Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

It was Einstein who said that imagination was more important than knowledge. With a belief system, you can see images of what can occur in the future. These images will help you to believe in the future, develop plans, and have the persistence to see that those plans become reality.

Events that we are able to bring about happen because the beliefs we develop are so strong that we can hold on to them until our plans and actions can bring them to fruition.

Unless you have strong beliefs in what you want to become and develop those beliefs, it is highly unlikely that you will develop the plans and carry out the action needed to make you a highly successful person.

As we continue to feature Napoleon Hill’s publications in chronological order we come upon The Magic Ladder to Success.

The Ladder to Success was Napoleon Hill’s second book. Originally published in 1930, it was essentially a greatly abridged version of Hill’s national bestseller, The Law of Success. While The Law of Success has been almost constantly in print since its inception, The Ladder has been long out of print, overshadowed by its highly praised predecessor. As such, The Ladder presents an unusual opportunity that the Napoleon Hill Foundation has decided to explore in an effort to make clear just how useful and important Dr. Hill’s philosophy of success has been.

I wish you the best,

The Law of Success

IMAGINATION
by Napoleon Hill

This is the first in a series of excerpts from Napoleon Hill’s Magic Ladder to Success.

In the workshop of the imagination, one may take old, well-known ideas or concepts, or parts of ideas, and combine them with still other old ideas or parts of ideas, and out of this combination create that which seems to be new. This process is the major principle of all invention.

One may have a definite chief aim and a plan for achieving it; may possess self-confidence in abundance; may have a highly developed habit of saving, and both initiative and leadership in abundance, but if the element of imagination is missing, the other qualities will be held useless, because there will be no driving force to shape the use of these qualities. In the workshop of the imagination, all plans are created, and without plans, no achievement is possible except by mere accident.

All ideas are the most profitable products of the human mind, and they are all created in the imagination. The five and ten cent store is the result of imagination. The system was created by F.W. Woolworth, and it happened in this way: Woolworth was working as a salesman in a retail store. The owner of the store complained that he had a considerable amount of old, unsaleable merchandise on hand that was in the way, and was about to throw some of it into the trash box to be consigned to the furnace, when Woolworth’s imagination began to function.

I have an idea, said he, how to make this merchandise sell. Let’s put it all on a table and place a big sign on the table saying that all articles will be sold at ten cents each.

The idea seemed feasible; it was tried, worked satisfactorily, and then began further development which resulted, finally, in the big chain of Woolworth stores which belted the entire country and made the man who used his imagination a multimillionaire.

What is known as “basic” patent is rarely offered for record at the Patent Office, meaning a patent that embraces really new and heretofore undiscovered principles. Most of the hundreds of thousands of patents applied for and granted every year, many of which are of a most useful nature, involves nothing more than a new arrangement or combination of old and well-known principles which have been used many times before in other ways and for other purposes.

When Mr. Saunders created his famous Piggly-Wiggly stores system, he did not even combine two new ideas; he merely took an old idea that he saw in use and gave it a new setting, or in other words put it to a new use, but this required imagination.

To cultivate imagination so it will eventually suggest ideas of its own initiative, you should make it your business to keep a record of all the useful, ingenious and practical ideas you see in use in other lines of work outside your own occupation, as well as in connection with your own work. Start with an ordinary, pocket-size notebook, and catalogue every idea, or concept, or thought that occurs to you which is capable of practical use, and then take these ideas and work them into new plans. By and by the time will come when the powers of your own imagination will go into the storehouse of your subconscious mind, where all the knowledge you have ever gathered is stored, assemble this knowledge into new combinations, and hand over to you the results in the shape of brand new ideas, or what appear to be new ideas….

A single combination of ideas, which may be parts of old and well-known ideas, may be worth anywhere from a few cents to a few millions of dollars. Imagination is the one faculty on which there is no set price or value. It is the most important of the faculties of the mind, for it is here that all of a man=s motives are given the impulse necessary to turn them into action.

The dreamer, who does nothing more than dream, uses imagination, but he falls short of utilizing this great faculty because he does not add to it the impulse to put his thoughts into action. Here is where initiative enters and goes to work for him, providing he is familiar with the Laws of Success and understands that ideas, of themselves, are worthless until put into action.

The dreamer who creates practical ideas must place back of these ideas three of the laws which have preceded this one, on imagination, namely:

1. The Law of A Definite Chief Aim
2. The Law of Self-Confidence
3. The Law of Initiative and Leadership

Without the influence of these three laws no man may put into action his thoughts and ideas, although the power to dream, imagine, and create may be highly developed.

Is it your business to succeed in life? How? That is something you must answer for yourself, but, in the main, you must proceed something after this order:

1. Adopt a definite purpose and create a definite plan for its attainment.
2. Take the initiative and begin putting your plan into action.
3. Back your initiative with belief in yourself and in your ability to successfully complete your plan.

No matter who you are, what you are doing, how much your income is, how little money you have, if you have a sound mind and if you are capable of using your imagination, you can gradually make a place for yourself that will command for you respect and give you all the worldly goods you need. There is no trick connected with this. The procedure is simple, as you may start with a very simple, elementary idea, plan, or purpose, and gradually develop it into something more pretentious.

Your imagination may not be sufficiently developed, at this time, to enable you to create some useful invention, but you can begin exercising this faculty by using it to create ways and means of improving the methods of performing your present work, whatever it may be. Your imagination will grow strong in proportion to the extent that you command it and direct it into use. Look about you and you will find plenty of opportunities to exercise your imagination. Do not wait for someone to show you what to do, but use vision and let your imagination suggest what to do. Do not wait for someone to pay you for using your imagination, because your real pay will come from the fact that every time you use it constructively in creating new combinations of ideas, it will grow stronger, and if you keep up this practice, the time will come, very soon, when your services will be sought eagerly, at any price within reason.

Suspending Disbelief
by Jim Stovall

You might be surprised to learn that, as a blind person, I am a huge fan of Broadway theatre. Whether I am in New York or catch one of the touring companies on the road, I love the experience. I have been to dozens of shows and have gone backstage many times to explore the sets and props. It never ceases to amaze me that a vaguely painted piece of canvas with a few spotlights can turn into the Paris Opera House or colonial Philadelphia or even pioneer day Oklahoma.

In conjunction with my work at the Narrative Television Network, I have had the privilege of interviewing a number of Broadway stars as well as creative people behind the scenes. The success of Broadway theatre, they tell me, depends upon the audience’s willingness to “suspend disbelief.” This means that the audience believes the setting and the circumstances because they want to. As one sits in the darkened theatre, the desire to get caught up in the story makes the experience possible.

We can live out our wildest dreams and greatest imagined successes if we will simply suspend the disbelief that is keeping us anchored to our current mediocrity.

I wonder how this same suspension of disbelief might apply to our personal and professional lives. Suppose, instead of just going through the motions of our daily, mundane tasks, we saw these activities as stepping stones toward making our dreams come true. Further suppose that when we thought about our dreams and goals, we stopped listening to those voices around us saying, “That’s not real” or “That could never work in your life.” If instead, like in the theatre, we were willing to suspend our disbelief and dismiss skepticism, I believe that we would find a whole new world of possibility.

If the simplest of settings and costumes can take us anywhere in this world or even to a new world within the confines of a theatre, why can’t the same principles work in our daily lives? The magic doesn’t end at the footlights. We can live out our wildest dreams and greatest imagined successes if we will simply suspend the disbelief that is keeping us anchored to our current mediocrity.

Assume this is possible. Give it a try, and you will not only enjoy the theatre but enjoy every day of the rest of your life.

Today’s the day!

Napoleon Hill’s Golden Rules

by Napoleon Hill

Napoleon Hill’s Golden Rules: The Lost Writings consists of a series of magazine articles Napoleon Hill wrote between 1919 and1923 for Success Magazine, of which he eventually become an editor. Many of his writings such as the chapter on Law of Attraction, written in the March 1919 issue, have recently basis of several bestselling books. Readers will discover principles that will assure their success if studied and put into action.

The Law of Success

by Napoleon Hill

This edition of Law of Success contains 4 volumes, the other three volumes are available on Amazon.com too.

In response to popular demand, and with great pride, the Napoleon Hill Foundation and its Board of Trustees present this edition of Dr. Hill’s classic course, The Law of Success. To preserve the integrity of Napoleon Hill’s ideas, the text of his first published work is largely unmodified. Our changes have been small. Specifically, The Law of Success was originally released in eight volumes: beginning with the third edition, the eight volumes were combined into one facsimile volume. Consequently, you will notice that the page numbers start over every second lesson. Additionally, a few pages where the type had become illegible have been reset for easier reading.

The universal message of The Law of Success remains unaltered, however. Because of changes in customs and word use, the language may sometimes appear dated, but the underlying principles are as valid today as they were when Hill first presented them in his dynamic and forceful style. In particular, his use of the masculine gender should be taken to connote “mankind” or “humankind” rather than men alone. No one would have been prouder or more excited by the advances of the women’s movement than Dr. Hill, who advocated equal rights and equal opportunity for all people long before it was fashionable.

The Success Philosophy that Napoleon Hill presents in this course and in his other works has withstood the test of time. His principles of success have changed the lives of countless women and men from all walks of life on every continent. They can change your life, too, if you will apply them and get into action. This power to change your life is the legacy of Napoleon Hill; that is the standard by which all works of motivational literature and programs are measured.

To attain your goals and know fulfillment in life, study, think, plan, and apply the principles this book has to offer. To merely read and agree with Dr. Hill is to miss the crucial point of his philosophy: Success comes only when you act on what you know and believe.
