Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

One of the biggest elements that separate success and failure is the lack of persistence. Too many times, people often give up in the face of adversity of defeat. Most of the time, however, if people will keep going, they will realize they are only a few short steps away from success.

Persistence is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as the quality that allows someone to continue or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people. In Napoleon Hill’s book, Think and Grow Rich, he devoted an entire chapter to persistence. He wrote that persistence was an essential factor in transforming a desire into its monetary equivalent. He also wrote that most people are ready to quit at the first sign of opposition or misfortune. A few carry on despite all opposition until they attain their goal. History is full of successful people who persisted until they reach their goal.

Napoleon Hill gave us the best example of what happens when an individual gives up too soon in his story of R.U. Darby. Mr. Darby was a gold prospector who had hopes of making a fortune in the gold mines. He bought all of the equipment necessary and started mining. At first, Mr. Darby was doing rather well and found a few golden fragments. However, his luck ran out when it appeared that he was wasting his time just digging in the dirt. He continued digging, but couldn’t find any sign of gold. So, he gave up his gold mining venture and sold the equipment to a junk man. The junk man decided that he would try the same mine as R.U. Darby one more time. He started digging and, before you know it, he had struck an immense seam of gold that made him rich. Mr. Darby had stopped digging when he was only three feet away from gold!

I encourage each of you to push through to the finish. We all face adversity and obstacles at times, but don’t give up. You may be only three feet away from gold, just like R.U. Darby was.

I wish you the best,

The Law of Success

This is the eighth of a series of excerpts that focus on the “secret” in Think and Grow Rich. What makes these selections so unique is that a keyword was chosen with an emphasis on the secret that Napoleon Hill so often mentioned. I know you will enjoy reading these powerful excerpts.

The Eighth Step toward Riches

by Napoleon Hill

PERSISTENCE is an essential factor in the procedure of transmuting DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. The basis of persistence is the POWER OF WILL.

Will-power and desire, when properly combined, make an irresistible pair. Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold-blooded, and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is will-power, which they mix with persistence, and place back of their desires to ensure the attainment of their objectives.

I had a fine opportunity, then and there, to kill off ambition before it gained control of me. Later in life, after having analyzed thousands of people, I discovered that MOST IDEAS ARE STILL-BORN, AND NEED THE BREATH OF LIFE INJECTED INTO THEM THROUGH DEFINITE PLANS OF IMMEDIATE ACTION. The time to nurse an idea is at the time of its birth. Every minute it lives gives it a better chance of surviving. The FEAR OF CRITICISM is at the bottom of the destruction of most ideas which never reach the PLANNING and ACTION stage.

Many people believe that material success is the result of favorable “breaks.” There is an element of ground for the belief, but those depending entirely upon luck, are nearly always disappointed because they overlook another important factor which must be present before one can be sure of success. It is the knowledge with which favorable “breaks” can be made to order.

The only “break” anyone can afford to rely upon is a self-made “break.” These come through the application of PERSISTENCE. The starting point is DEFINITENESS OF PURPOSE. Examine the first hundred people you meet, ask them what they want most in life, and ninety-eight of them will not be able to tell you. If you press them for an answer, some will say—SECURITY, many will say—MONEY, a few will say—HAPPINESS, others will say—FAME AND POWER, and still others will say— SOCIAL RECOGNITION, EASE IN LIVING, ABILITY TO SING, DANCE, or WRITE, but none of them will be able to define these terms, or give the slightest indication of a PLAN by which they hope to attain these vaguely expressed wishes. Riches do not respond to wishes. They respond only to definite plans, backed by definite desires, through constant PERSISTENCE.

There are four simple steps which lead to the habit of PERSISTENCE. They call for no great amount of intelligence, no particular amount of education, and but little time or effort. The necessary steps are:

  3. A MIND CLOSED TIGHTLY AGAINST ALL NEGATIVE AND DISCOURAGING INFLUENCES, including negative suggestions of relatives, friends and acquaintances.

These four steps are essential for success in all walks of life. The entire purpose of the thirteen principles of this philosophy is to enable one to take these four steps as a matter of habit.

These are the steps by which one may control one’s economic destiny. They are the steps that lead to freedom and independence of thought. They are the steps that lead to riches, in small or great quantities. They lead the way to power, fame, and worldly recognition.

They are the four steps which guarantee favorable “breaks.” They are the steps that convert dreams into physical realities. They lead, also, to the mastery of FEAR, DISCOURAGEMENT, INDIFFERENCE. There is a magnificent reward of all who learn to take these four steps. It is the privilege of writing one’s own ticket, and of making Life yield whatever price is asked.

Success in life, be it personal or professional, comes from performing at a high level for an extended period of time. Hap Lowry is a friend and colleague on the professional speaking platform. He has a number of powerful statements he calls “Hapisms.” One of my favorites is “Persistence pays high dividends both professionally and personally.”

We all know people who had a great idea and simply quit before the goal line. There are others who, due to an extraordinary performance one time, reached their goal but do not perform at a persistently high level so that their brief success simply fades into the mist of oblivion. They become the actors, authors, singers, business people who, whenever their name is mentioned, someone will ask the eternal question, “Whatever happened to them?” Life comes down to performing at a high level over a long period of time instead of outstanding performances just once or twice.

Success in life, be it personal or professional, comes from performing at a high level for an extended period of time.

Two years ago, I began my own personal exercise and eating revolution. My new lifestyle has resulted in weight loss of over 100 pounds and an improved physical condition that I would have not thought possible for someone who has already celebrated his fortieth birthday. I discovered that persistence and consistency is the key to ongoing success. From time to time, people will come into the fitness facility where I exercise, and they will work out at a superhuman pace for one or two days, and then they go away, never to be heard from again.

I have been reviewing leadership surveys conducted to determine the elements that top performing executives use to evaluate themselves. They ask questions like: “Am I on target for my goals?” “Are the people around me dedicated to our collective success?” And many others. One of the most intriguing questions to come out of the executive surveys is the following: “Is my pace sustainable?” If your pace is not sustainable, you will most likely never see the mountaintop, and if you do, it will only be for a brief moment before you slide back down the mountainside, losing the progress you have made.

Today, as you look at your long-term goals and your short-term tasks, part of making sure you are on target is to know that the things you are doing today will lead you to your ultimate destiny and that today’s performance is repeatable and sustainable. Dedicate yourself to a consistent performance that will be both reliable and dependable. The race does not always go to the swiftest. It goes to the individual who realizes that today is simply one more rung on the ladder toward your goal.

Today’s the day!
