Wishes Won’t
Bring Riches

The Mental Dynamite Series

In this lost classic, the pioneering motivational coach teaches how to make the crucial leap from faith to action in bringing your dreams to life.

Believe in yourself…Have faith. We often hear these expressions. But faith is not enough. We need Applied Faith. In three hard-hitting chapters, motivational master Napoleon Hill teaches you how to transform belief into action, and faith into real-life plans.

Application. Enthusiasm. Action. These are the three keys required to do more than just “believe in yourself” – but to actually BE the person you want to be.

Wishes Won’t Bring Riches provides you with the missing link necessary to go from visualizing your dreams to living them.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

BOOKS CAN OPEN the door and show you a world of new ideas. In many cases, books can also change your thoughts and your outlook on life. Books contain countless stories of young people who overcame adversities and reached the top—examples that you can relate to that will no doubt thrill you and inspire you to learn from others, obtain the best education possible, and make something worthwhile of yourself.

As you read inspirational stories, self-help books, biographies, and autobiographies, you will probably hear a voice within you telling you that you, too, can succeed. By reading about the success of others and applying visualization, you can see the possibilities to become great, just as others became great, that are present in your own life—even if it appeared that those others had very little opportunity to succeed.

A book can awaken the genius that lies within and allows someone to do wonderful things, even though at the beginning of that person’s life, it appeared that he was not destined to do great deeds.

Books can not only awaken you to a knowledge of your possibilities but create what Dr. Napoleon Hill and other writers have called a burning desire to accomplish the type of great deeds that most people will only dream about. Books can arouse you and others to express the best that is within them rather than being content with lesser accomplishments.

In William M. Thayer’s popular book From Log-Cabin to the White House: Life of James A. Garfield, written in 1881, the reader was told that the lives of great men are an inspiration to the young. These great men have within themselves perseverance, honesty, and other virtues necessary for success. The qualities of successful men are simple truths that successful men have demonstrated by their deeds.

What better way could there be for the inquiring young mind to learn success than studying men and women who became successful by the choices that they made and the actions that they performed?

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “There is properly no history; only biography.” If Emerson’s statement is true, reading and learning from those who have succeeded is a profitable adventure. Learning about successful men and women from business, art, medicine, education, or other fields that benefit humanity will excite the reader to become successful as well.

The real reason to read about successful men and women is to learn how they achieved their success. These biographies are all true lessons in life from which the reader can glean life-changing ideas and examples.

However, books do not give us only stories or examples that tell us what to do. As in the Bible (or in classics such as Aesop’s Fables), the reader can find two completely different types of stories. You should absorb not only those stories that are used as positive examples, but also those stories that are used as negative examples or warnings. Basically, one type of story tells us to do as these people did; the other type tells us not to do as these people did.

Before you leave a legacy, be sure that the stories you leave behind are stories of examples and not warnings.

A title of a book can help bring attention to that book. Surely that was the case with Napoleon Hill’s bestselling classic Think and Grow Rich! This book still sells hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide each year. As great as this title is, Think and Grow Rich would have succeeded under almost any title—for it is not just what’s printed on the cover but what is inside that makes a book a success or a failure. Nonetheless, I cannot imagine any potential reader who would not be intrigued by the promise inherent in Hill’s title.

Napoleon Hill’s comprehensive course on success has once again started this September. There is still time to enroll in his “Master Course” on success. I encourage you to invest in yourself and enroll in this gem of a course that Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone worked so hard to put together. If you learned much from the book you will learn much more from this course. Take the next step to your continuing success.

I wish you the best,

The Law of Success

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE
by Napoleon Hill

THERE are two kinds of knowledge. One is general, the other is specialized. General knowledge, no matter how great in quantity or variety it may be, is of but little use in the accumulation of money. The faculties of the great universities possess, in the aggregate, practically every form of general knowledge known to civilization. Most of the professors have but little or no money. They specialize on teaching knowledge, but they do not specialize on the organization, or the use of knowledge.

KNOWLEDGE will not attract money, unless it is organized, and intelligently directed, through practical PLANS OF ACTION, to the DEFINITE END of accumulation of money. Lack of understanding of this fact has been the source of confusion to millions of people who falsely believe that “knowledge is power.” It is nothing of the sort! Knowledge is only potential power. It becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action, and directed to a definite end.

This “missing link” in all systems of education known to civilization today, may be found in the failure of educational institutions to teach their students HOW TO ORGANIZE AND USE KNOWLEDGE AFTER THEY ACQUIRE IT. Many people make the mistake of assuming that, because Henry Ford had but little “schooling,” he is not a man of “education.” Those who make this mistake do not know Henry Ford, nor do they understand the real meaning of the word “educate.” That word is derived from the Latin word “educo,” meaning to educe, to draw out, to DEVELOP FROM WITHIN.

An educated man is not, necessarily, one who has an abundance of general or specialized knowledge.
An educated man is one who has so developed the faculties of his mind that he may acquire anything he wants, or its equivalent, without violating the rights of others. Henry Ford comes well within the meaning of this definition.

IT PAYS TO KNOW HOW TO PURCHASE KNOWLEDGE

First of all, decide the sort of specialized knowledge you require, and the purpose for which it is needed. To a large extent your major purpose in life, the goal toward which you are working, will help determine what knowledge you need. With this question settled, your next move requires that you have accurate information concerning dependable sources of knowledge. The more important of these are:

One’s own experience and education

Experience and education available through
cooperation of others (Master Mind Alliance)

Colleges and Universities

Public Libraries
(Through books and periodicals in which may be found all the knowledge organized by civilization.)

Special Training Courses
(Through night schools and home study schools in particular.)

As knowledge is acquired, it must be organized and put into use, for a definite purpose, through practical plans. Knowledge has no value except that which can be gained from its application toward some worthy end. This is one reason why college degrees are not valued more highly. They represent nothing but miscellaneous knowledge.

If you contemplate taking additional schooling, first determine the purpose for which you want the knowledge you are seeking, then learn where this particular sort of knowledge can be obtained, from reliable sources.

Successful men, in all callings, never stop acquiring specialized knowledge related to their major purpose, business, or profession. Those who are not successful usually make the mistake of believing that the knowledge acquiring period ends when one finishes school. The truth is that schooling does but little more than to put one in the way of learning how to acquire practical knowledge.

If you have the IMAGINATION, and seek a more profitable outlet for your personal services, this suggestion may be the stimulus for which you have been searching. The IDEA is capable of yielding an income far greater than that of the “average” doctor, lawyer, or engineer whose education required several years in college. The idea is saleable to those seeking new positions, in practically all positions calling for managerial or executive ability, and those desiring rearrangement of incomes in their present positions.

There is no fixed price for sound IDEAS!

Back of all IDEAS is specialized knowledge. Unfortunately, for those who do not find riches in abundance, specialized knowledge is more abundant and more easily acquired than IDEAS.
Because of this very truth, there is a universal demand and an ever-increasing opportunity for the person capable of helping men and women to sell their personal services advantageously. Capability means IMAGINATION, the one quality needed to combine specialized knowledge with IDEAS, in the form of ORGANIZED PLANS designed to yield riches.

If you have IMAGINATION this chapter may present you with an idea sufficient to serve as the beginning of the riches you desire. Remember, the IDEA is the main thing. Specialized knowledge may be found just around the corner—any corner!

The Napoleon Hill Foundation’s
Distance Learning Course

There’s an old quote that goes – “If you want to learn something, read about it. If you want to understand something, write about it. If you want to master something, teach it.” ~ Yogi Bhajan

This was the thinking behind going through the Napoleon Hill Foundation’s Distance Learning Course. The principles I had learned and understood for the past 30 years came full circle and I now (after going through the leader certification program) had the opportunity to teach these principles to others. But was I really the right person to teach this and was my understanding of the material good enough to pass on?

I thought I knew the material and followed the principles, so I believed I was a ‘credible source’ for passing this on to others. But the level of in-depth education I received from the Distance Learning Course really cemented in my mind that I had an understanding of the material and definitely helped to boost my confidence when it came to presenting the principles and speaking with enthusiasm and first-hand knowledge about how they work.

With each lesson of Napoleon Hill’s success principles, my understanding of the material grew. The combination of audio, video, reading, quizzes, stories and personal writing was tremendously helpful in going into great detail about the thinking, planning, and actions necessary to achieve success. While others may have had their own reasons for completing the Distance Learning Course, mine was in fact, to teach the principles to others. Specifically to public school students who I believe are most in need of this message and to the sales classes which I currently teach. My understanding of the content after completing the Distance Learning Course went far above my previous level of comprehension.

The commitment to this endeavor was not taken lightly. The entire curriculum was not particularly easy, even for someone who considered themselves pretty knowledgeable about the material. I began from the start to track my investment of time and logged approximately 142 hours of reading and listening, writing and quiz taking. This did not include the final Leader Certification weekend which is the next course I hope you take after taking the Distance Learning course. (4 days plus travel) and Final Exam; (another 8 hours or so). But without question, the time invested gave me a much deeper understanding of Napoleon Hill, his principles, how they apply in everyday life and how I was going to pass this material on to others.

As I reviewed the finished product (Leader Certification), I went back to my notes and found that I followed the principles Napoleon Hill spoke about as they pertain to all personal achievement. I clearly defined my goal, I wrote out what price I was willing to pay for the attainment of this goal, I established a timeline for attaining this goal, a written plan for attaining the goal, the contacts I would need to establish, the costs involved, etc.

From here, it was a matter of following the rest of the principles. Exercising Applied Faith even when the task seemed hard, exercising Personal Initiative and Self-discipline when I’d rather be out doing something else. Concentrated Attention was necessary every time the phone rang or a distraction would come up to stay focused. Of course, the principle of Going the Extra Mile came into play right away since this program was unpaid and in fact came with significant personal expense both in monetary terms and in time invested without compensation. Having a clear motive of what I hoped to get out of the program helped keep me on track and motivated.

All in all, the Distance Learning Course based on Napoleon Hill’s Science of Success was unquestionably a worthwhile investment.
