Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Qualities such as persistence, working hard, and having integrity are all important if you are to succeed. Yet all of these will not assure your success.

The first step to success begins in our thought process. When Napoleon Hill put the three words, “Thoughts are things” at the beginning of the all-time bestseller, Think and Grow Rich! in 1937, he was stating an essential fact of the success process that he had discovered during his 20 years of research.

Thoughts truly are things, but it is important that the thought process concentrate on a purpose that will supply a human want and at the same time be something for which you have a deep passion. The reason passion is important is that even when you have a wonderful idea, if you do not have passion, you are likely to quit when the going gets tough. Passion will make you want to persist, seek other plans when they are needed, get help from others, or, in other words, stick with your goal until it is accomplished.

Napoleon Hill has made available his Science of Success course in many forms over the years. Today we at the Napoleon Hill Foundation have made it available via online distance learning. You can learn the secrets of “the success process” that Napoleon Hill gathered over a twenty-year period of time. Take advantage of this unscheduled “downtime” and turn it into a benefit for yourself and those around you. We have added a new division of the distance learning course for the increased demand. I hope that you can join us for this course that will begin on April 6, 2020.

I wish you the best,

Specialized Knowledge
by Napoleon Hill

The changed economic conditions prevailing since the depression have made it necessary for thousands of people to find additional, or new sources of income. For the majority of these, the solution to their problem may be found only by acquiring specialized knowledge. Many will be forced to change their occupations entirely. When a merchant finds that a certain line of merchandise is not selling, he usually supplants it with another that is in demand. The person whose business is that of marketing personal services must also be an efficient merchant. If his services do not bring adequate returns in one occupation, he must change to another, where broader opportunities are available.

Stuart Austin Wier prepared himself as a Construction Engineer and followed this line of work until the depression limited his market to where it did not give him the income he required. He took inventory of himself, decided to change his profession to law, went back to school and took special courses by which he prepared himself as a corporation lawyer. Despite the fact the depression had not ended, he completed his training, passed the Bar Examination, and quickly built a lucrative law practice, in Dallas, Texas; in fact he is turning away clients.

Just to keep the record straight, and to anticipate the alibis of those who will say, “I couldn’t go to school because I have a family to support,” or “I’m too old,” I will add the information that Mr. Wier was past forty, and married when he went back to school. Moreover, by carefully selecting highly specialized courses, in colleges best prepared to teach the subjects chosen, Mr. Wier completed in two years the work for which the majority of law students require four years. IT PAYS TO KNOW HOW TO PURCHASE KNOWLEDGE!

The person who stops studying merely because he has finished school is forever hopelessly doomed to mediocrity, no matter what may be his calling. The way of success is the way of continuous pursuit of knowledge.

Let us consider a specific instance. During the depression, a salesman in a grocery store found himself without a position. Having had some bookkeeping experience, he took a special course in accounting, familiarized himself with all the latest bookkeeping and office equipment, and went into business for himself. Starting with the grocer for whom he had formerly worked, he made contracts with more than 100 small merchants to keep their books, at a very nominal monthly fee. His idea was so practical that he soon found it necessary to set up a portable office in a light delivery truck, which he equipped with modern bookkeeping machinery. He now has a fleet of these bookkeeping offices “on wheels” and employs a large staff of assistants, thus providing small merchants with accounting service equal to the best that money can buy, at very nominal cost.

Specialized knowledge, plus imagination, were the ingredients that went into this unique and successful business. Last year the owner of that business paid an income tax of almost ten times as much as was paid by the merchant for whom he worked when the depression forced upon him a temporary adversity which proved to be a blessing in disguise.

Rain or Shine
by Jim Stovall

A wise man once told me, “People who think that it is never going to rain again are destined to get very wet.” Whether it’s the stock market, your health, the weather, or the economic conditions, change is inevitable. Success lies in creating a balance between planning for the best and preparing for the worst. There are some people who base everything in their personal and professional lives on a best-case scenario. Any minor bump in the road can cause these people to have a fatal crash. On the other hand, there are people who spend so much time planning for the proverbial rainy day that they never enjoy the sunshine.

Recently, I enjoyed a conference championship basketball game. One team was heavily favored, and they were way ahead with less than five minutes to go in the game. Their coach called time out and obviously changed their game plan. When they came back out on the floor, they held the ball and stalled for time trying to run out the clock. Unfortunately for them, this talented team was great at shooting and scoring but was not good at this delay tactic. They turned the ball over to the other team a number of times and lost the game in overtime. It could be said that they became a victim of their own caution.

On the other hand, often a reasonable degree of caution can be an investment of a few pennies for a return of many dollars. Recently, we installed a new computer system in our office. I will not bore you with the details as it would become immediately apparent that I know nothing about computers. The one important factor I do understand about this new computer is the dual safety backup system. For a relatively modest cost, we can protect ourselves against losing information worth many thousands of dollars if, indeed, the information could even be replaced at all. In all situations we must weigh both the risk and the reward.

Sometimes, the choices can be literally life and death. This year I have realized one of my long-term goals as we are traveling for a number of my events in a private plane. When making arrangements for our first trip, I noticed all of the expenses itemized in the contract. It listed fuel, airport charges, and the pilot’s fee. When I inquired about the cost of the co-pilot, I was told that they generally don’t provide one on private flights. When I found out the cost for the co-pilot was approximately $200, which represents a tiny fraction of the expense of traveling in a private plane, I let them know that I would always be traveling with a co-pilot. While the risk may be small, the consequences are permanent.

As you go through your day today, look for ways to both plan for the best and prepare for the worst.

Today’s the day!
Jim Stovall

A note of thanks to Mr. Stovall

Dear Mr.Stovall,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Rohit Bhattiprolu, I am 12 years old and am in 7th grade. At the beginning of this year I decided that every month in this year I would read at least one book. In January it was “The Secret To Teen Power”, in February it was “7 habits of Highly Affective Teens” which I didn’t finish. This month it was your book “The Millionaire Map”. This is my third time reading it and this time I decided that I was actually going to do something. I counted my money and figured out I have $115.18 at my house, and more in the bank that I’m not allowed to use. I have had two business ideas since my school closed, one will do amazing right now, one won’t make any money. The first one is the face scratcher, I have researched this and all that’s come up is this face scratcher for cats. My other idea is an app that you can find other people to play games with, sports, card games, board games, video games, any games there are. I have been working on both. Also, last year my aunt opened an account for me at the website stockpile. She put it $1000 for me to invest with. I just bought my first stock on the 23rd, it was Disney. Since then it has grown about 20 dollars. What are some good books for me to read? Can you please also, help me as I start my businesses and start investing more?

Thank You,
Rohit Bhattiprolu
