Dear Readers,
You should relate to your belief system or faith as a source of energy, but if there is a secret, it is this: action is a key component. Having your mind under your complete control will allow you to remove limitations that you have previously applied to yourself or allowed others to apply to you.
A strong purpose or aim gives direction, will power, and the necessary energy to persevere in all one’s efforts. Controlled Attention and self-discipline assures success, and even with talent and intellect, a person with no purpose or aim in life will be a failure. We should have some definite purpose in front of us, some goal that we are striving to reach; we cannot expect to reach great heights without a worthy purpose in mind. Nature holds for each of us everything that she needs to make her useful and happy, but nature requires people to labor for what they get. Overcoming the obstacles in front of each of us requires strong efforts and perseverance.
As we continue our journey through the principles of success once again we have come to the principle of CONTROLLED ATTENTION. In order to make it a little more interesting this week, I am featuring “the tenth step to riches” that is in Think and Grow Rich – The Mystery of Sex Transmutation. This particular excerpt is from our new book called Think and Grow Rich in Ten Minutes a Day. I think it is appropriate to put this “step” under the heading of CONTROLLED ATTENTION because it requires us to redirect our energy and control our attention to a more creative and productive endeavor. Redirecting energy to a more productive purpose is what Napoleon Hill’s stepmother did when she exchanged his gun for a typewriter. Instead of shooting up the town with a gun, she helped him begin his journey to “shooting up” the pages with words using a typewriter.

The desire for sexual expression is by far the strongest and most impelling of all the human emotions, and for this very reason this desire, when harnessed and transmuted into action, other than that of physical expression, may raise one to the status of a genius.
The Great Motivator
When driven by [sexual] desire, men develop keenness of imagination, courage, will-power, persistence, and creative ability unknown to them at other times.
Hill discovered that individuals who had reached the apex of success shared two unique traits: they had what he calls a “highly developed sex nature,” and they were motivated by the influence of someone to whom they were sexually attracted. For such individuals, these two forces serve as a major source of action for them, energizing them to implement their definite plans and persevere through challenging times.
Sex, as one of the three great positive emotions (along with love and faith), induces a state of mind conducive to attracting riches, material and otherwise. When sexual desire arises in an individual, it stimulates the mind to vibrate at a higher rate, creating a more direct line between that individual and Infinite Intelligence. The mystery of sex transmutation functions according to the same basic logic as the psychological principle of sublimation, though without the moralizing over what constitutes “acceptable” and “unacceptable” drives: impulses can be redirected toward more productive means by harnessing them and giving them a positive outlet. In other words, sexual energy is converted into creative output through the application of willpower, courage, imagination, persistence, and creative ability.
Raw sexual energy is constructive in nature and can be directed toward three positive ends:
- Ensuring the perpetuation of the human race
- Maintaining sound mental health
- Discarding mediocrity for creative genius
However, many people misuse it, dissipating its energy through overindulgence in physical ends meant only to gratify the individual’s carnal nature. This tendency is heightened in youth, which is one reason why most people do not amass great riches until they are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.
Geniuses Are Made, Not Born
Love, Romance, and Sex are all emotions capable of driving men to heights of super achievement.
Hill believed that genius is not an inborn trait; rather, it is something that can be cultivated through the enlargement of one’s thoughts and willingness to take action on them. Genius is the result of stimulating one’s thoughts so that they vibrate at a much higher frequency than normal thought, thereby attracting constructive vibrations from Infinite Intelligence (inspiration). This, in turn, results in higher-quality, wider-ranging thoughts that support the functioning of the creative imagination, which can pair with Infinite Intelligence to generate new knowledge. As you’ll recall from Chapter 5, the creative imagination is the only way of producing entirely new ideas. The synthetic imagination, otherwise known as the reasoning faculty, reorganizes existing knowledge to produce new combinations. Although it often is responsible for translating desire into riches, the synthetic imagination is prone to error because it results largely from an individual’s personal experience, which is altered by bias, memory, and other subjective elements.
The mind can be stimulated to a higher rate of vibration primarily through the following means:
- Sexual desire
- Love
- Burning desire for fame, power, or financial riches
- Music
- Friendship
- Mastermind Alliance
- Mutual suffering (as through shared persecution)
- Autosuggestion
- Fear
- Drugs and alcohol
The last two are destructive mental stimulants that can affect the mind in unpredictable and volatile ways. When one or more of these ten stimulants activates the mind and the creative imagination, the individual loses their bondage to lower-order concerns like food, shelter, and clothing and becomes focused almost exclusively on the creative expression of their ideas and the translation of desire into reality.
Many of the world’s greatest inventors have leveraged the power of sexual energy to create new knowledge by engaging in the following process:
1. Begin by organizing and combining known ideas and experiences through the synthetic imagination.
2. Using one of the eight constructive mental stimulants mentioned above, activate the mind so that it vibrates at a higher-than-average rate.
3. Concentrate on the combination or product of the known elements until a perfect mental picture results. Hold this picture in the mind until the subconscious grasps onto it.
4. Once it becomes embedded in the subconscious, clear the mind of all thought and await an answer (in the form of inspiration) to “flash” into the mind.

My Story of Controlled Attention

Napoleon Hill says, “Put all your eggs in one basket and concentrate your attention on protecting that basket and getting it to market.” This is what I passionately applied in the year of 2001. At the very young age of sixteen I left home in search of my dreams. My desire was to become a Civil Engineer. No matter what awaited me this was my great desire.
In 2003, while I was still a student, I set out to generate income and move up the professional ladder. My parents, who are humble farmers, did not have the resources to help me greatly, yet they did make an effort to give me what little they could – $30 to $40 a month. I greatly appreciated their generosity and their belief in my dreams, but this did not cover the basic living expenses.
I heard a saying that goes like this – “if you want to succeed you must be willing to pay the price.” I began to do just that by starting pre-professional practices. The payment per week was a hamburger and a glass of juice. But I didn’t mind the small compensation because I was there to learn all I could about this area of interest. Eventually, I was given more responsibility and I was placed in charge of the management of important projects. I controlled my attention to win and grow, this allowed me to direct important projects of more than $100 million in the mining and construction industry. I had earned this position of great responsibility.
In 2012, I set out to become a businesswoman. I opened my own construction company along with two other businesses. The businesses were very successful. But in 2015, I was swindled out of more than $5 million on one particular project. I went into bankruptcy and ended up loaded with great debt (with outstanding payments to workers and suppliers). It was a very challenging and difficult time that greatly affected my life. But I held my head up high, rolled up my sleeves, and concentrated my attention on getting out of debt.
Looking back, I realize now, that I achieved my goals and got out of the failure by focusing on my Definiteness of Purpose, and using applied faith, personal initiative, going the extra mile, learning from defeat, accurate thinking and the gift of controlled attention.
In 2017, I read the book Think and Grow Rich. Napoleon Hill says that “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe the mind can achieve.” I controlled my attention and began to look for people of the same mindset as myself. People who applied the principles and were successful. I traveled to Colombia and Mexico to learn more about Napoleon Hill but they did not know how to explain to me, in depth, the principles of success. By mid-2018, I made the effort to go to the source. I contacted the Napoleon Hill Foundation and I learned about the Leader Certification process and I focused on getting my certification. After completing all the steps I can proudly say that I am now a Certified Leader!
Today my purpose is to teach and inspire others by sharing the principles of success with the entire Latino community. I want to help them create and live the life that they truly desire! I certainly can say that I would not have been able to achieve all this without the principle of Controlled Attention.
