Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

When Napoleon Hill first published the Law of Success in 1928, it was an eight-volume set and each book covered two success principles. The first lesson focused on understanding the Mastermind alliance. The Mastermind principle was described as a newly discovered law of psychology which is the foundation stone of all personal achievement.

The best description of the Mastermind is that it is a harmonious cooperation of two or more people who ally themselves for the purpose of accomplishing any given task. In other words, two or more people are working together to accomplish a goal. This Mastermind principle has been likened to the idea of connecting to an electrical source in order to recharge or increase power.

An education is a very important thing to have in this lifetime. However, not all education comes from formal schooling. Instead, the majority of what we learn comes from the minds of other people. A person who can intelligently use the knowledge another possesses has more of an education than the person who has graduated with multiple degrees.

It should not be hard for you to see the benefits of the Mastermind alliance. This principle allows you to work directly with one or more people who are interested in helping you achieve your goal. The Mastermind also allows you to use the knowledge and experience of other people in order to get what you want. Finally, a Mastermind group can be a source of encouragement and inspiration, if you face adversity. While it is important to develop a definite major purpose, remain positive, and believe in yourself, it is equally important to seek the advice and help of others.

I wish you the best,

The Law of Success

This is the ninth of a series of excerpts that focus on the “secret” in Think and Grow Rich. What makes these selections so unique is that a keyword was chosen with an emphasis on the secret that Napoleon Hill so often mentioned. I know you will enjoy reading these powerful excerpts.

POWER OF THE MASTER MIND
The Driving Force
The Ninth Step toward Riches

by Napoleon Hill

POWER is essential for success in the accumulation of money.

PLANS are inert and useless, without sufficient POWER to translate them into ACTION. This chapter will describe the method by which an individual may attain and apply POWER.

POWER may be defined as “organized and intelligently directed KNOWLEDGE.” Power, as the term is here used, refers to ORGANIZED effort, sufficient to enable an individual to transmute DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. ORGANIZED effort is produced through the coordination of effort of two or more people, who work toward a DEFINITE end, in a spirit of harmony.

POWER IS REQUIRED FOR THE ACCUMULATION OF MONEY! POWER IS NECESSARY FOR THE RETENTION OF MONEY AFTER IT HAS BEEN ACCUMULATED!

Let us ascertain how power may be acquired. If power is “organized knowledge,” let us examine the sources of knowledge:

a. INFINITE INTELLIGENCE. This source of knowledge may be contacted through the procedure described in another chapter, with the aid of Creative Imagination.

b. ACCUMULATED EXPERIENCE. The accumulated experience of man, (or that portion of it which has been organized and recorded), may be found in any well-equipped public library. An important part of this accumulated experience is taught in public schools and colleges, where it has been classified and organized.

c. EXPERIMENT AND RESEARCH. In the field of science, and in practically every other walk of life, men are gathering, classifying, and organizing new facts daily. This is the source to which one must turn when knowledge is not available through “accumulated experience.” Here, too, the Creative Imagination must often be used.

Knowledge may be acquired from any of the foregoing sources. It may be converted into POWER by organizing it into definite PLANS and by expressing those plans in terms of ACTION.

Examination of the three major sources of knowledge will readily disclose the difficulty an individual would have, if he depended upon his efforts alone, in assembling knowledge and expressing it through definite plans in terms of ACTION. If his plans are comprehensive, and if they contemplate large proportions, he must, generally, induce others to cooperate with him, before he can inject into them the necessary element of POWER.

The “Master Mind” may be defined as: “Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.”

No individual may have great power without availing himself of the “Master Mind.” In a preceding chapter, instructions were given for the creation of PLANS for the purpose of translating DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. If you carry out these instructions with PERSISTENCE and intelligence, and use discrimination in the selection of your “Master Mind” group, your objective will have been half-way reached, even before you begin to recognize it.

Talking and Listening
by Jim Stovall

I remember as a young child being told by my parents and grandparents that I had two ears and one mouth, so I should listen twice as much as I talked. The fact that they had to repeatedly tell me this probably indicated that someday I would become a professional speaker.

We all need to listen—not only to what’s being said but to how it’s being said and to what’s behind the words. There’s a big difference between hearing, listening, and truly understanding.

I think it’s interesting that the words “listen” and “silent” contain all of the same letters. My late, great friend and colleague Dr. Stephen Covey often said, “Seek first to understand and then to be understood.” Dr. Covey recognized that in any conversation, debate, argument, or discussion, having both parties talking at the same time is counterproductive. He taught that you must first understand the other person’s position and be able to articulate it to their satisfaction before you should begin to make your own point.

Ironically, I have found that when I practice this wisdom of Dr. Covey’s, there is often very little difference between my opinion and the other person’s. Somehow, the process of understanding someone else’s words and the thoughts behind them allows us to reconsider our own position and discover a middle ground that had not previously been obvious.

As a blind person myself, people often ask me if my hearing is improved. Doctors have assured me that the acuity of blind people’s hearing does not improve, but their listening skills become very acute. Just as there are things you might see but overlook, there are things we hear that we do not allow to come into our consciousness. Listening to others not only shows respect, but it gives us an opportunity to understand, learn, and create consensus.

Oftentimes, arguments, debates, or disagreements have more to do with semantics than reality. People fight to have everyone understand and agree with their description or verbiage surrounding an issue more than the position on the issue itself. In order to create harmony and consensus, we must give up the need to be right. As long as we divide the world into right vs. wrong, we force there to be a winner and a loser. Anyone who has a significant other in their life knows that you can win an argument and walk away a loser. Listening is a skill, an art, and a science. It is one of the critical elements of success.

As you go through your day today, commit to listen, hear, and understand, then decide whether or not you have anything to say.

Today’s the day!
Jim Stovall
