Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

We have a creative mind and are capable of creating results that have not existed before. However, a thought must exist before the mind can work. Remember, in all instances, a thought exists before a thing.

It is worth repeating many times that ideas within the mind are limited only by those limits placed on the mind by the individual.

It is a fact that we can never express anything that we do not first have in our minds. If there is a secret, this is it—all power, all riches, and all success must first be thoughts built into our own minds.

I remember that when I was a young person, several weeks before Christmas, I was not thinking about toys or clothes that I might receive as gifts. I was thinking of ways to make money. I would think of holly, Christmas trees, and mistletoe that could be found in the woods and brought to the highway to sell to people who were traveling at this time of year. The thought of making money was so strong and I pictured it so vividly that its fruition seemed assured, as if it had already happened.

William James, the famous Harvard professor, and psychologist said that the greatest discovery of his generation was the discovery of the power of the subconscious mind. It’s my belief that this was not only the greatest discovery of his generation but the greatest discovery of all time. What this means is that once this fact was known, people realized that they had within themselves the ability to control their surroundings. People are thereby separated from animals in that they are not at the mercy of luck or chance. With this discovery, people can engineer their own destiny.

I wish you the best,

The Law of Success

This is the thirteenth of a series of excerpts that focus on the “secret” in Think and Grow Rich. What makes these selections so unique is that a keyword was chosen with an emphasis on the secret that Napoleon Hill so often mentioned. I know you will enjoy reading these powerful excerpts.

THE SIXTH SENSE
THE DOOR TO THE TEMPLE OF WISDOM

The Thirteenth Step toward Riches
by Napoleon Hill

THE “thirteenth” principle is known as the SIXTH SENSE, through which Infinite Intelligence may, and will communicate voluntarily, without any effort from, or demands by, the individual.
.

This principle is the apex of the philosophy. It can be assimilated, understood, and applied ONLY by first mastering the other twelve principles.

The SIXTH SENSE is that portion of the subconscious mind which has been referred to as the Creative Imagination. It has also been referred to as the “receiving set” through which ideas, plans, and thoughts flash into the mind. The “flashes” are some-times called “hunches” or “inspirations.”

The sixth sense defies description! It cannot be described to a person who has not mastered the other principles of this philosophy, because such a person has no knowledge, and no experience with which the sixth sense may be compared. Understanding of the sixth sense comes only by meditation through mind development from within. The sixth sense probably is the medium of contact between the finite mind of man and Infinite Intelligence, and for this reason, it is a mixture of both the mental and the spiritual. It is believed to be the point at which the mind of man contacts the Universal Mind.

After you have mastered the principles described in this book, you will be prepared to accept as truth a statement which may, otherwise, be incredible to you, namely:

Through the aid of the sixth sense, you will be warned of impending dangers in time to avoid them, and notified of opportunities in time to embrace them.

There comes to your aid, and to do your bidding, with the development of the sixth sense, a “guardian angel” who will open to you at all times the door to the Temple of Wisdom.
.

Whether or not this is a statement of truth, you will never know, except by following the instructions described in the pages of this book, or some similar method of procedure.

The author is not a believer in, nor an advocate of “miracles,” for the reason that he has enough knowledge of Nature to understand that Nature never deviates from her established laws. Some of her laws are so incomprehensible that they produce what appears to be “miracles.” The sixth sense comes as near to being a miracle as anything I have ever experienced, and it appears so, only because I do not understand the method by which this principle is operated.

This much the author does know—that there is a power, or a First Cause, or an Intelligence, which permeates every atom of matter, and embraces every unit of energy perceptible to man—that this Infinite Intelligence converts acorns into oak trees, causes water to flow down-hill in response to the law of gravity, follows night with day, and winter with summer, each maintaining its proper place and relationship to the other. This Intelligence may, through the principles of this philosophy, be induced to aid in transmuting DESIRES into concrete, or material form. The author has this knowledge, because he has experimented with it—and has EXPE-RIENCED IT.

Step by step, through the preceding chapters, you have been led to this, the last principle. If you have mastered each of the preceding principles, you are now prepared to accept, without being skeptical, the stupendous claims made here. If you have not mastered the other principles, you must do so before you may determine, definitely, whether or not the claims made in this chapter are fact or fiction.

While I was passing through the age of “hero-worship” I found myself trying to imitate those whom I most admired. Moreover, I discovered that the element of FAITH, with which I endeavored to imitate my idols, gave me great capacity to do so quite successfully.

I have never entirely divested myself of this habit of hero-worship, although I have passed the age commonly given over to such. My experience has taught me that the next best thing to being truly great, is to emulate the great, by feeling and action, as nearly as possible.

Tools and Talent
by Jim Stovall

Here in the 21st century it is easy to take the marvels of the computer age for granted. Things that seem commonplace to us now would have been science fiction a decade ago and complete fantasy a generation ago.

Many of us have deep-seated dreams and aspirations to create our masterpiece as a legacy of our life and time here on earth. It’s normal to want to leave something of ourselves behind so that when we are gone we will not be forgotten. When we think of the masters such as Mozart, Shakespeare, Mark Twain, or Ernest Hemingway, we often look at their work and forget the tools with which they created their enduring masterpieces. The most basic Smart Phone or iPad would have been an unimaginable quantum leap to any of these geniuses.

As I dictate the words that are being typed into a computer for this column, it is easy to forget that the ability to edit with ease, check spelling and punctuation, or instantly translate into dozens of languages is a recent phenomenon. If Shakespeare had only had the most basic word processing software, or Beethoven had had the benefit of simple editing and mixing technology that is available on your hand-held device, one shudders to think how much more output would have been generated from their life’s work. Maybe they would have grown complacent with the technology as we too often do, but I tend to think the masters would have harnessed the potential of these modern-day miracles.

The critical component in creating your masterpiece remains the unparalleled computerized graphic generator that is housed between your ears. The best programs and technology we have today to enhance our creativity are little more than a blank slate until we accept the task of filling in the blanks. Mozart still had to play and write the first note, and Shakespeare still had to imagine the first scene of one of his plays and the first line from the first character. The barriers to creativity and moats around our masterpieces are still our own lack of willingness to engage in the task.

One of my favorite 20th century authors, James Michener, was fond of saying, “The average aspiring writer is filled with seven volumes of garbage that they are, unfortunately, not willing to write through to get to the treasure beneath.” As in most things in life, greatness begins when you begin.

My late, great friend and mentor Dr. Robert Schuller often said, “Starting is halfway there.” Most people don’t fail to achieve. They fail to begin.

As you go through your day today, honor the masters and begin your masterpiece.

Today’s the day!

In Truthful Living, Gitomer has captured Hill’s foundational wisdom for the twenty-first century. These easy-to-implement real-world strategies for life, family, business, and the bottom line prove as energizing and inspiring today as they were nearly one hundred years ago.
