Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Factors that determine success are offering a service or a product that is desired in the market.

Note that I did not say a service or product that people need. Ray Kroc made millions by selling hamburgers; this was not necessarily a product that people needed, but it was something they wanted. The degree to which you do something better than others and receive just rewards for your service or product will determine your success.

Qualities such as persistence, working hard, and having integrity are all important if you are to succeed. Yet all of these will not assure your success.

The first step to success begins in our thought process. When Napoleon Hill put the three words “Thoughts are things” at the beginning of the all-time bestseller Think and Grow Rich! in 1937, he was stating an essential fact of the success process that he had discovered during his twenty years of research.

Thoughts truly are things, but it is important that the thought process concentrates on a purpose that will supply a human want and at the same time be something for which you have a deep passion. The reason passion is important is that even when you have a wonderful idea, if you do not have passion, you are likely to quit when the going gets tough. Passion will make you want to persist, seek other plans when they are needed, get help from others, or, in other words, stick with your goal until it is accomplished.

As mentioned before, the first step to success takes place in your thought process, and the way in which we use it is extremely important for our success.

I wish you the best,

Positive Dividends through Service
by Napoleon Hill

A remarkable phenomenon which works almost without exception, and has worked since the beginning of mankind, is the law of compensation.

The more we give, the more we get. Bread cast upon the water will return to sustain and to strengthen the person who is rendering more service and better service than he or she is paid or expected to do.

Returns do not always come from the person to whom the gift or service was given. They usually do not, in fact. But returns will come and in kind. It may be early, it may be late, but it will come. The gift, the word, the attitude, the withholding of the gift, the withholding of the word – what you are will come home.

What is it you seek? Self-satisfaction? Revenge? Help another to experience these things, and they will become your own. Is it wealth, a superior grasp of some secrets of success? Is it more effective efforts toward business expansion?

The entire history of mankind, from the Stone Age to the present, provides indisputable evidence that man’s only real limitations are those which he sets up in his own mind, or accepts in the circumstances which surround him.

Fear will make a man miserly of his money, of his time, of his talents, and of his inner resources. Examine this thought. A man may give more time than is called for, out of fear – but the time will be given reluctantly and without real productiveness. His body may be weary, but he is resentfully weary, and sleep will not come easily as it does after physical strain willingly exerted.

But consider the man who goes the extra mile because he is eager to help get the job done well. Willingness to work extra hours, to do the extra bit of “rounding out” that puts the polish on an adequate product, results in a rewarding flood of “well-being” in the innermost consciousness. Even if no one notices at that moment or says “thank you,” it is enough to know that one has done a good job, an extra good job and that the pay is earned. The pure joy of having done more and a better job than was expected is what makes the difference between a worker and a drone. It is the difference between a period and an exclamation mark!

Going the extra mile pays off in prosperity – both in the heart and in the pocketbook. But do not forget that it is a fragile phenomenon. It must be tempered with self-discipline, as a reminder that the gift is not primarily in order to get a gift in return, but is a mile given, an hour overtime expended willingly, with the foremost idea being to “help thy brother’s boat to shore.” If you can perfect the attitude of helpfulness, for the pure joy of doing a better job for another person, then the delicate balance will become a part of your nature with unexpected dividends being realized in your own life.

Balancing the Scales
by Jim Stovall

Complaints have become an epidemic in our world today. Complaining is the latest and most popular full-contact sport in our society. Unfortunately, when you constantly and aggressively complain about poor performance and bad service, your verbal assaults and admonishments often fall on deaf ears. This is a result of the scales being out of balance. Your complaints are piled on top of everyone else’s complaints, creating a constant stream of complaint-filled conversation.

The people with hotels, restaurants, airlines, and all manner of businesses that hear these complaints are not able to distinguish them from all the other noise around them, because this is all they ever hear. Too often, we feel pre-programmed to catch people doing something wrong and tell them all about it.

I am on an ongoing quest to catch people doing something right and let them know about it. This makes me feel better. It makes them feel better. And I have been surprised to learn that it actually makes my complaints, suggestions, and constructive criticism more valid when a difficult situation arises.

When you find someone doing a menial, clerical, or service job well, be sure to tell them. Yours may be the only compliment they have received in weeks or even months. You will make their day, and I assure you that you will feel better. The serendipity will come into play when you find that if you require anything extra or have a situation you need corrected, these people will go out of their way to promptly and professionally serve you.

Recently, I had a flight attendant greet me by name as I walked onto a jet. Immediately my ego kicked in, and I assumed she recognized me from television, one of my convention or arena speeches, or possibly one of my brief appearances in a movie. It turns out it was nothing quite that grandiose. When I inquired how she knew my name, she informed me that I had been on a flight of hers several weeks previously, and I had complimented her on the meal and on the service. I will admit to you that I do not even remember the occasion that she referred to as it has become my practice to catch people doing something right. I did find it fascinating that, out of the thousands of passengers she encountered throughout a month, she remembered me simply from a brief compliment.

As you go through your day today, if you want to stand out from the crowd, don’t complain the loudest. Just catch people doing something right.

Today’s the day!
Jim Stovall
