Positive Mental Attitude:
A System of Success

Sign up today!

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

“I am a graduate of my Grandfather’s philosophy. I studied Napoleon Hill for years, reading Think and Grow Rich now eight times. I even used his philosophy to change my life —twice! In spite of this, the course pulled the philosophy all together for me and gave me a deeper understanding!”

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

When Napoleon Hill was asked to deliver the baccalaureate sermon on June 2, 1957, at Salem College, it had been thirty-five years since he had delivered a commencement address to the 1922 graduating class at the same college. In The Alumni Echoes, the school paper of Salem College, the headline read “Convocation Set Today.”

Today I am sharing with you what the Salem College school paper had to say about Napoleon.

Much had happened in the life of Hill since 1922 when he addressed the twenty-five graduates including Jennings Randolph, who was to represent West Virginia in Congress. Mr. Randolph served for many years in the US Congress and became a friend to Hill and later served as trustee in the board of the Napoleon Hill Foundation.

At the 1957 address, Hill was awarded an honorary doctorate in literature. I hope you enjoy this interesting article from the College paper. If you want to read the full speech that was given by Napoleon Hill that day you can find it in my book Napoleon Hill my Mentor.

I wish you the best,

(article from The Salem College school newspaper)

Napoleon Hill, philosopher, author, and educator who has taught more people how to achieve financial and spiritual success in life than any other living person, will deliver the baccalaureate address at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, in the Salem College auditorium.

During a personally exciting life, he developed the “science of success,” an exact study which laid down the principles by which anyone can realize his material goals no matter what ambitions they may be.

Mr. Hill has, moreover, been the confidant and adviser to presidents, industrialists, and government leaders including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Andrew Carnegie, and Henry Ford. In fact, it was Carnegie who first started him on the research that resulted in Mr. Hill’s development of the “seventeen principles of success.”

Literally millions of persons credit Mr. Hill with inspiring them to greater heights of fortune in life than they ever believed possible. More than that, he has furnished them with practical step-by-step methods for realizing their ambitions.

“What the human mind can conceive and believe, the human mind can achieve” is the core of Mr. Hill’s philosophy.

“You can,” he says, “be anything you want to be, if only you believe with sufficient conviction—and act in accordance with your faith.”

It is estimated that sixty million people throughout the world have read and benefited from his most notable book, Think and Grow Rich, since it was published in 1937.

Napoleon Hill was born in Wise County, Virginia, on October 26, 1883, amidst “moonshiners, mountain stills, illiteracy, and deadly feuds.” Although born in poverty, it was said he was given the unusual name of Napoleon in honor of his rich paternal great uncle.

With a view toward financing his further education, Mr. Hill launched a new project at the age of twenty-five. He began writing biographical articles about successful people for Senator Bob Taylor of Tennessee, publisher of an important periodical of the day.

Rep. Jennings Randolph, who credited Hill with helping him to achieve his own success as an executive of Capital Airlines, introduced Mr. Hill in 1933 to Franklin D. Roosevelt, and as a result, Hill became a presidential advisor. It was he who gave FDR the idea for his famous speech—“We have nothing to fear but fear itself”—which helped halt financial hysteria at the pit of the Depression.

Mr. Hill was interested in and helpful to Salem College long years ago and delivered the commencement address in 1922. He is the publisher of Success Unlimited magazine. He is also the author of many books on personal improvement, including Think and Grow Rich, which has sold more than sixty million copies and has been reprinted in the languages of other countries. One of his more recent volumes was How to Raise Your Own Salary.

Hill is married and has three adult sons. He and his wife live quietly in Glendale, California.

Remembering Dr. William Wright

“To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

This quotation sums up Dr. William Wright’s life for those of us who knew him. He served in many capacities, but in each role he modeled what he believed. I knew Dr. Wright as a friend, teacher, advisor, boss, and confidant. For over thirty years I benefited from his enthusiasm, advice, and friendship. When our roles reversed, and I became his supervisor as he worked as a teacher for the Napoleon Hill Foundation, I admired him for his willingness to make a difference and to accept a position that at first he declined. But, let’s back up a bit.

I began working for Dr. Wright when he asked me to teach Positive Mental Attitude Classes at Purdue Calumet. I was reluctant at first because I did not feel that I knew enough, or possessed enough PMA myself to do the job. One instance stands out in my mind as “pure” Dr. Wright. On this occasion he needed an instructor for Westville Correctional Center, and he asked me to teach the class. I declined because I was “too busy” being a high school principal at Westville. He persisted and stated that I could do it because it would be on my way home and I just needed to take a short detour after work. I accepted the assignment. Afterwards, I went on to teach many more classes for Dr. Wright and taught the principles of success to multiple audiences. When our roles reversed, he told me that he would do anything that I needed to be done for the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center, except teach the distance learning course. Well, guess what? He did teach the course and continued on for many semesters having students from all over the world who yet today still use his teachings.

Dr. Wright and Rose attended the Malaysian international convention where he was presented the Educator of the Year award for his work teaching those students, nationally and internationally, who were seeking Leader Certification through the Foundation. This is just one example of his willingness to be of service, but it is a strong one because it demonstrates his love of education coupled with his desire to be a teacher who made a difference in the lives of others.

Dr. Wright showed up and this is said to be one of the characteristics of ultimate success – showing up. Frequently, we would have international guests and at one point in time Christina Chia arrived from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and was expected to stay with me, but I needed an extra day to prepare a space for her. Who shows up? Dr. Wright and Rose. They offered her lodgings. Christina emailed me when she heard of Dr. Wright’s passing and asked me to tell Rose that she still remembers their hospitality. Yes, Dr. Wright’s capacity to be of service is truly unforgettable.

On another occasion, I remember soliciting Dr. Wright to pick up my daughter Cathleen from Andrean. This was when he worked at the Georgia St. Learning Center (adjacent to Hooters) and I could not make it in time. Disregarding the fact that my daughter did not know Dr. Wright except by name, and had never met him, he soldiered on and got in the school’s pickup line and when he recognized her by her red hair he told her that her mother sent him, and to get in the car. And, of course she did! We still laugh about that one. I guess years back security was not as tight. Dr. Wright did have a commanding presence.

Dr. Wright and Rose liked entertaining at their home, and I, Uriel Martinez, Alan and Jing Chen and their twins Angie and Andy were hosted by Rose and Bill. Alan remembers taking the twins over for trick or treating and having Bill and Rose take photos and give out treats to his young family. Dr. Wright stressed the importance of celebrating the good times.

Always to herald in the season of Lent on Fat Tuesday Dr. Wright would bring Paczkis to work and make sure we all had our share in the office. And, supportive he was. He and Rose accompanied us to Wise, Virginia and to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as a very present support. And, even after his retirement from Purdue, Dr. Wright remained the sole survivor of the original trio of Dr. Sefler, Dan Yovich, and himself in bringing the Napoleon Hill Foundation to campus and thereby changing lives around the world.

Did it all make a difference? You bet it did. There were many starfish in Dr. Wright’s life. You know the ones that get thrown back into the water to survive? Well, he continued to give his friends and family multiple chances to grow and to learn to go the distance. I know from testimonials that I have heard and read that it did make a difference for those of us he mentored. Read the many guest book messages to understand the ripples that Dr. Wright created in all our lives.

A loving wife is also part of the package. Several years ago Rose wrote that it is “Better to Give than Receive.” She states: “All my life I have done whatever it took to help people in any way that my God-given talents would allow me to do. Whether it was helping students be as successful in my classroom as they possibly could, or helping my children develop into honest, loving, and independent individuals, my life has been devoted to being a caring and sharing spouse and lending a helping hand to my friends or whomever I could. Going the extra mile helped me achieve the best I could be. My choice of career permitted me to use my education and talents enriching the lives of many students. was blessed with a talented, interesting, and loving husband and two challenging, capable sons who have contributed to the enrichment of my life.” Rose’s words! How better to acknowledge Bill’s wisdom than in crediting him with choosing the best wife who supported him always.

Throughout his 84 years of life, Dr. Wright gave each of us many gifts. Every time he took time to meet with us personally was a gift. His intention to serve in whatever capacity he was called to do, was a gift. His life was an intentional gift to all of us who knew and loved him, and his gift to the world will continue to radiate out through us as we model his behaviour and transform not only our own lives but the lives of others as well. He truly believed in Napoleon Hill’s words that: “Happiness may be had only by helping others to find it.”

Thanks to you Dr. Wright, doors were opened, opportunities given, and risks taken. I for one want to say “thank you” for being that ever-present help when it was needed the most. We remember his life with gratitude, we celebrate his transformation into the next life, and we believe that he will be waiting for us when we join him as well.

Now, as we bow our heads and quiet our minds and remember Dr. Wright, let us ask for the blessing that eternal rest be granted to him until we meet again.

Master-Key to Riches

Self-Confidence Formula

by Napoleon Hill

Your formula to build a strong sense of self-worth so that you can better recognize opportunity, take action on your dreams, and enhance your resilience.

A lack of self-confidence is one of the greatest maladies of today’s world, one that is responsible for the rampant helplessness, lack of self-control, aimlessness, procrastination, and despair that characterize modern society. But as the venerable steel magnate Andrew Carnegie emphasized to Hill, “Confidence is a state of mind, necessary to succeed, and the starting point of developing self-confidence is definiteness of purpose.”

The time for self-doubt and self-criticism is over. Your faith in yourself and your abilities determines whether you fail or succeed. Napoleon Hill’s Self-Confidence Formula enables you to boost your self-confidence through the application of Hill’s strategies for controlling your thoughts. By implementing these principles, you will not only be able to operate at a higher plane of thought and action—attracting more opportunities, gaining influence, and strengthening relationships—but you will also be able to instill this critical quality in others.

Napoleon Hill’s Self-Confidence Formula gives you the keys to success and fulfillment by equipping you to:

• unlearn fears, insecurities, and limitations acquired in childhood and adolescence
• condition your mind to believe in the certainty of your success
• take bold, confident action on your definite chief aim
• conquer your inferiority complex through the mastermind principle
• build the self-reliance and self-esteem of today’s youth

You are now on the journey to confident, purposeful living. As you implement Hill’s principles, you will cultivate a state of mind primed to accept the abundance reserved for you.
