Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Napoleon Hill often wrote about the importance of ENTHUSIASM, but he also wrote about having controlled enthusiasm. He said, “Controlled enthusiasm steps up the vibrations of thought and alerts the imagination.” The higher form of enthusiasm is controlled enthusiasm. We should control our enthusiasm and emotions so that we can direct our energy to the attainment of our definite major purpose. If we want to be truly successful in life, we can’t let our enthusiasm run wild and uncontrolled without a purpose.

Enthusiasm is like gas in a vehicle’s engine – it is the fuel that moves the vehicle. But it is up to us to move it in a controlled and correct direction. If a person combines enthusiasm, along with accurate thinking and other success principles, he or she can change adversity, failure, and temporary defeat into success.

There are many benefits of controlled enthusiasm such as an increased imagination, attractive personality, and personal initiative. Enthusiasm also stimulates the subconscious mind, in much the same way as having a positive mental attitude does.

Uncontrolled enthusiasm can cloud your judgment and misdirect you. On the other hand, controlled enthusiasm will allow you to focus on what is most important. Use your time, passion and talent on your definite major purpose and not on every shiny little thing that comes along.

I wish you the best,
Don Green

The Law of Success

ANDREW CARNEGIE’S ANALYSIS
OF ENTHUSIASM

by Napoleon Hill

When asked which of the two types of enthusiasm he regarded as the more beneficial, Andrew Carnegie replied: “That depends upon the circumstances. Passive enthusiasm always precedes the expression of active enthusiasm, as one must feel enthusiasm before he can express it in any form.

“And there are times when the active expression of enthusiasm may be detrimental to one’s interests, as it may indicate over-eagerness or anxiety, or disclose one’s state of mind when he does not wish it to be known to other.

“It is highly important that one learns to withhold the expression of his feelings whenever he wills to do so. It is also important to learn to turn on enthusiasm and give it any desired form of expression at will. In both instances the control is the important factor.

Enthusiasm inspires personal initiative, both in thought and physical action. It is very difficult for one to do his best in any kind of endeavor for which he does not feel and display enthusiasm.

“It dispels physical fatigue and overcomes laziness. It stimulates the nervous system and causes it to perform its duties more effectively, including particularly the digestion of food. For this reason the meal hour should be the most pleasant hour of the day. It should never be made the occasion for settling personal or family differences of opinion; nor should it become the time for the correction of the faults of children.

Positive enthusiasm discourages all forms of negative thought and dispels fear and worry. Thus it prepares the mind for the expression of faith, which is the most powerful of all forms of enthusiasm. It is important that one learns the difference between negative and positive enthusiasm, since enthusiasm is the starter which puts the subconscious mind to work.

Enthusiasm is the twin brother of the will and is the major source of persistent, sustained action of the will. Willpower, persistence, and enthusiasm are triplets which give one sustained action with a minimum loss of physical energy.

Emerson spoke no greater truth than when he said: ‘Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.’

From Buffett to Buffett
by Jim Stovall

At first glance, there would seem to be no more opposite people than Warren Buffett and Jimmy Buffett. For years, there has been speculation about how they might be related. It would appear that any family tie would have to be many generations into the past.

Warren Buffett seems to be the button-down, number-crunching, Wall Street wizard while Jimmy Buffett seems to be the happy-go-lucky, barefoot, beach-party-forever guy. In reality, Warren Buffett creates money while having fun, and Jimmy Buffett creates fun while making money. We can learn from both of these gentlemen.

Warren Buffett has accumulated unprecedented wealth by generating amazing investment returns over many decades. While he is respected for his wisdom and insight, he is admired for his down-home lifestyle in Omaha where he enjoys the fruits of the companies he owns such as Coca-Cola, Dairy Queen, and others. Stockholders’ meetings generally hold all of the entertainment value of watching paint dry or grass grow, but Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway stockholders’ meetings have been described as the Woodstock for capitalists. Warren Buffet’s stockholders’ meetings involve singing, dancing, and serenades with Warren himself playing the ukulele.

Many people think Jimmy Buffett retired decades ago after his big hit Margaritaville. Nothing could be further from the truth as he tours constantly each summer selling out stadiums across the country and, literally, around the world. Jimmy Buffett has a group of fanatical followers known as “Parrot Heads.”

Parrot Heads party with vigor but also have a conscience. There are Parrot Head chapters across the country that have sprung up somewhat independent from Jimmy Buffett while following the messages in his music. These Parrot Head chapters have raised millions of dollars for local charities and international environmental causes. When you look at Jimmy Buffett’s business empire including restaurants, clubs, casinos, concerts, recording, and much more, you see the connection between fun and finance that is the hallmark of both Jimmy Buffett and Warren Buffett.

The late, great entertainer George Burns, who performed right up until his death at almost 100 years of age, often said, “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.” I believe both Buffetts have found a way to do this. They have found a way to both work hard and play hard all at the same time.

As you go through your day today, pursue profit and passion in the same place.

Today’s the day!!
