A System of Success

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

A book can awaken the genius that lies within and allows someone to do wonderful things, even though at the beginning of that person’s life, it appeared that he was not destined to do great deeds. Books can not only awaken you to a knowledge of your possibilities but create what Dr. Napoleon Hill and other writers have called a burning desire to accomplish the type of great deeds that most people will only dream about. Books can arouse you and others to express the best that is within them rather than being content with lesser accomplishments.

In William M. Thayer’s popular book, From Log-Cabin to the White House: Life of James A. Garfield, written in 1881, the reader was told that the lives of great men are an inspiration to the young. These great men have within themselves perseverance, honesty, and other virtues necessary for success. The qualities of successful men are simple truths that successful men have demonstrated by their deeds.

What better way could there be for the inquiring young mind to learn success than studying men and women who became successful by the choices that they made and the actions that they performed?

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “There is properly no history; only biography.” If Emerson’s statement is true, reading and learning from those who have succeeded is a profitable adventure. Learning about successful men and women from business, art, medicine, education, or other fields that benefit humanity will excite the reader to become successful as well.

The real reason to read about successful men and women is to learn how they achieved their success. These biographies are all true lessons in life from which the reader can glean life-changing ideas and examples.

Napoleon Hill offers many stories and examples of success that he accumulated over more than a twenty-year time span. We at the Napoleon Hill Foundation hope that you will take advantage of the rich knowledge he gathered in his final work PMA: Science of Success, now made available through our distance learning format. Awaken the genius that lies within you!

I wish you the best,
Don Green

You will come to the point, sooner or later, at which you will want to do something bigger and better than you have ever done before. When you do, you are going to be discouraged by those around you who know you best, and who will say the plan you have is foolish or beyond your power to carry out. You will find more people willing to tear you down by discouragement than you will find sympathizing with you and helping you to build your ego.

The best way to avoid such discouragement is to confide only in those who have a genuine sympathy with your cause and an understanding of your possibilities. Otherwise, keep your plans to yourself and let your actions speak. Adopt the motto Deeds-Not Words. It is a good motto for everyone.

It may not be in the best taste for you to overestimate your abilities, but it is better than to underestimate, and it will do less harm. If you aim at a very big achievement and attain only a moderate achievement, you will still have attained something. If you allow yourself to be held back before you even begin, you will have sold yourself short and will attain nothing.

Maybe you are a man with a big idea. You have nursed this idea for a long time. You have made an experimental model, or have worked it out on paper and refined it over a period of time until you know it will work. But you haven’t really done anything about it. Perhaps the reason you haven’t acted is that you lack the self-confidence sufficient to start you looking for a mastermind ally to help you carry out your idea.

The thing for you to do is take hold of the principles of this philosophy and apply them to yourself. It will do you no good to read these lessons and think, “That’s a wonderful lesson! I’ll bet it really works for somebody else.” Why not start building up your self-confidence through mastery and application of these time-tested principles which have lifted others from poverty to places of eminence? The rules will work for you as well as for anyone else, but you have to take the initiative. No one else will do it for you.

When a man can manage himself, he
is ready to start managing others.

You have every quality in the world that it takes to succeed if you will organize what you have according to the seventeen principles of this philosophy. To do that requires self-discipline, faith in yourself and concentration on your objective. Your success or failure is entirely a matter of how you discipline your mind.

The Age of Knowledge
by Jim Stovall

There are a number of periods in history that are considered to have been times of great knowledge and enlightenment. There are a handful of historical figures we consider to be the greatest minds of their time or even all times. We think of Albert Einstein, Leonardo DaVinci, and Thomas Edison among the greatest thinkers and innovators of the times in which they lived.

With regard to sheer knowledge, information, and potential expertise, these amazing people and hundreds of others collectively would be envious of you. Any high school student of average intelligence in the 21st century with a computer, Internet access, and a search engine, would be considered beyond a mega-genius at any time in recorded history.

If you are over 40 years of age, you remember a time when, if you wanted to know something, you had to go to a library, call someone, or consult your family’s Encyclopedia to even obtain a small amount of information. Now if you want to know who pitched the third game of the World Series in 1937 or how many longhorn cattle there are in Arkansas or how much tea there actually is in China, all you need do is go to the nearest computer or smartphone, type in a few brief commands, and there it is.

Knowledge is the beginning of all good things we can have in life. Ignorance is the curse that keeps people from these good things. There is no excuse in the 21st century for being ignorant. I have heard people say, “I don’t know how to use a computer” or “I don’t have access to the Internet.” You are currently reading a column written by a guy who cannot physically read a computer screen and does not know how to type on a computer keyboard. Nevertheless, I regularly tap into endless knowledge through the Internet with a little help from my colleagues.

Curiosity for most thinking people who have ever lived on earth was a natural, ongoing state. It was normal for people to think and even say, “I’ve always wondered….” In the past, people heard their parents and grandparents curiously remark, “I wonder….” Generations of people heard the question but simply did not have access to the answer. We live in a world today where the rules have changed. People who will prosper play by the new rules. If you believe that the winners are the people who get the most, you must understand that the people who get the most know the most.

As you go through your day today, commit to no longer idly wondering about things. Find the answers, realize that these answers will lead you to more questions, and know that those questions will lead you to your destiny.

Today’s the day!
