they did not understand that other materials could be used. Additionally, until 1903, most humans believed that they could not fly. However, the Wright Brothers proved everyone wrong when they made their first flight at Kitty Hawk.
As you can see, it is important to open your mind to endless possibilities in order to develop accurate thinking. Also, two fundamental principles must be developed in order to make good decisions. First, you need to separate facts from fiction. A tremendous amount of what we hear or read is not based on facts. The next step in making good decisions is to classify facts into two categories, important and unimportant.
Making good decisions is an important step on the road to success. Procrastination is the opposite of making a decision, which robs us of opportunity. To be successful, we must avoid this. Ambition should make you want to take action. Time is important and success favors those who make prompt decisions.
I wish you the best,

This is the seventh of a series of excerpts that focus on the “secret” in Think and Grow Rich. What makes these selections so unique is that a keyword was chosen with an emphasis on the secret that Napoleon Hill so often mentioned. I know you will enjoy reading these powerful excerpts.
DECISION The Mastery of Procrastination
The Seventh Step toward Riches
by Napoleon Hill
ACCURATE analysis of over 25,000 men and women who had experienced failure, disclosed the fact that LACK OF DECISION was near the head of the list of the 30 major causes of FAILURE. This is no mere statement of a theory—it is a fact.
PROCRASTINATION, the opposite of DECISION, is a common enemy which practically every man must conquer.
You will have an opportunity to test your capacity to reach quick and definite DECISIONS when you finish reading this book, and are ready to begin putting into ACTION the principles which it describes.
Analysis of several hundred people who had accumulated fortunes well beyond the million dollar mark, disclosed the fact that every one of them had the habit of REACHING DECISIONS PROMPTLY, and of changing these decisions SLOWLY, if, and when they were changed. People who fail to accumulate money, without exception have the habit of reaching decisions, IF AT ALL, very slowly, and of changing these decisions quickly and often.
One of Henry Ford’s most outstanding qualities is his habit of reaching decisions quickly and definitely, and changing them slowly. This quality is so pronounced in Mr. Ford, that it has given him the reputation of being obstinate. It was this quality which prompted Mr. Ford to continue to manufacture his famous Model “T” (the world’s ugliest car), when all of his advisors, and many of the purchasers of the car, were urging him to change it.
Perhaps, Mr. Ford delayed too long in making the change, but the other side of the story is, that Mr. Ford’s firmness of decision yielded a huge fortune, before the change in model became necessary. There is but little doubt that Mr. Ford’s habit of definiteness of decision assumes the proportion of obstinacy, but this quality is preferable to slowness in reaching decisions and quickness in changing them.
The majority of people who fail to accumulate money sufficient for their needs, are, generally easily influenced by the “opinions” of others. They permit the newspapers and the “gossiping” neighbors to do their “thinking” for them. “Opinions” are the cheapest commodities on earth. Everyone has a flock of opinions ready to be wished upon anyone who will accept them. If you are influenced by “opinions” when you reach DECISIONS, you will not succeed in any undertaking, much less in that of transmuting YOUR OWN DESIRE into money.
If you are influenced by the opinions of others, you will have no DESIRE of your own.
Keep your own counsel, when you begin to put into practice the principles described here, by reaching your own decisions and following them. Take no one into your confidence, EXCEPT the members of your “Master Mind” group, and be very sure in your selection of this group, that you choose ONLY those who will be in COMPLETE SYMPATHY AND HARMONY WITH YOUR PURPOSE.
It is a dream come true to celebrate Napoleon Hill’s birthday in the land in which Napoleon Hill was born here in the state of Virginia. I feel that I have become a part of Napoleon Hill’s legacy in that the words that Napoleon Hill wrote have positively influenced my life and brought me here as evidence that this philosophy of success truly works.
I give credit to Don Green, Executive Director who is doing a great job in sharing Napoleon Hill’s legacy and knowledge with the world.
It is hard to describe the feelings of joy that I have. I find it hard to describe them.
But I certainly can describe some essential things.
Forty years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Napoleon Hill through the pages of his great work The Law of Success. It is easy for me to relate the powerful impact it had over me because this philosophy was the main reason for my own life’s transformation.
When I first read Napoleon Hill in a public library, I was only fourteen. I was profoundly impressed with the knowledge in this book.
With great self-discipline, I followed his advice and I was able to go through one of the most difficult periods in my life.
My willingness to acquire the skills quoted by Hill made it possible for me to have an extraordinary life.
Today, Napoleon Hill is in three different continents and forty countries. I am the CEO of a company in Brazil which is growing every year and becoming a worldwide business.
This is the results of this powerful philosophy that I learned about and which taught me strategic planning. These principles changed my way of living and working. They made me realize life can and must be ruled by a greater purpose. It also made me realize we can achieve the very best in our lives if we dedicate ourselves proficiently.
The years of research Napoleon Hill documented went forth from this corner of the state of Virginia and reached the ends of the world. It reached a fourteen-year-old boy in a public library in Brazil. This research changed my life and it has changed the lives of many others. It continues to “make the world a better place in which to live.”
I started teaching this philosophy because I was so impressed by it. To be able to teach it in an effective way, we use a methodology known as “experiential learning” and we’ve been developing other efficient tools which increases Hill’s philosophy absorption; because of this, more people are creating a better life for themselves. This transformative philosophy has spread around the world from this small charming American town.
For me visiting Wise, Virginia is like finding a pure nourishment straight from the source. It is very important to me to find time to celebrate Napoleon Hill and his philosophy of success.
His philosophy went forth from this land and it has returned to this land in the form of myself a citizen from Brazil, just one of the many people this great philosophy has transformed.
As Thomas Edison said in the preface of The Law of Success: “the readers will be enhanced by this work” and just as truthful this philosophy will help many more people become successful for many more generations to come.
It is a great honor to be a MasterMind instructor sharing the philosophy of success. Every instructor in mastermind Brazil affiliated with the Napoleon Hill Foundation is proud to be connected to the great source from which they acquire Hill’s knowledge.
The participants in Brazil know they are part of a noble bloodline, a Royal Dynasty when it comes to the Mastermind philosophy which is the main source of expertise that is located in the pleasant city of Wise. This gives us confidence and strength.
Therefore, I and the thousands of Brazilians who have already tasted this wisdom, wish long life to Napoleon Hill’s legacy. Happy Birthday, Napoleon Hill!
