Positive Mental Attitude:
A System of Success

Sign up today!

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

“I am a graduate of my Grandfather’s philosophy. I studied Napoleon Hill for years, reading Think and Grow Rich now eight times. I even used his philosophy to change my life —twice! In spite of this, the course pulled the philosophy all together for me and gave me a deeper understanding!”

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

There is an untapped reservoir that we all have called the brain. Napoleon Hill and scientists say that we have not yet realized the greatest powers this organ contains. As an example of this, Napoleon Hill liked to share the story of Mr. Milo C. Jones. Mr. Jones, having been struck with paralysis, came up with a creative plan that he otherwise would not have thought of as a healthy functioning man. Hill wrote:

Calling his family around him, he said, “I want you to plant every acre of our land in corn. Start raising hogs on this corn, and while they are still young and tender, slaughter them and make them into ‘Little Pig Sausage.’”

“Little Pig Sausage” became a household word all over America, and Milo C. Jones lived to see his brainchild make him a very rich man. Although he learned very late, he made the discovery that I trust each of you young people will make early in your career: he discovered that there are no limitations to the power of the mind except those which one sets up for himself through doubts, fears, and lack of ambition or definiteness of purpose.

Napoleon Hill shares with us that our brain is not only creative in times of adversity but it is also an amazing broadcasting and receiving station that communicates with men and infinite intelligence.

I wish you the best,

MORE than twenty years ago, the author, working in conjunction with the late Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, and Dr. Elmer R. Gates, observed that every human brain is both a broadcasting and receiving station for the vibration of thought.

Through the medium of the ether, in a fashion similar to that employed by the radio broadcasting principle, every human brain is capable of picking up vibrations of thought which are being released by other brains.

In connection with the statement in the preceding paragraph, compare, and consider the description of the Creative Imagination, as outlined in the chapter on Imagination. The Creative Imagination is the “receiving set” of the brain, which receives thoughts, released by the brains of others. It is the agency of communication between one’s conscious, or reasoning mind, and the four sources from which one may receive thought stimuli.

When stimulated, or “stepped up” to a high rate of vibration, the mind becomes more receptive to the vibration of thought which reaches it through the ether from outside sources. This “stepping up” process takes place through the positive emotions, or the negative emotions. Through the emotions, the vibrations of thought may be increased.

Vibrations of an exceedingly high rate are the only vibrations picked up and carried, by the ether, from one brain to another. Thought is energy travelling at an exceedingly high rate of vibration. Thought, which has been modified or “stepped up” by any of the major emotions, vibrates at a much higher rate than ordinary thought, and it is this type of thought which passes from one brain to another, through the broadcasting machinery of the human brain.

The emotion of sex stands at the head of the list of human emotions, as far as intensity and driving force are concerned. The brain which has been stimulated by the emotion of sex, vibrates at a much more rapid rate than it does when that emotion is quiescent or absent.

The result of sex transmutation, is the increase of the rate of vibration of thoughts to such a pitch that the Creative Imagination becomes highly receptive to ideas, which it picks up from the ether. On the other hand, when the brain is vibrating at a rapid rate, it not only attracts thoughts and ideas released by other brains through the medium of the ether, but it gives to one’s own thoughts that “feeling” which is essential before those thoughts will be picked up and acted upon by one’s subconscious mind.

Thus, you will see that the broadcasting principle is the factor through which you mix feeling, or emotion with your thoughts and pass them on to your subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind is the “sending station” of the brain, through which vibrations of thought are broadcast. The Creative Imagination is the “receiving set,” through which the vibrations of thought are picked up from the ether.

Along with the important factors of the subconscious mind, and the faculty of the Creative Imagination, which constitute the sending and receiving sets of your mental broadcasting machinery, consider now the principle of auto-suggestion, which is the medium by which you may put into operation your “broadcasting” station.

Through the instructions described in the chapter on auto-suggestion, you were definitely informed of the method by which DESIRE may be transmuted into its monetary equivalent.

Operation of your mental “broadcasting” station is a comparatively simple procedure. You have but three principles to bear in mind, and to apply, when you wish to use your broadcasting station—the SUBCONSCIOUS MIND, CREATIVE IMAGINATION, and AUTO-SUGGESTION. The stimuli through which you put these three principles into action have been described—the procedure begins with DESIRE.

THE GREATEST FORCES ARE “INTANGIBLE”

The depression brought the world to the very border-line of understanding of the forces which are intangible and unseen. Through the ages which have passed, man has depended too much upon his physical senses, and has limited his knowledge to physical things, which he could see, touch, weigh, and measure.

We are now entering the most marvelous of all ages—an age which will teach us something of the intangible forces of the world about us. Perhaps we shall learn, as we pass through this age, that the “other self” is more powerful than the physical self we see when we look into a mirror.

Sometimes men speak lightly of the intangibles— the things which they cannot perceive through any of their five senses, and when we hear them, it should remind us that all of us are controlled by forces which are unseen and intangible.

The whole of mankind has not the power to cope with, nor to control the intangible force wrapped up in the rolling waves of the oceans. Man has not the capacity to understand the intangible force of gravity, which keeps this little earth suspended in mid-air, and keeps man from falling from it, much less the power to control that force. Man is entirely subservient to the intangible force which comes with a thunderstorm, and he is just as helpless in the presence of the intangible force of electricity—nay, he does not even know what electricity is, where it comes from, or what is its purpose!

Nor is this by any means the end of man’s ignorance in connection with things unseen and intangible. He does not understand the intangible force (and intelligence) wrapped up in the soil of the earth—the force which provides him with every morsel of food he eats, every article of clothing he wears, every dollar he carries in his pockets.

My Own Journey
Jim Stovall

As I dictate these words that you are reading in a print or electronic book, or possibly listening to in an audiobook, I’m struck by the fact that the life I live today would have been unimaginable to me prior to being introduced to Napoleon Hill through his book Think and Grow Rich. As a successful athlete aspiring to make my living in pro sports, I had never studied or even thought about principles of success or my future beyond the field of competition. Then during a routine physical to play another season of football, I was diagnosed with a condition that would cause me to lose my sight.

By age 29, I was totally blind, and I fell into hopelessness, despair, and depression. I had never even met a blind person, and I didn’t have a clue what I was going to do with the rest of my life. The only plan I could formulate on that fateful day more than three decades ago involved moving into a little nine-by-twelve-foot room in the back of my house where I gathered my radio, telephone, and tape recorder. That was my whole world thirty years ago.

I really fully intended never to leave that room again. The thought of traveling millions of miles and speaking to millions of people in arena events, or running an Emmy Award-winning television network, or writing more than forty books and having eight of them turned into movies, or any of the other wonderful elements that make up my lifestyle today would have seemed as foreign to me as going to the moon. Then, in an unexpected way and through an unlikely individual, I was introduced to Napoleon Hill.

Dear Napoleon,

I had never heard of you or your work until my senior year of college. As a blind person, I realized my job prospects were limited, so I told my parents instead of a traditional career working for someone else, I was going to start my own business. They introduced me to an elderly gentleman named Lee Braxton who, in turn, introduced me to your philosophy and changed my world. Your admonition, “Remember, every defeat, every disappointment, and every adversity carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit,” was like a ray of light to a blind young man.

Lee Braxton had a third-grade education but made millions of dollars during the Great Depression. He gave away much of his wealth and worked for a university for a dollar per year for the rest of his life. Although he had gone to school only long enough to learn to read, he epitomized my belief that we learn to read so that we can spend our lives reading to learn. At his death, he had a private library in his home that contained in excess of ten thousand volumes.

He made me read your book Think and Grow Rich three times before he began mentoring me. That book became the basis for everything he taught me and my own success. Years later—long after Mr. Braxton had passed away—I wrote a book entitled The Millionaire Map recounting my journey from poverty to prosperity and highlighting the influence of Mr. Braxton and you. Don Green, the head of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, read my book and contacted me, describing a connection that still astounds me to this day. Don said, “Jim, do you realize your mentor, Lee Braxton, was one of Napoleon Hill’s best friends? Mr. Braxton gave the eulogy at Dr. Hill’s funeral.” Don Green shared with me the transcript of Mr. Braxton’s eulogy as well as a great deal of correspondence between you and Mr. Braxton throughout the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.

Without my parents’ introduction to Mr. Braxton and his introduction to Think and Grow Rich, I shudder to think where I would be today. I remain eternally grateful for the inspiration, wisdom, and divine connection that goes back to a time before I was born.

Master-Key to Riches

Self-Confidence Formula

by Napoleon Hill

Your formula to build a strong sense of self-worth so that you can better recognize opportunity, take action on your dreams, and enhance your resilience.

A lack of self-confidence is one of the greatest maladies of today’s world, one that is responsible for the rampant helplessness, lack of self-control, aimlessness, procrastination, and despair that characterize modern society. But as the venerable steel magnate Andrew Carnegie emphasized to Hill, “Confidence is a state of mind, necessary to succeed, and the starting point of developing self-confidence is definiteness of purpose.”

The time for self-doubt and self-criticism is over. Your faith in yourself and your abilities determines whether you fail or succeed. Napoleon Hill’s Self-Confidence Formula enables you to boost your self-confidence through the application of Hill’s strategies for controlling your thoughts. By implementing these principles, you will not only be able to operate at a higher plane of thought and action—attracting more opportunities, gaining influence, and strengthening relationships—but you will also be able to instill this critical quality in others.

Napoleon Hill’s Self-Confidence Formula gives you the keys to success and fulfillment by equipping you to:

• unlearn fears, insecurities, and limitations acquired in childhood and adolescence
• condition your mind to believe in the certainty of your success
• take bold, confident action on your definite chief aim
• conquer your inferiority complex through the mastermind principle
• build the self-reliance and self-esteem of today’s youth

You are now on the journey to confident, purposeful living. As you implement Hill’s principles, you will cultivate a state of mind primed to accept the abundance reserved for you.
