The Napoleon Hill Foundation
Making the world a better place in which to live.

Dear Readers,

To overcome obstacles and hardships, steadiness in one’s progress and a determination to succeed must always be present. Remember what writer Elbert Hubbard said, “The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing that you will make one.”

If you give up easily, become disenchanted when your goals are blocked, and think that you must wait until all conditions are favorable and your progress appears easy, you will be very unlikely to go far in today’s fast-paced world. Circumstances will probably never be such that success is assured, and there will never be a time when all conditions are ideal, and the reason most people never succeed is that they wait for perfect circumstances.

Obstacles are not there to block one’s path, but to be used as stepping-stones on the path of life.

Also, the very struggle to overcome the obstacles that hinder your progress will serve to make you stronger while you pursue your goals. As the writer John Neal so aptly stated, “A certain amount of opposition is a great help to a man. Kites rise against, not with, the wind.”

That Old Witch—Bad Luck

What is the thought that is in your mind?
Is fear ever running through it?
If so, just tackle the next you find
By thinking you’re going to do it.

—EDGAR A. GUEST

If you face misfortune and so-called bad luck, and you always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, then you fall into the company of many other people.

If this is where you find yourself, you need to learn fast that you are the cause of all the trouble that is besetting you.

Fear is simply a result of creative thought, but while creative thought is useful, it is useful only in the positive form. Negative creative thinking creates fear.

In the Bible, we read of Job, who stated, “The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me.”

Panic and fear do not develop unless our thought processes are negative.

In this excerpt from Napoleon Hill’s Greatest Speeches he instructs us to have faith and not fear.  He tells us you can easily think of positive thoughts as easily as negative thoughts come to you.  This requires proactive approach which can turn your darkness into light!

I wish you the best,

My source of power is as free as the air I breathe. To avail myself of it at will I need only faith, and this I have in abundance. The whole world ought to know by this time that faith is the starting point of every constructive effort of mankind and that fear is the beginning of most of man’s destructive efforts.

Faith permits one to approach within communicating distance of Infinite Intelligence (or God, if you prefer that name). Fear holds one at arm’s length and makes communication impossible.

Faith creates an Abraham Lincoln; fear develops an Al Capone.

Faith evolves a great leader; fear creates a cringing follower.

Faith makes men honorable at trade; fear makes men dis-honest and stealthy-minded.

Faith causes one to look for and to find the best there is in men; fear discovers only their shortcomings and deficiencies.

Faith unmistakably identifies itself through the look in one’s eyes, the expression on one’s face, the tone of one’s voice, and the way one walks; fear identifies itself through the same avenues.

Faith attracts only that which is helpful and constructive; fear attracts only that which is destructive.

Right works through faith; wrong works through fear.

Anything that causes one to be afraid should have close examination.

Both faith and fear have a tendency to clothe themselves in physical realities, through the most practical and natural media available.

Faith constructs; fear tears down. The order never is reversed!

Faith and fear never fraternize. Both cannot occupy the mind at the same time. One or the other must, and always does, dominate.

Faith can lift an individual to great heights of achievement in any calling; fear can and does make achievement impossible in any calling.

Fear ushered in the worst panic the world has ever known; faith will usher it out again.

Faith is nature’s alchemy with which she mixes and blends the spiritual with the physical and mental forces.

Fear will no more mix with spiritual force than will oil with water.

Faith is every man’s privilege. When exercised, it removes most of the real and all of the imagined limitations with which man binds himself in his own mind.

The fact that most men of science are free from all forms of fear, while those who know but little or nothing of science and natural law are steeped in it, is most significant.

Napoleon’s presence on the battlefield is said to have been worth that of ten thousand soldiers because he inspired those around him with the spirit of faith in their ability to gain victory in warfare. What a lesson this is for business and industrial leaders.

When you no longer have faith you may as well write “finish” across your record because you will be through, no matter who you are or what you may be undertaking.

“For verily I say unto you, if you have faith as a grain of a mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, ‘Remove hence to yonder place,’ and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” The business depression has, without doubt, tried the very souls of millions of people, but these same millions have learned through their trials that success cannot be achieved through fear.

When Lightning Strikes

It was an ordinary day in 1999. I went to my office, went about my daily tasks, and all seemed right—or at least normal— in the world. One of the tasks on my calendar involved writing a book and getting the manuscript off to the publisher.

I had written six books previously, but they had all been nonfiction. As those six volumes had taken up most everything I knew and lots of things I merely suspected, it was time to take a different approach on book number seven.

I sat down to begin dictating a novel. Since I had no knowledge or experience in writing novels, there wasn’t much cluttering up my mind. The only advice I gave myself was the advice I had heard as far back as I could remember growing up as a child in my parents’ home. “Whatever you decide to do, do your best.” This is important advice, and it’s easy to miss the critical point.

Obviously, you want to do your best. Where a lot of us fall down is in deciding to do the right thing. I have spoken in arenas for years to many thousands of sales people and business leaders. They deal with countless people each day. Many of those encounters are not important, while a few of them are critical; and every once in a while, the lightning will strike. Unfortunately, you and I never know when the lightning is going to strike, so all we can do is our best at everything we decide to do.

You never know when a chance meeting is going to turn into a million-dollar opportunity or a lifelong personal transformation. You never know when that single call, letter, or email is going to be the one that makes the connection of your life. And—for those of us who from time to time through art, music, the spoken word, or our writing get to briefly be creative— it’s simply impossible to tell when the lightning is going to strike and the whole world will change.

That first novel I sat down to do my best on in 1999 was written in five short days and published just as I dictated it, word for word. The Ultimate Gift has become a worldwide phenomenon selling over 3 million books and was released as a major motion picture starring James Garner, Lee Meriwether, and Brian Dennehy.

Think of the times in your life when the lightning struck and you and those around you were forever changed. If you will but focus on the possibilities, you will never do anything less than your very best.

As you go through your day today, do the best you can at everything you decide to do, and trust that the lightning will strike when and where it is supposed to.

Today’s the day!

Jim Stovall
