Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

The students for the Napoleon Hill Foundation’s certified instructor course are scheduled to visit the headquarters of the Foundation on May 24 – 17, 2018. For the past eighteen years, the Napoleon Hill Foundation offices have been located on the campus of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. For those of you who don’t know, Wise, Virginia is a little town located in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. This is the place where Napoleon Hill grew up and became the man who gave us the seventeen principles of success. I think our students are in for a treat because they will be experiencing the landscape and the people of this beautiful part of Virginia. We will be enjoying the typical kind of spring weather that no doubt a young high spirited Oliver Napoleon Hill played in at one time. This is the place where Napoleon Hill’s stepmother helped him find his purpose. Our students will be seeing Napoleon Hill’s philosophy from a new angle, from the mountains of Virginia.

As our guests, the leadership course students will be able to see the plaque that hangs at the entrance to my office. This sign was originally placed at the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center in Hammond, Indiana. It is a great memorial to the success and accomplishments that Napoleon Hill achieved during his lifetime.

While at the foundation in Wise the students will be able to see artifacts associated with Napoleon Hill’s life such as original manuscripts, honorary degrees, signed documents, and many other items of great interest. In addition, the students will receive personal instruction from myself and such notables as Dr. JB Hill who is Napoleon Hill’s grandson and knows more about Napoleon Hill than any other person I know. Other instructors include Satish Verma who is our licensee from Canada and U.S.A. Our distance learning instructor Uriel Martinez will teach and preside over our entire course. Other certified instructors include Rachel Carter, who is also the Director of Napoleon Hill Scholars, Alan Chen, and Jarett Schaffer. All will share their personal stories and professional expertise to expound Napoleon Hill’s success program.

The students will see the historical marker erected for Napoleon Hill. Dr. Hill is the only author in the state of Virginia to receive this award. Other sites of interest are the Rufus Ayers mansion, the church where the Hill family attended Sunday service, the little schoolhouse that Napoleon attended, and many other sites associated with Napoleon Hill’s life in the mountains of Virginia.

I wish you the best,
Don Green

The Law of Success

PUT YOURSELF IN A POSITION TO
EXTEND HELP TO MANY

by Napoleon Hill

The greatest woman I have ever known, my stepmother, spent a large portion of her later life suffering almost unbearable pain from arthritis; yet she put into motion an undertaking which has already benefited many millions of people and is destined to benefit yet untold millions, some of them as yet unborn. She was responsible for my early training which led eventually to my being commissioned by Andrew Carnegie to give the world its first practical philosophy of personal achievement.

Had my stepmother not been confined to a wheelchair, no one would have suspected she was in constant physical pain. Her voice was always pleasant and she conversed only in a positive trend of thought. She never complained, but always has a word of encouragement for all of us who lived close to her. I am sure that anyone who knew her, and understood the extent to which she had mastered physical pain, would have been utterly ashamed to have expressed fear of any form of dentistry or surgery. My stepmother’s mental attitude toward physical pain was one of the major factors which made her a truly great person, loved by all who knew her, envied by some because of her profound self-discipline.

Thus we see, once again, that one’s mental attitude toward physical pain is the determining factor which makes pain the master, or merely something to be transmuted into some form of beneficial service. Instead of thinking of her own physical pain and complaining about it, my stepmother directed her mind to help others–particularly members of our family; and in that way minimized the effects of her suffering. This might prove a beneficial suggestion for all who allow their minds to dwell upon their own troubles.

And it might be helpful too if those who have problems they believe are without solution were convinced that the best possible way to solve such problems is to look around until one finds another person with a similar or greater problem, and helps that person find the solution to his own problem. By this means the negative mind is transferred from oneself and is transmuted into a positive mind which is directed for the benefit of others, and the chances are a thousand to one that by the time the other fellow’s problem has been solved one will have found the solution to his own.

A positive mind is practically an irresistible power which one may direct to the attainment of any desired purpose, including of course the mastery of both mental and physical pain. Again may I remind you, a positive mind is also the first of the Twelve Great Riches of Life.

Comstock Gold
by Jim Stovall

Recently, I was reading a historical novel about the Gold rush in California and Nevada in the mid-1800s. It was fascinating to learn how people lived during that time and in that place. There is a multitude of lessons to be learned in observing any situation.

The early miners struck some promising looking veins of gold, and the Gold Rush was on. People came from around the world with nothing more than their hopes and dreams of gold. As the various mines developed, it became much more expensive and labor intensive to get the ore out of the ground. Many people who came halfway around the world expecting to get rich, only got a job working in someone else’s mine.

These West Coast mines were unique in that there was blue clay that continued to seep into each of the tunnels and mine shafts. They had to assign many workers to do nothing more than scoop up this clay and haul it out of the mine, creating large mountains of this waste blue clay material. This clay removal made the mining process more dangerous and more expensive.

They called in mining experts from around the world to determine how to stop this blue clay from creeping into the mine works. One deep mine expert arrived from Ireland and, as he was walking up the hill to the mine shaft, he noticed the enormous pile of blue clay. He casually commented, “That is the largest pile of silver ore I’ve ever seen.”

As the gold played out, the Comstock Lode became one of the richest deposits of silver the world has ever known. Many fortunes were built in just a few short years—not because of gold, but because of a waste byproduct they had overlooked.

Oftentimes, wisdom and genius come from simply observing your current situation from another angle.

Unless you and I are interested in silver mines, this may not have any direct application to our lives; however, it may be worth more than the silver or the gold if we will come to understand the significance. We must ask ourselves the golden question: What opportunities are we overlooking simply because we think we should be working in another direction? Success generally lies in recognizing and exploiting value before anyone else does. You may already have the key to everything you want in your hands. Step back and look at it from a different perspective. Don’t only think about what you see, but think about what other people might see. Oftentimes, wisdom and genius come from simply observing your current situation from another angle.

As you go through your day today, look past the gold and even the silver. You may already possess more than you think.

Today’s the day!

The Path to Personal Power

by Napoleon Hill

This true lost manuscript from the “grandfather of self-help,” Napoleon Hill provides timeless wisdom on how to attain a more successful and wealthy life using simple principles.

Napoleon Hill first wrote The Path to Personal Power in 1941, intending it as a handbook for people lifting themselves out of the Great Depression. But upon the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America’s entrance into World War II, these lessons were put aside and largely forgotten–until today.

Discovered in the archives of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, this never-before-published work is made up of three easily digested lessons, each its own chapter: Definiteness of Purpose; the Master Mind; and Going the Extra Mile.

This concise book is a powerful road map that leads to a single discovery–you already have the power to attain whatever wealth, success, and prosperity you desire in life. All you need to do is walk the path without straying, and the rest will follow.

Using these lessons, you have principles to live by that will help you stay on your own personal path to power, and achieve success that you never thought possible.
