Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

We are not just the results of fate; we are our own fate. As Proverbs says, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

We are simply our past thoughts and the sum total of the things that these thoughts have attracted to us.

Successful people have little time to think of failure, while people who are failures let their time be filled with ideas of failure. Shakespeare left us a lot to think about when he said, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” Understanding Shakespeare’s words will enable you to control every law of nature.

Each of us makes his own world—and he makes it through his mind. It is a fact of life that no two people see the same thing in the same way. Thoughts are the causes. Existing conditions are merely effects. Each of us molds himself and his surroundings by directing his thoughts toward his desired goals.

All thoughts should be tempered, not only with your mind but with your heart as well. Today, in honor of Valentine’s Day, we have singled out the “heart” of the matter in You Can Work Your Own Miracles by Napoleon Hill. We singled out paragraphs that contain the word “heart.” Going through these selections you can see the way Napoleon Hill viewed the matters of the heart. I think you will love these. Happy Valentine’s Day!

I wish you the best,

“From the Heart” excerpts from:
You Can Work Your Own Miracles
by Napoleon Hill

• As I slowly turned the pages of this astounding record in the Book of Time, I was shocked to discover that everything, every circumstance known to man, every mistake and every failure and every heartache, may become highly beneficial when one relates himself to them in a spirit of harmony and understanding of their nature and purpose.

Take heart from the promise that these corrective instructions will impose upon you no hardships nor actions beyond your ability to control. They have a price attached to them, but it is a price well within the means of all normal people. We are where we are and what we are because of our daily habits!

• Discouraging? Heartbreaking? Not at all, for I recognized from the beginning that out of my struggle would come triumph and victory in proportion to the labors invested in my task. In this hope I have not been disappointed, but I have been overwhelmed with the bountiful manner in which the world has responded and paid me tribute for the long years of struggle that went into my work.

• Poverty may become either a stumbling-block or a stepping-stone on which he may rise to whatever heights of achievement he may set his heart upon, depending entirely on his attitude toward it and his reactions to it.

• He who has not learned the blessed art of sharing his blessings with others has not found the true path to enduring happiness, for happiness comes mainly from sharing of one’s self and one’s blessings. Let it be remembered that the space one occupies in the hearts of others is determined precisely by the service he renders through some form of sharing. Let it also be remembered that all riches may be embellished and multiplied by the simple process of sharing them where they may serve others. Neglect or refusal to share one’s blessing is a sure way to cut the line of communication between a man and his soul. A great teacher said, “The greatest among you is he who becomes the servant of all.” Another philosopher said, “Help thy brother’s boat across, and lo! thine own hath reached the shore.” And still another great philosopher said, “Whatsoever you do to or for another, you do to or for yourself.”

• The person who is not the master of himself may never become the master of anything outside of himself. He who is the master of self may become the master of his own earthly destiny, and the “Master of his Fate, the Captain of his Soul.” The highest form of self-discipline consists in the expression of humility of the heart when one has attained great riches, or has been blessed with widespread recognition for services rendered.

(one of the causes of failure…)

• Lack of control over the emotions of the heart.

• From this brief analysis of the Law of Balance we are heartened and encouraged by the observation that this law keeps everything throughout the universe in line with nature’s established pattern and plan, except man—the only living creature with the power to deviate from the influence of this, and all other natural laws, if and when he chooses, and is willing to pay the price for his deviation.

If you are searching for the supreme secret of success in all human endeavors, here is a very suitable point at which to stop, ponder, meditate and think, with the hope that the small still voice which speaks from within may bless you with the knowledge you seek.

• TIME transmutes the wound of the heart and the frustrations of our daily lives into courage, endurance and understanding. Without this kindly and beneficent service most individuals would be lost in the early days of their youth.

• Go back into your past experiences and take count of the occasions when your troubled heart found no surcease from its aches save only by the merciful hand of Doctor Time.

• The individual who has the full support of his Conscience in connection with all his desires, aims and purposes, has direct access to the necessary Faith to enable him to accomplish whatever he may set his heart and mind upon.

• Finally, when my allotment of Time shall have expired, I hope I may leave behind me a monument to my name—not a monument in stone, but in the hearts of my fellowmen—a monument whose marking will testify that the world was made a little better because of my having passed this way.

Family Matters
by Jim Stovall

This past weekend, I undertook the annual pilgrimage to a neighboring state where I attended my family reunion. This yearly event has become somewhat of a regular parentheses in my personal and professional life. It is a time to escape my normal routine and consider the past, reevaluate the present, and contemplate the future.

My family is probably much like yours in that my ancestors ran the gambit of the human experience; therefore, to paraphrase Dickens, family histories can be the best of times and the worst of times. This year, one of my relatives conducted some impressive research and gave a report on a book she had compiled of our family’s history over the past three or four centuries. It was intriguing to consider that ancestors who populate my family tree distinguished themselves in all manner of pursuits including public service, business, ministry, and train robbery among many others.

It was Gandhi who gave us the enduring wisdom that every person is our superior in that we can learn something from them. Sometimes we learn things we want to emulate, and other times we learn things we want to avoid. I treasure the time I get to spend with my family and try to stay connected with them throughout the year as much as possible—more for my own personal enjoyment than from any sense of duty.

The four generations that were represented at this year’s gathering are a quality group of people I am proud to be a part of. Some of the individuals I am directly related to, and others are just friends who have attached themselves to our family. In any event, they are all tremendous assets in my life.

In my book The Ultimate Gift and the movie based upon it, I described a dysfunctional family trying to rectify the problems from the past. In the chapter entitled The Gift of Family, I gave my own definition: “Some people are born into wonderful families. Others have to find or create them. Being a member of a family is a priceless privilege which costs nothing but love.”

Here in the 21st century, while it’s easier to stay in touch with family members, we are in danger of losing some of the archives and records upon which future generations will depend. If you have family photos, correspondence, or other printed material, be sure to preserve it digitally and back it up in several places. While your most senior generation is alive and well, have them identify the people, places, and things in photos and family videos. Someday there will be no one around to identify those elements that have gone before.

If you think about an immediate or distant family member throughout the day, and you’re trying to decide whether you should contact them, the answer is always yes.

As you go through your day today, think of your family as a treasure, and treat them that way.

Today’s the day!
Jim Stovall
