The Next Distance Learning Class begins on February 15, 2021.
Sign up today!

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

“I am a graduate of my Grandfather’s philosophy. I studied Napoleon Hill for years, reading Think and Grow Rich now eight times. I even used his philosophy to change my life —twice! In spite of this, the course pulled the philosophy all together for me and gave me a deeper understanding!”

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

In regard to the Master Mind group, let’s start by talking about what is not. It is not a group of people getting together, drinking beer, and discussing what they are going to accomplish in life.

Napoleon Hill mentions the case of Andrew Carnegie. He came over to this country as a young boy with only part of a grade-school education. Yet he formed U.S. Steel: it was the largest steel company, because he consolidated all of the others into it. People thought he bought them up to control the prices, but he actually cut prices tremendously. He basically led the Age of Steel, because he made steel in such a way that it could be used in many places. Carnegie used the Master Mind by assembling the chemists, the lawyers, the accountants, and all the other people necessary to put his enterprise together.

The Master Mind is defined as two or more minds acting in perfect harmony for a common goal. You can have meetings, advisors, or what have you. Each one in the group may have their own idea—one wants to open a grocery store, another wants to build something. They can learn from one another, but according to Napoleon Hill, this is not a Master Mind. One essential characteristic of a Master Mind group is harmony, and the other is that they have a common problem they’re trying to solve. That makes all the difference in the world.

The mastermind principle is the secret to amassing power. Like persistence, power might seem like a hazy concept — too abstract to be attained through concrete steps. However, power is simply organized effort/knowledge. That is why this chapter should be read and re-read in conjunction on organized planning: power is the force generated by the organization of knowledge into concrete plans that enables these plans to be translated into impactful action. The mastermind facilitates the coordination and expression of effort and knowledge (through organization and action) so that individuals can achieve greater power than they could on their own.

Before knowledge is organized, it must be attained. No individual has all the knowledge they need to amass great riches by themselves. The three main sources of knowledge are as follows:

• Infinite Intelligence
• Collective knowledge
• Experimentation

Infinite Intelligence
Inspiration is the flash of knowledge that comes directly from the guiding power of the universe working in conjunction with the creative imagination, what Hill calls the sixth sense. The mind channels inspiration through the creative faculties when you condition it to vibrate at a higher plane. This higher-order thinking can be activated by positive emotions and mental stimulants. The power of Infinite Intelligence can be more readily accessed by coordinating one’s efforts in a spirit of harmony with other like-minded individuals. Out of the three main sources of knowledge, this is the only foolproof one; the others are subject to the whims and errors of the human experience.

Collective Knowledge
This entails all the knowledge gained through humanity’s collective experience, which can be accessed by studying humankind’s records: history books, archival materials, memoirs, etc. This knowledge is conferred in schools and pursued through individual research.

Experimentation and Research
When knowledge has not been previously discovered, it must be searched out. As such, the third main source of knowledge is experimentation (scientific study, invention, and trial and error) and ethnographic research (surveys, assessments, etc.). Oftentimes the creative imagination plays a role here too, as a flash of inspiration might be required to accomplish one’s research aims.

Courting Riches

There exists a great unseen stream of POWER, which may be compared to a river; except that one side flows in one direction, carrying all who get into that side of the stream, onward and upward to WEALTH—and the other side flows in the opposite direction, carrying all who are unfortunate enough to get into it (and not able to extricate themselves from it), downward to misery and POVERTY.

The mastermind principle brings two primary benefits:
• Economic advantages
• Psychic advantages

Economic Advantages
A mastermind group will produce economic advantages through the coordination of its members’ effort. Individuals can form alliances, provide networking opportunities, supplement each other’s knowledge, and combine efforts in other ways so as to increase one’s power and momentum toward translating desire into material riches.

Psychic Advantages
When individuals join forces toward a specific end, working in a spirit of complete harmony, they create what Hill calls a “third mind”: their spiritual energy is so greatly magnified that an affinity is constructed—a force that increases the energy of every member of the group and provides greater access to Infinite Intelligence. The stream of power flows in two directions: upstream, toward wealth (in all its forms); and downstream, toward misery and poverty. The power of thought directs the course one will take: positive thoughts and emotions will carry you upstream, and negative thoughts and emotions will propel you downstream. Some individuals flip-flop back and forth between the two streams, never making any real progress in either direction. You have the opportunity to grab the oar right now, by acting on the principles of success detailed in this book, and utilize the driving force of organized knowledge/ effort to convert the energy of desire into physical reality. You simply need: definiteness of purpose, intense desire, well-conceived and thoughtfully implemented plans, and the support of your mastermind group. These elements combined will attract opportunity, riches, and other positive manifestations of well-being into your life. You have to court riches like a desired romantic partner, attracting them through thought and action; poverty, on the other hand, comes to anyone.

Action Item: Form Your Mastermind
First, write a list of all the strengths and expertise you currently possess on your own. Next, create a table with two columns. In the left-hand column, use your list of strengths to identify all the gaps of knowledge, missing networking opportunities, and other weaknesses you have that stand in your way of achieving your definite chief aim. In the column on the right, identify at least one individual who excels in each area in which you are lacking.

Cross off anyone on the list who will not work with you in a complete spirit of harmony, who accepts temporary defeat as final, or who could negatively affect your faith or self-confidence in any way. Invite the remaining people on the list to join your mastermind group. Schedule two meetings with them this very week in order to begin organizing knowledge and creating and refining plans for translating desire into riches.

Multidimensional
by Jim Stovall

If I were to ask you to give me the main trait, characteristic, or ability that comes to your mind when someone mentions a racehorse, you would probably think of words such as fast, speedy, or quick. If I were to ask you the same question about a grizzly bear, you might say ferocious, frightening, or deadly. While these are accurate descriptions, it might surprise you to know that a grizzly bear can outrun a racehorse. Many times, we want to do the things we do best all of the time. My late, great friend and legendary basketball coach John Wooden told me that college basketball players invariably want to dunk the ball and shoot three-point shots. Rarely do they want to practice defense or passing. Defense and passing win championships; therefore, in order to be happy and successful, we often need to become multidimensional.

If I were to ask you to visualize Tiger Woods, you would likely picture him hitting one of those towering, unbelievably long drives from the tee of a par 5 hole. Only the most avid golf fans know and appreciate the fact that, in addition to those gigantic drives, Tiger Woods has one of the highest ranked and most efficient ratings for his play out of sand traps and his putting on the green. A one-dimensional game may get you onto someone’s highlight reel, but it will rarely win you championships or help you to succeed in your personal and professional life.

You may get noticed for doing one dimension of a task extremely well. You will be remembered for performing an entire job or skill at a level that makes you successful. Make a list of all of the tasks it takes for you to be successful in your current job, career, or business. Realize that each of these tasks are critical to your overall success. Don’t overlook any roles within your operation.

Remember, good impressions are made or lost most often based on how your telephone is answered. If this task is done in a mediocre fashion, it will take someone on your team a tremendous amount of effort and energy to overcome that first impression. On the other hand, if your telephone is answered promptly and professionally, the stage is set for your eventual success.

Once you have a list of all the tasks required to be successful, determine which ones you will do yourself and which ones you will delegate. Delegation should not always be determined solely based upon who does the job best. A great trial lawyer might be able to answer the phone at his law firm switchboard better than anybody else; however, if the operator and receptionist can do the job 99 percent as well, the efficiencies become obvious. In order to succeed, you must have the right person at the right place at the right time doing the right thing for the right reason.

When you start out in life or in business, it may seem as though you are doing everything yourself, and, in reality, you may be; however, there will come a day when you will discover new dimensions of your own talent and have people on your team whose talents will complement and not compete with yours.

As you go through your day today, consider yourself as the coach who is assessing everyone’s strengths and weaknesses so you can set the stage for your victory.

Today’s the day!

Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite

by Napoleon Hill

Based on a series of booklets written by bestselling motivational writer Napoleon Hill, Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite outlines the importance of three essential principles of success: self-discipline, learning from defeat, and the Golden Rule applied.

In 1908, Napoleon Hill met industrialist Andrew Carnegie for what he believed would be a short interview for an article. Instead, Carnegie spent hours detailing his principles of success to the young magazine reporter. He then challenged Hill to devote 20 years to collating a proven formula that would propel people of all backgrounds to happiness, harmony, and prosperity. Hill accepted the challenge, which he distilled in the perennial bestseller Think and Grow Rich.

Now, more than a century later, the Napoleon Hill Foundation is releasing this epic conversation to remind people that there are simple solutions to the problems troubling us most, everything from relationships and education to homelessness and even democracy. This is revealed in three major principles: self-discipline, which shows how the six departments of the mind may be organized and directed to any end; learning from defeat, which describes how defeat can be made to yield “the seed of an equivalent benefit” and how to turn it into a stepping-stone to greater achievement; and the Golden Rule applied for developing rewarding relationships, peace of mind, and a strengthened consciousness.

Each chapter draws on Carnegie’s words and advice as inspiration, with annotations by Napoleon Hill scholar James Whittaker explaining why they are essential for reaching your goals and prospering—for you, your family, and your community.
