The Next Distance Learning Class begins on February 15, 2021.
Sign up today!

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

You could choose to go out hunting or do drugs or stay home and watch soap operas. We have the ability to make that choice. The choices we make become habits. Habits in turn define who we are, good or bad. Our minds will accept positive information; they’ll also accept negative information. The thought we dwell on the most is the one we’re most likely to become.

The first of the great riches of life is a positive mental attitude. The second is sound physical health. We all know how important this is. Hill talks about health consciousness, which is produced by a mind that thinks in terms of health and not of illness; it also includes temperance of habits in eating and properly balanced physical activities.

You will need discipline over your thought habits, by keeping your mind busily occupied in thinking and planning for the things and circumstances you desire and off of those you do not desire.

Napoleon Hill tells us that we have the power to choose which thoughts can dominate our mind. It takes conscious choice and self-discipline. Napoleon Hill reminds us to use the power of Cosmic Habitforce to its fullest potential so that we can achieve our most worthy goals.

I wish you the best,

I want to tell you that the major purpose of all my books, including Think and Grow Rich, and of my personal lectures, is not necessarily to tell people that which they don’t already know, but to inspire them to use their own minds, and to make a better use of the things they already know. I want you to know that’s the purpose of this talk tonight.

Cosmic habit force is a law of the universe into which all of the other natural laws blend and become a part. It’s the comptroller of all of the natural laws, you might say. I want to tell you that there are three factors that enter into it that are quite important. These three factors are, first of all, as I have called to your attention many times, nature has given to every individual the most precious thing available to mankind, and this thing which has been given to mankind by nature has never been given to any other living creature. It is nothing more nor less than the power of control over one’s mind. Second, nature has provided mankind with the means by which he may organize this great privilege of using his own mind, and direct it to any end he pleases. The means by which this may be done is the law of cosmic habit force. The third factor is that in order to make use of this law, there must be a technique, a plan, a method.

This law explains the importance of habits in our lives. It’s interesting to know how habits are formed. I read a little piece not long ago which says: “Vice is a monster of so frightful a mien that to be hated, it needs but to be seen. Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face, we first endure, then pity, and then embrace.” That’s the way
bad habits are formed, a little at a time. I saw something in a journal not long ago that fitted into this lesson tonight beautifully. In one sentence, the writer says that habit is at first like a cobweb. Then it grows to be a strong cable with which many people bind themselves for life. What an interesting and correct statement that is.

I saw something in a journal not long ago that fitted into this lesson beautifully. In one sentence, the writer says that habit is at first like a cobweb. Then it grows to be a strong cable with which many people bind themselves for life. What an interesting and correct statement that is.

Here is where cosmic habit force should be applied to definite circumstances in order to take possession of your own mind, and to direct it to whatever destiny you want to carry out. I want you to observe very carefully how well this principle fits in with principles discussed on previous broadcasts, especially definiteness of purpose. Because the first place where you want to start using the law of cosmic habit force is in connection with definiteness of purpose. You want to begin by deciding on that definite major purpose, talking to yourself about it, and dealing with your subconscious mind exactly as if it were another person.

Definiteness of purpose is the beginning point where you’ll learn to make the most profitable use of this great law of cosmic habit force. Draw a clear picture of the thing you wish to attain in life, the person you wish to be, the place you wish to go, and then repeat that in your mind many hundreds of times a day until cosmic habit force has a chance to pick up that picture and automatically work it into a habit. You’ll find that after that is accomplished practically everything and every circumstance that confronts you will bring you nearer and nearer to the object of your purpose, whatever it may be.

The next place to apply cosmic habit force is establishing the definite routine for developing a health consciousness. You don’t just develop a health consciousness by wanting to be healthy—everybody wishes to be healthy. No, I beg your pardon, that isn’t true. There are people who enjoy poor health, and we call them a $64 word: hypochondriacs. But generally speaking, other than the hypochondriac, most people want sound physical health, but I fear they don’t have the best of knowledge as to how to go about getting that.

If you want to have sound physical health, you’ve got to think in terms of health. Stop imagining that you’re suffering with all kinds of ailments, like the hypochondriac does. You’ve got to work at that. You’ve got to think about it day in and day out. I never go to bed at night that I don’t sit down on the side of my bed and express my gratitude to the prince of sound physical health for keeping me in such fine condition. If perchance I do get up with a bad headache of a morning, which is very rare, I immediately go back to trace the cause, and I get right after the prince of sound physical health and ask him to do something about that cause. So far, he hasn’t let me down.

The next practical application of cosmic habit force is the development and the maintenance of a positive mental attitude. Ladies and gentlemen, you don’t get a positive mental attitude by allowing all of the circumstances of life to fix themselves upon you whether you want them to or not. I’ve heard people say, “Well, I had an experience today with a certain person, which made me very angry.” Ladies and gentlemen, nobody is going to make me angry unless I wish to become angry, because I have a system of keeping my mind positive, of keeping things that would ordinarily annoy people or anger people out of my mind. I don’t react to them. I do react, but just as if they didn’t happen. I do not permit them to destroy my system of maintaining a positive mental attitude.

As the result of this particular principle, you may be interested in knowing that within the last fourteen years, since I discovered the law of cosmic habit force and began to use it, I have placed myself in a position in life where I have everything in the world that I want or need or can possibly use, including peace of mind, including sound physical health, including the joy of being of service to people, in writing books and delivering lectures. Prior to that time, I had just as much knowledge about the science of success as I now have, but I didn’t have peace of mind, I didn’t have sound physical health; I didn’t have a lot of things because I hadn’t worked out a definite way of establishing a positive mental attitude, and keeping it positive at all times.

Ladies and gentlemen, you may have noticed that I have referred to rivers often in these broadcasts. Perhaps these references were inspired by the beautiful Salt River, the three forks of which flow into the Mississippi River, and the beautiful Middle Salt which runs right through Paris. It twists and turns lazily, creating rich farmland as well as good fishing and recreation. The people of Paris can enjoy their river, but they must not follow its example. If Paris is to prosper, its people must forge ahead in a straight line, with a purpose and a plan taken over by habit to propel them directly to where they want to go. Ladies and gentlemen, this concludes my series of broadcasts here in Paris, Missouri, on the principles of success. Members of this community have faced, and continue to face, many adversities. I was invited here by a farsighted businessman in town who has used my teachings to achieve success. He believed my lectures could help you all overcome the obstacles you face. I hope that these broadcasts will help you overcome these adversities and that you will find success and happiness. Thank you very, very much for welcoming me to Paris. I have greatly enjoyed my time here.

Good night and good wishes.

The Power of Habits
by Jessica Ewert

Have you ever wanted to write an important text for your business but then preferred to distract yourself by reading the newspapers? Would you rather drink vegetable juice but found yourself mechanically going for your morning coffee? It’s so appealing because you have solidified it through repetition. Over and over again. I ask you another question. How are you doing in everyday life? Are you in balance or do you feel trapped in the daily grind? Do you set out to change something every day, but keep being overtaken by the obligations of everyday life? And it’s not just obligations, but also a lot of thought loops that are preventing you? Well, I’ve lived like this for a long time, day in and day out. I rushed from appointment to appointment, got stuck in a traffic jam, and because of office work I couldn’t pick up my children from kindergarten on time. Something always came up that blocked the way to my heart’s desires.

But at some point, I said: stop! It cannot go on like this. What is preventing me from changing certain things? What are the causes? How do I get out of this downward spiral? One cause is the great power of habit. The force of habit is the law that subjects every living being, every particle of matter to the influence of its environment. It can work for you or against you. It is your decision. The greatest example of the cosmic habit force is the action of the cosmos. Look at the starry sky at night: stars and planets move with clock-like precision. A complex system of gravity and inertia, attraction, and repulsion keeps things moving so precisely that humans have been able to predict the position of stars and planets, the timing of solar eclipses, and the regularity of meteor showers for millennia. Giraffes do not give birth to tadpoles. Clouds do not release milk. Everything does what is its nature. All of this is a reflection of the universal order that makes so much of the physical workings of the world understandable. All actions and reactions are determined on this basis.

I realized: I am where I am because of my established thoughts and habits. And I questioned all the habits and tried to find a way to change them. How can you now take control of this order? Take control of your habits. And then one thing becomes very clear to you: your thoughts and actions are just as much a part of nature as Pluto’s orbit is part of nature. And if your habits are positive, so will the seeds you plant. This cosmic habit force always works! But that also means that if your habits are negative, your results are also negative. And how do you get control of your habits? You can only get it through self-discipline and a lot of repetition of good habits. Repetition makes habits part of your nature. Then they are no longer strenuous.

First of all, you should know and understand your main purpose in life. You write this goal down, read it out loud each morning, and internalize it. You should focus on this goal and walk step by step towards that goal every day. In this way, you will automatically notice when you are doing something that does not lead you to your goal. If you really want to be successful then you should scan your habits.

The positive habits are the ones that bring you closer to your goal. The negative habits are the things that take you away from your goal, the more you repeat these habits, the stronger they become and they can even become obsessive. See your way to the main destination as a wonderfully exciting journey to your heart’s desire. And please direct yourself back onto your path. Wondering how you can do this? Well, you have a great ability to control your thoughts. You create thinking habits by repeating certain ideas in your head. The force of habit takes over these thought patterns and makes them more or less permanent. This depends on the intensity of the repetition. And then you implement this thought pattern in exactly the same way. Yes, they come true. Just as you imagined. That is a law of nature. The same thing will happen with physical habits. We all understand what eating habits do. But even if you walk the same route to and from work every day, you are making that route a habit. You will probably only become aware of this if you have to change your route. If you are not careful about this from the start, you will likely miss the right path and get lost. That is precisely why you need to know and control all of your habits.

Here is another example. If your dominant habits are thoughts of poverty, Cosmic Habit Force will create poverty in your life. If your dominant habits are prosperity and peace, you will evoke prosperity and peace. There is an endless cycle here. Repeating a habit reinforces it until it becomes an obsession. You can be obsessed with poverty or achievement. It is a fact. Once you have this internalized, you will immediately see that as long as you have the strength to shape and express your thoughts, you can change the circumstances of your life in the direction you want. When you’re still living in circumstances that don’t suit you. Change it! You can change that. You give this force a precise pattern that it should follow. How long it takes to condition your mind to achieve positive results depends almost entirely on how much confidence and enthusiasm you put behind your thoughts, words, and actions. All voluntary positive habits are products of willpower aimed at achieving certain goals. You can also project this principle razor-sharp onto money and earn exactly the amount you want. Make your habits flexible so that you can react quickly to external changes. It takes a Definite Major Purpose, it requires your self-discipline and it requires your own initiative. The force of habit will then automatically carry you to your heart’s desire.

Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite

by Napoleon Hill

Based on a series of booklets written by bestselling motivational writer Napoleon Hill, Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite outlines the importance of three essential principles of success: self-discipline, learning from defeat, and the Golden Rule applied.

In 1908, Napoleon Hill met industrialist Andrew Carnegie for what he believed would be a short interview for an article. Instead, Carnegie spent hours detailing his principles of success to the young magazine reporter. He then challenged Hill to devote 20 years to collating a proven formula that would propel people of all backgrounds to happiness, harmony, and prosperity. Hill accepted the challenge, which he distilled in the perennial bestseller Think and Grow Rich.

Now, more than a century later, the Napoleon Hill Foundation is releasing this epic conversation to remind people that there are simple solutions to the problems troubling us most, everything from relationships and education to homelessness and even democracy. This is revealed in three major principles: self-discipline, which shows how the six departments of the mind may be organized and directed to any end; learning from defeat, which describes how defeat can be made to yield “the seed of an equivalent benefit” and how to turn it into a stepping-stone to greater achievement; and the Golden Rule applied for developing rewarding relationships, peace of mind, and a strengthened consciousness.

Each chapter draws on Carnegie’s words and advice as inspiration, with annotations by Napoleon Hill scholar James Whittaker explaining why they are essential for reaching your goals and prospering—for you, your family, and your community.
