Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Have you ever believed that you can never be a millionaire because people who become rich have talents or other characteristics that people like you who are “average” don’t have?

Success is truly a mind game, as my good friend Joe Dudley, Jr. realized. The circumstances of his early life would have given him plenty of excuses to fail.

In his book Walking by Faith, Joe lets the reader know that not only was he born into poverty in a large family, but he had a speech impediment and was labeled retarded. Also, being black was not exactly an asset when he was a child.

Dudley told 500 students at the annual Napoleon Hill Day held at the University of Virginia-Wise that his mother had explained to him that he might be slow, but that when he got something, he got it.

Did Joe ever get it? Today he owns the largest minority beauty cosmetic company in the United States. He is very wealthy, and he has given millions to worthy causes such as scholarships.

Once you have a purpose in your mind and you have a passion for it—or, as Napoleon Hill said, you have a “burning desire” to accomplish it—you are well on your way.

Once you have read, studied, and learned to believe the principles of success, you will have at your disposal the tools you need to overcome problems and to achieve personal growth that will enable you to take the success journey.

It is a person’s aim or purpose that makes her. Without aim, she is like tumbleweed in that it is the wind that determines where she goes. Let one obstacle get in her way, and if she has no aim or purpose, she will alter her path. She focuses on her weakness, misery, and failure—in other words: “My life is aimless.”

A well-ascertained and generous purpose gives vigor, direction, and perseverance to all of a person’s life.

The qualities associated with a strong purpose are a well-disciplined intellect, character, influence, tranquility, and cheerfulness within—and those are what lead to success. Whatever a person’s talents and advantages may be, if he has no aim or a low one, he will be weak and despicable; if he has a high purpose, he cannot be other than respectable and influential. Without some definite object before us, some standard that we are earnestly striving to reach, we cannot expect to attain any great height, either mentally or morally. But setting high standards for ourselves and wishing to reach them without any further effort on our part is not enough to elevate us to any great degree.

It has been said, “Nature holds for each of us all that we need to make us useful and happy; but she requires us to labor and wait for all we get.” We are given nothing of value that does not include the need for labor; and we can expect to overcome difficulties only by strong and noble work. In our striving for “something better than we have known,” we should work for others’ good rather than for our own plea-sure. Those whose object in life is their own happiness find at last that their lives are sad failures.

We each need to do something each day that moves us worthily in the direction of our definite plan of action. More than just dreaming is necessary if we are to succeed in the objects and ambitions of our life. We achieve our best results in every department of life only when we thoughtfully plan and earnestly work in the proper directions.

In the following article by Napoleon Hill you will see how having and Definite Major Purpose exponentially increases your Self-Confidence. Then Jim Stovall will share with you the good news of having accomplished one of the major goals of his life.

I wish you the best,
Don Green

The Law of Success

Self Confidence
by Napoleon Hill

This is the third in a series of excerpts from Napoleon Hill’s Law of Success.

You learned in Lesson Two that any idea you firmly fix in your subconscious mind, by repeated affirmation, automatically becomes a plan or blueprint which an unseen power uses in directing your efforts toward the attainment of the objective named in the plan.

You have also learned that the principle through which you may fix any idea you choose in your mind is called Auto-suggestion, which simply means a suggestion that you give to your own mind. It was this principle of Auto-suggestion that Emerson had in mind when he wrote:

“Nothing can bring you peace but yourself!”

You might well remember that nothing can bring you success but yourself. Of course, you will need the co-operation of others if you aim to attain success of a far-reaching nature, but you will never get that cooperation unless you vitalize your mind with the positive attitude of Self-confidence.

Perhaps you have wondered why a few men advance to highly paid positions while others all around them, who have as much training and who seemingly perform as much work, do not get ahead. Select any two people of these two types that you choose, and study them, and the reason why one advances and the other stands still will be quite obvious to you. You will find that the one who advances believes in himself. You will find that he backs this belief with such dynamic, aggressive action that he lets others know that he believes in himself. You will also notice that this Self-confidence is contagious; it is impelling; it is persuasive; it attracts others.

You will also find that the one who does not advance shows clearly, by the look on his face, by the posture of his body, by the lack of briskness in his step, by the uncertainty with which he speaks, that he lacks Self-confidence. No one is going to pay much attention to the person who has no confidence in himself.

He does not attract others because his mind is a negative force that repels rather than attracts.

In no other field of endeavor does Self-confidence or the lack of it play such an important part as in the field of salesmanship, and you do not need to be a character analyst to determine, the moment you meet him, whether a salesman possesses this quality of Self-confidence. If he has it the signs of its influence are written all over him. He inspires you with confidence in him and in the goods he is selling the moment he speaks.

We come, now, to the point at which you are ready to take hold of the principle of Auto-suggestion and make direct use of it in developing yourself into a positive and dynamic and self-reliant person. You are instructed to copy the following formula, sign it and commit it to memory:

SELF-CONFIDENCE FORMULA

First: I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my definite purpose, therefore I demand of myself persistent, aggressive and continuous action toward its attainment.

Second: I realize that the dominating thoughts of my mind eventually reproduce themselves in outward, bodily action, and gradually transform themselves into physical reality, therefore I will concentrate my mind for thirty minutes daily upon the task of thinking of the person I intend to be, by creating a mental picture of this person and then transforming that picture into reality through practical service.

Third: I know that through the principle of Auto-suggestion, any desire that I persistently hold in my mind will eventually seek expression through some practical means of realizing it, therefore I shall devote ten minutes daily to demanding of myself the development of the factors named in the sixteen lessons of this Reading Course on the Law of Success.

Fourth: I have clearly mapped out and written down a description of my definite purpose in life, for the coming five years. I have set a price on my services for each of these five years; a price that I intend to earn and receive, through strict application of the principle of efficient, satisfactory service which I will render in advance.

Fifth: I fully realize that no wealth or position can long endure unless built upon truth and justice, therefore I will engage in no transaction which does not benefit all whom it affects. 1 will succeed by attracting to me the forces I wish to use, and the co-operation of other people. I will induce others to serve me because I will first serve them. I will eliminate hatred, envy, jealousy, selfishness, and cynicism by developing a love for all humanity, because I know that a negative attitude toward others can never bring me success. I will cause others to believe in me because I will believe in them and in myself.

I will sign my name to this formula, commit it to memory and repeat it aloud once a day with full faith that it will gradually influence my entire life so that I will become a successful and happy worker in my chosen field of endeavor.

Signed………………………….

Before you sign your name to this formula make sure that you intend to carry out its instructions. Back of this formula lies a law that no man can explain. The psychologists refer to this law as Auto-suggestion and let it go at that, but you should bear in mind one point about which there is no uncertainty, and that is the fact that whatever this law is it actually works!

Another point to be kept in mind is the fact that just as electricity will turn the wheels of industry and serve mankind in a million other ways, or snuff out life if wrongly applied, so will this principle of Auto-suggestion lead you up the mountain-side of peace and prosperity, or down into the valley of misery and poverty, according to the application you make of it. If you fill your mind with doubt and unbelief in your ability to achieve, then the principle of Auto-suggestion takes this spirit of unbelief and sets it up in your subconscious mind as your dominating thought and slowly but surely draws you into the whirlpool of failure. But, if you fill your mind with radiant Self-confidence, the principle of Auto-suggestion takes this belief and sets it up as your dominating thought and helps you master the obstacles that fall in your way until you reach the mountain-top of success.

Million Dollar Gift
by Jim Stovall

Just recently, I had one of the great privileges in my personal and professional life to reach a goal that has been forty years in the making. As a college sophomore, I was inspired to write down my life goals. They included starting my own company, becoming a millionaire, writing a book, becoming a platform speaker, and making a movie. Each of those goals, I’m thankful to say, has been reached and exceeded, but the only other goal I wrote those many years ago didn’t become a reality until now.

Forty years ago, I set a goal to find a worthwhile cause or purpose and give them a check for one million dollars. It’s important to note that as I wrote that goal down, I was going blind, in debt, and had a grand total of seven dollars in my pocket. For many years, I didn’t have a million dollars to give away, and for the last few years, I’ve been looking for the right cause. Last spring, I was in a two-day advisory board meeting at my alma mater, Oral Roberts University, which is where I originally set my goals. During the meeting, we discussed things the university should be doing in the year 2030. One of the many ideas that were presented was to have a School of Entrepreneurship.

Throughout last summer and into the fall, I couldn’t get away from that idea. So around Thanksgiving, I called the president of the university and asked him to come to our home. We sat for several hours as I described to him my vision for The Stovall Center for Entrepreneurship which involves a four-year degree as well as a Master’s degree in entrepreneurship along with launch pads, an incubator, and an accelerator of entrepreneurial ventures, and a museum of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial training will be available online and supported around the world.

The president of the university presented my idea to the university trustees, the dean, and the professors within the business school. They added their ideas to mine, and it began to take shape. I had to take a deep breath when they informed me that my vision could not become a reality for a million dollar donation. It would take a 1.5 million dollar commitment on my part. Entrepreneurship has given me everything I ever imagined and more. I decided it was worth 1.5 million dollars to give young people around the world and aspiring entrepreneurs the opportunity to make their dreams come true and see their goals realized.

I have long believed and said, “The most fun you will ever have with money is giving it away.” I believe it more now than ever before.

As you go through your day today, set goals for what you want to be, have, do, and give away.

In Truthful Living, Gitomer has captured Hill’s foundational wisdom for the twenty-first century. These easy-to-implement real-world strategies for life, family, business, and the bottom line prove as energizing and inspiring today as they were nearly one hundred years ago.

The Law of Success

by Napoleon Hill

This edition of Law of Success contains 4 volumes, the other three volumes are available on Amazon.com too.

In response to popular demand, and with great pride, the Napoleon Hill Foundation and its Board of Trustees present this edition of Dr. Hill’s classic course, The Law of Success. To preserve the integrity of Napoleon Hill’s ideas, the text of his first published work is largely unmodified. Our changes have been small. Specifically, The Law of Success was originally released in eight volumes: beginning with the third edition, the eight volumes were combined into one facsimile volume. Consequently, you will notice that the page numbers start over every second lesson. Additionally, a few pages where the type had become illegible have been reset for easier reading.

The universal message of The Law of Success remains unaltered, however. Because of changes in customs and word use, the language may sometimes appear dated, but the underlying principles are as valid today as they were when Hill first presented them in his dynamic and forceful style. In particular, his use of the masculine gender should be taken to connote “mankind” or “humankind” rather than men alone. No one would have been prouder or more excited by the advances of the women’s movement than Dr. Hill, who advocated equal rights and equal opportunity for all people long before it was fashionable.

The Success Philosophy that Napoleon Hill presents in this course and in his other works has withstood the test of time. His principles of success have changed the lives of countless women and men from all walks of life on every continent. They can change your life, too, if you will apply them and get into action. This power to change your life is the legacy of Napoleon Hill; that is the standard by which all works of motivational literature and programs are measured.

To attain your goals and know fulfillment in life, study, think, plan, and apply the principles this book has to offer. To merely read and agree with Dr. Hill is to miss the crucial point of his philosophy: Success comes only when you act on what you know and believe.
