A System of Success

Sign up today!

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Humans have a creative mind and are capable of creating results that have not existed before. However, a thought must exist before the mind can work. Remember, in all instances, a thought exists before a thing.

It is worth repeating many times that ideas within the mind are limited only by those limits placed on the mind by the individual.

Our mental attitude determines our condition and
every experience we have in life. We can do only
that which we think we can do. What we do,
what we are, and what we have all depend
upon what we think.

It is a fact that we can never express anything that we do not first have in our minds. If there is a secret, this is it—all power, all riches, and all success must first be thoughts built into our own minds.

The mind has the benefit and use of both forms of imagination. Most inventors use the form known as synthetic imagination. The use of synthetic imagination permits us to take plans, ideas, products, and projects; simply rearrange, alter, or add to them; and thus bring about new products. Most of Thomas Edison’s inventions fall into this category.

Creative imagination is the process by which the imagination uses infinite intelligence and receives new ideas. Creative imagination is used by the great minds, whether they are business people, musicians, or writers, to create new ideas.

In today’s excerpt from The Science of Success, Napoleon Hill shares with us an exercise for enhancing our creative vision. Try it out!

I wish you the best,
Don Green

CREATIVE VISION

by Napoleon Hill

Creative vision, expressed by men and women who have been unafraid of criticism has been responsible for the civilization of today as we know it. It has also been responsible for the scientific inventions of modem times which have led first to the steamboat age during the days of Robert Fulton; then the railroad age, the electrical age, the steel and iron age, the department store age, the skyscraper age, the automobile age, the airplane age, the age of plastics, and finally the atomic and space age.

Creative vision inspires men to pioneer and to dare to experiment with new ideas in every field of endeavor. It is always on the lookout for better ways of doing man’s labor and supplying man’s needs.

Creative vision is a quality of mind belonging only to men and women who follow the habit of going the extra mile, for it recognizes no such thing as the regularity of working hours, is not concerned with monetary compensation, and its highest aim is to do the impossible.

Creative vision may be an inborn quality of the mind, or it may be an acquired quality, for it may be developed by the free and fearless use of the faculty of the imagination.

There are two types of imagination:

(a) Synthetic imagination, which consists of a combination of previously recognized ideas, concepts, plans or facts arranged in a new order, or put to a new use.

(b) Creative imagination, which has its base in the subconscious section of the mind, and serves as the medium by which basically new facts or ideas are revealed through the faculty of the sixth sense.

It is known that any idea, plan or purpose, brought into the conscious mind repeatedly and supported by emotional feeling, is automatically picked up by the subconscious section of the mind and carried out to its logical conclusion by means of whatever practical media are available.

Understand this truth and it will be clear why you should adopt a definite major purpose and begin at once to carry it out. The understanding of this truth will also reveal one of the major benefits of the mastermind principle, as a mastermind alliance in operation inspires the use of the imagination, and leads to the development of creative vision.

Creative vision is definitely and closely related to that state of mind known as faith, and it is significant that those who have demonstrated the greatest amount of creative vision are known to have been men with a great capacity for faith. This is both logical and understandable when we recognize that faith is the means of approach to Infinite Intelligence, the source of all knowledge and all facts, both great and small.

AN EXAMPLE OF CREATIVE VISION

Creative vision extends beyond interest in material things. It judges the future by the past, and concerns itself with the future more than with the past. Imagination is influenced and controlled by the powers of reason and experience. Creative vision pushes both of these aside and attains its ends basically by new ideas and methods.

While imagination recognizes limitations, handicaps and opposition, creative vision rides over these as if they did not exist and arrives at its destination. Imagination is seated in the intellect of man. Creative vision has its base in the spirit of the universe which expresses itself through the brain of man. Let us examine a few more examples of applied creative vision:

Dr. Elmer Gates, a contemporary of Thomas A. Edison, lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland. While Mr. Edison had but little formal schooling, Dr. Gates was skilled in many of the sciences and had the benefit of an extensive formal education.

He was recognized throughout the world of science as a scientist of the highest caliber, and his scientific inventions, as disclosed by the records of the U. S. Patent Office, outnumbered those of Mr. Edison two to one. He began his career, as did Mr. Edison, by depending at first upon his imagination, and then developed it into creative vision through constant application and use.

During the latter portion of Dr. Gates’ life he earned his living entirely by the application of his highly developed power of creative vision. His method of application is worthy of consideration by the most profound thinkers, because it proves that one may develop the faculty of imagination until it leads to the power of creative vision.

Your mind may create some good ideas if you don’t keep it too busy with poor ones.

Let us recall Dr. Gates’ method of applying creative vision “the habit of sitting for ideas,” for that is precisely what he did. For this purpose he had a soundproof room in which he did the “sitting.” When he wanted a solution to a problem, he went into this room, closed the door, seated himself at a table supplied with pencil and paper, and turned off the lights. He then concentrated his thoughts upon the nature of his problem, and waited for the reception of ideas that he needed for its solution.

Sometimes the ideas would immediately begin to flow into his mind. At other times he waited for an hour or more before they began to make their appearance. And on some occasions no ideas came through.

Dr. Gates refined and perfected more than two hundred and fifty patents by this method. These patents covered ideas which inventors, who had less creative vision than he, had undertaken to perfect, but on which the other inventors had fallen short of success. He added to their ideas the finishing touches that were needed to give them mechanical perfection.

His method of sitting for ideas was simple. He began by examining the application for the patent until he found its weakness, using his own testing laboratory or, when necessary, that of the U.S. Bureau of Standards. Then he went into his soundproof room, with the patent application and the drawings explaining the application, placed them before him on the table, and waited for the unknown quantity to appear. When it did appear, it came in the form of an idea which provided the information he was seeking.

Dr. Gates’ skill in the use of creative vision was so well known, and so trustworthy, that he was retained by many large industrial corporations for the purpose of helping them solve some of their mechanical, economic and industrial problems. He was paid a handsome fee for his time.

When Dr. Gates was asked to explain the source from which he received his results while sitting for ideas, he gave the following explanation:

“The source of all ideas may be classi6ed under the following headings:

(a) The knowledge acquired from individual experience, observation, education. The storehouse of the memory.

(b) The store of knowledge accumulated by others through the same media, which may be contacted through mental telepathy.

(c) The universal storehouse of Infinite intelligence, wherein is stored all knowledge and all facts, which may be contacted through the subconscious section of the mind.

“When I sit for ideas, I may tune in to one or all of these sources. If other sources of ideas are available, I do not know what they are.”

Observe that Dr. Gates’ method of sitting for ideas was based upon the application of the big four principles of this philosophy, plus a fifth principle, creative vision.

Illusion and Reality
by Jim Stovall

I have had the privilege of having four of my novels, to date, turned into movies. The process of making a movie is far from the experience of enjoying a movie. Making a movie is tedious, time-consuming, and—quite simply—hard work.

In each of my movie projects, I strived to tell a great story and help people examine their own reality. There is probably less reality in the movie business than anywhere in the world except for reality television. Illusions are not reality, but they can teach us and motivate us. Given a strong enough image, an illusion will eventually become reality.

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to work with the actor Gary Busey. Gary is known for many things on and off the screen, but I believe Gary Busey’s greatest accomplishment was playing Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story. Busey not only came to life on the screen as Buddy Holly, he performed much of Buddy Holly’s well-known music. When shown pictures of Buddy Holly and Gary Busey side by side, more people identify Busey as Buddy Holly than identify the real Buddy Holly.

Early in my career, I got to meet and interview the great actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Fairbanks is best known for his movie roles in the 1940s and 50s; but when I got to know him, I was most intrigued to learn about his boyhood years. His father, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and his stepmother Mary Pickford, partnered with Charlie Chaplin to found one of the great movie studios United Artists. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. told me that growing up with Charlie Chaplin as a family friend was a great adventure for him when he was a young boy. Mr. Fairbanks described Charlie Chaplin as “the perfect playmate for an eight-year-old boy.”

Chaplin was an iconic figure of his time and among the best-known actors during the silent movie era. At the height of his popularity, Chaplin heard that they were having a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest in Times Square in New York City. Chaplin decided to get dressed in his famous movie wardrobe and enter the contest himself. Ironically, the real Charlie Chaplin took third place in a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest. Illusions can not only impact reality, but perceptions can become reality.

If you will focus on your dreams and visions of the future, you will find that, with persistence, they will become reality.

As you go through your day today, remember today’s illusion can be tomorrow’s reality.

Today’s the day!
