A System of Success

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

To begin your journey, you must begin with the right ideas that can grow the desire until it becomes a burning desire.

There are both great destinies and obstacles in your future, but you were born with the powers and capabilities that will let you improve your situation and be a success. You have the gifts that will let you make the right choices and take action, with your success or failure hanging in the balance. But this all begins with IDEAS.

The key to achieve what you want out of life lies in establishing meaningful goals. You must continue to feed your minds with thoughts and ideas that are consistent with your goals.

Always keep paper and a pen close by. You may wake up with ideas on your mind. Learn to immediately take a legal pad and write down your thoughts while they are still new.

Once you have written down your thoughts, keep them on 3 x 5 cards where they are readily available. Only by keeping ideas nearby will you be likely to see opportunities that will help you to bring the ideas to completion. If you don’t have some ideas at the moment, jot down some of the ideas Napoleon Hill mentions below. Sometimes we all need a little help to begin our journey to success.

I wish you the best,
Don Green

by Napoleon Hill

The one thing this philosophy cannot do for you is make up your mind about what it is that you desire most from life, or what should be your definite goal. That is something that you and you alone can decide. We know how extremely difficult it is for most people to reach this decision; therefore we have outlined some ideas which you should include in your overall goal in life. This goal might be likened to a blueprint you are drawing of your future life, including every single element you can possibly anticipate at this time as an object of your desire.

Look ahead and visualize your own possible growth; see yourself five years from today; then ten years, and so on, in five year periods. Or you may take a shorter, closer view, say from one year to a maximum of five years. If you are not accustomed to setting up goals and achieving them, and if you are not accustomed to long-range planning, start out with a minor, but important, purpose. Set up a purpose which must be accomplished, say within six months or a year from now. Then as it is achieved, set yourself another higher, more difficult and longer-range objective, thus growing into the habit before setting down your goal for your lifetime.

To be an educated man you must learn how to get what you want without violating the rights of others.

Your goal in life should consist of that which can be attained only by a series of day-to-day and month-to-month steps. It should harmonize with your present occupation, business or profession, so as to capitalize on your experience and background, and so that each day’s work will enable you to come one day nearer the attainment of your goal. It should represent your greatest purpose, the one single purpose which above all others you desire to achieve, and the fruits of which you are willing to leave behind as a monument to yourself.

Your objective, or some portion of it, should always remain a few jumps ahead of you, as something to which you may look with hope and anticipation. The hope of achievement is one of the great riches of life. Once you have caught up with your goal, a new expanded and widened purpose should be adopted. To test whether the objective you have in mind is worthy of being a specific goal in life, ask yourself these questions: Are you willing to spend most of your lifetime making it come true? Will it be worth the price you may pay for it?

Your specific aim or ambition may result from the attainment of different combinations of lesser or minor aims, such as:

a. The nature of your occupation, which should be of your own choice.

b. The amount of your weekly, monthly, or yearly income, which should be sufficient to enable you to live a planned life at the standards of living which you have chosen.

c. The budgeting of income and expenses so as to provide for sickness, accidents, old age and loss of earning power.

d. A plan for developing and maintaining harmony in all of your human relationships: in your home, at work, where you play, and relax. Human relationships are vital to your aim in life, since you must have the cooperation of others in order to achieve any success above mediocrity.

Do not hesitate to choose a definite goal which may for the time being be out of your reach, for you may always prepare yourself to obtain whatever qualification you will require for your objective. Always allow for personal growth and the development of your innate talent.

Don’t be afraid to aim high in choosing your life goal, for the higher it is, the more room you will have for achievement.

Here is an old Oriental proverb: A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. It is difficult to anticipate just how a situation will develop in every detail until you take a step forward and try out your present equipment. Then, if weaknesses appear, you will have clues as to how to strengthen your resources. No scheme or plan is perfect. Perfection is a process, not an end.

A little job well done is the first step towards a bigger one.

If the engineer in a train waited to see the block signals show green all the way to his destination, you may be sure no trains would run. But he doesn’t do that; he opens the throttle as soon as he sees one or two green lights lining up and is confident that as the train gains speed and momentum, other lights ahead will Hash the GO signal.

And here is a final word about the selection of your aim and objective before we give you the mechanics of how to proceed. You know that you will probably never feel that you are completely ready to start any project. There will always be something else you could do in preparation for your take-off. But if you start where you stand and work with whatever tools you have at hand, other and better goals will reveal themselves as you move forward.

Illusion and Reality
by Jim Stovall

Most projects go through two phases: creation and production. In some cases, this might be called ideas and follow through. These are two totally separate and distinct functions. Both functions are imperative, but they are far from interchangeable and should not be intermingled if you are going to be maximizing your potential.

My late, great friend Robert Schuller often said, “Never get the ‘how are you going to do it’ phase mixed up in the ‘what are you going to do’ phase.” What this means is that we should never limit what we are going to do based on the things we know how to do.

If you decide to travel from your hometown to a distant city, there are a myriad of variables that can impact your trip that cannot be anticipated. You simply can’t wait until all the traffic lights are green before you leave home. Your flight may be delayed, there may be detours along the highway, or you can experience car trouble and other unforeseen challenges.

In order for you to arrive at your destination, you must first establish your destination and then begin your journey. While planning is important, some of the variables must be dealt with while you’re on the move.

In my organization, there are idea people and there are logistical people. They are both valuable within their own time and place; however, if you get the logistical people involved while you’re in the idea stage, they will begin anticipating problems and formulating contingencies for things you are only considering. This will limit your ideas and the scope of your potential greatly.

On the other hand, if you simply turn the idea people loose, they will come up with endless big-picture thoughts that may not be practical or even doable. You really need a two-phased approach. First, you decide what you are going to do, considering elements such as: Is it good? Is it right? Is it beneficial? Is it profitable? And does it line up with our mission? Then you move to the second phase and deal with questions such as: What will it cost? How will it impact what we are doing now? What are all of the anticipated challenges? How will we deal with unforeseen contingencies? And many others.

I have met many would-be authors who have a title in mind, and they are trying to write a book to fit their title.

Labels are important once you establish a product or service, but be careful not to limit something by virtue of its definition or title.

As you go through your day today, imagine the possibilities, then consider the practicalities.

Today’s the day!

THE GIFT OF GIVING

by Napoleon Hill

Why leave a legacy when you can live one right now?

When you realize that your success journey is really a journey of giving, you will unlock the potential for profound riches. The world’s top entrepreneurs and leaders derive their success and fulfillment from the alignment of their professional endeavors with their search for meaning and impact. Rather than waiting until they feel they have something to offer, they consistently share their resources to better the lives of others. Now is the time for you to discover your unique gifts and create a giving plan so that you can begin to live your legacy.

The Gift of Giving traces the ultimate giving journeys of Jim Stovall and Don Green, who have implemented Napoleon Hill’s timeless achievement principles to live a legacy of generosity. When Jim Stovall committed to finding a driving passion and giving away $1 million to it, he was a broke college student whose dreams of playing in the NFL had been sidelined by a rare condition causing progressive blindness. With the guidance of the successful businessman Lee Braxton and a worn copy of Think and Grow Rich, Jim brought himself from poverty to prosperity and became an award-winning entrepreneur and philanthropist. His journey connected him with Don Green, the executive director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, who lives out his calling and continues Hill’s work through the Foundation’s many philanthropic efforts. Together, their stories reveal that you can render service and charity at every stage of your giving journey; you simply have to identify opportunities for generosity and take action on them.

You have everything you need to create your legacy. The time has come to live it now, while you can enjoy the gift of giving.
