Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Napoleon Hill’s Distance Learning Course begins next week
July 1, 2019.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

Learn about Auto-Suggestion and the Principles of Success that are essential for your personal growth. Sign up for our Distance Learning course today!

The Law of Success

AUTO-SUGGESTION
THE MEDIUM FOR INFLUENCING THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND
The Third Step toward Riches
by Napoleon Hill

This is the fourth in a series of excerpts from Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich.

AUTO-SUGGESTION is a term which applies to all suggestions and all self-administered stimuli which reach one’s mind through the five senses. Stated in another way, auto-suggestion is self-suggestion. It is the agency of communication between that part of the mind where conscious thought takes place, and that which serves as the seat of action for the subconscious mind.

Through the dominating thoughts which one permits to remain in the conscious mind, (whether these thoughts be negative or positive, is immaterial), the principle of auto-suggestion voluntarily reaches the subconscious mind and influences it with these thoughts.

NO THOUGHT, whether it be negative or positive, CAN ENTER THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND WITHOUT THE AID OF THE PRINCIPLE OF AUTOSUGGESTION, with the exception of thoughts picked up from the ether. Stated differently, all sense impressions which are perceived through the five senses, are stopped by the CONSCIOUS thinking mind, and may be either passed on to the subconscious mind, or rejected, at will. The conscious faculty serves, therefore, as an outerguard to the approach of the subconscious.

Nature has so built man that he has ABSOLUTE CONTROL over the material which reaches his subconscious mind, through his five senses, although this is not meant to be constructed as a statement that man always EXERCISES this control. In the great majority of instances, he does NOT exercise it, which explains why so many people go through life in poverty.

Recall what has been said about the subconscious mind resembling a fertile garden spot, in which weeds will grow in abundance, if the seeds of more desirable crops are not sown therein. AUTO-SUGGESTION is the agency of control through which an individual may voluntarily feed his subconscious mind on thoughts of a creative nature, or, by neglect, permit thoughts of a destructive nature to find their way into this rich garden of the mind.

Remember, therefore, when reading aloud the statement of your desire (through which you are endeavoring to develop a “money consciousness”), that the mere reading of the words is of NO CONSEQUENCE—UNLESS you mix emotion, or feeling with your words. If you repeat a million times the famous Emil Coué formula, “Day by day, in every way, I am getting better and better,” without mixing emotion and FAITH with your words, you will experience no desirable results. Your subconscious mind recognizes and acts upon ONLY thoughts which have been well-mixed with emotion or feeling.

This is a fact of such importance as to warrant repetition in practically every chapter, because the lack of understanding of this is the main reason the majority of people who try to apply the principle of auto-suggestion get no desirable results.

Plain, unemotional words do not influence the subconscious mind. You will get no appreciable results until you learn to reach your subconscious mind with thoughts, or spoken words which have been well emotionalized with BELIEF.

Do not become discouraged, if you cannot control and direct your emotions the first time you try to do so. Remember, there is no such possibility as SOMETHING FOR NOTHING. Ability to reach, and influence your subconscious mind has its price, and you MUST PAY THAT PRICE. You cannot cheat, even if you desire to do. The price of ability to influence your subconscious mind is everlasting PERSISTENCE in applying the principles described here. You cannot develop the desired ability for a lower price. You, and YOU ALONE, must decide whether or not the reward for which you are striving (the “money conscious”), is worth the price you must pay for it in effort.

Wisdom and “cleverness” alone, will not attract and retain money except in a few very rare instances, where the law of averages favors the attraction of money through these sources. The method of attracting money described here, does not depend upon the law of averages. Moreover, the method plays no favorites. It will work for one person as effectively as it will for another. Where failure is experienced, it is the individual, not the method, which has failed. If you try and fail, make another effort, and still another, until you succeed.

Here is a most significant fact—the subconscious mind takes any orders given it in a spirit of absolute FAITH, and acts upon those orders, although the orders often have to be presented over and over again, through repetition, before they are interpreted by the subconscious mind. Following the preceding statement, consider the possibility of playing a perfectly legitimate “trick” on your subconscious mind, by making it believe, because you believe it, that you must have the amount of money you are visualizing, that this money is already awaiting your claim, that the subconscious mind MUST hand over to you practical plans for acquiring the money which is yours.

Contentment, Comparison, and Complacency
by Jim Stovall

Much of what we seek as we strive for this thing we call success is actually contentment. Contentment is an elusive and complex state. To be content, we must accept things as they are but not necessarily accept the current condition as a permanent situation. Contentment comes only when we judge ourselves in light of who we know we should be and can be.

There is never any comparison involved in contentment. Contentment cannot be achieved if we compare ourselves to what other people do or what they may have. I find many unhappy people around the world failing in an attempt to reach someone else’s goal. Only you can determine who you are and where you want to be.

While there is no comparison in contentment, there is also no complacency. Being content with where we are does not mean we are satisfied to stay in our current position. If you are taking a road trip from your home to a destination 200 miles away, as you reach the halfway point, you will have traveled 100 miles. You may be very content with your progress thus far as long as you don’t compare it to your destination or become complacent and accept your journey half traveled.

Your academic performance as a fifth grader may have been judged exceptional, and therefore, your teacher gave you an A on your report card. If you compare yourself to students who didn’t perform as well, you might become complacent and stop studying hard and doing the things it took to achieve an A on your report card. If you’re performing as an A-level fifth grader when you arrive in the 10th grade, you will likely receive an F on your report card and fail the course.

We must find a balance between determining who we are and where we are without comparing ourselves with others or becoming complacent and accepting our current status.

Learning is a lifelong process, which is why I believe the graduation ceremony is called a commencement. A commencement means the beginning of a process, not the end.

If you had studied computer science and had become a leading authority in the world ten years ago or even five years ago, you could have achieved many things; but if you compared yourself to less-accomplished people at that time and became complacent, your five-year-old computer skills would be totally obsolete today.

The great mountaineer, Sir Edmund Hillary, had many failed attempts to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He felt each of these expeditions had achieved a certain level of success that he knew would eventually culminate in his reaching the top of the world. He became famous for giving speeches to raise money between his various attempts to climb the mountain.

On each occasion, he would stand in front of a giant mural of Mount Everest, and as he closed his remarks, he would turn and speak directly to the mountain, proclaiming, “I will eventually succeed because you can’t get any bigger, and I can.”

As you go through your day today, be content with where you are without comparing yourself to others or becoming complacent about the future.

Today’s the day!
