The Napoleon Hill Foundation
Making the world a better place in which to live.

Dear Readers,

About twenty years ago, I organized a three-hour course at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise that was based on Napoleon Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. At that time, I was still working as a bank president and had not begun working for the Napoleon Hill Foundation yet.
Additionally, I taught the first course called Keys to Success at UVA-Wise about twelve times after that. I read numerous books on success that would complement the course material and tried to bring real-life examples to the class. For instance, when discussing the principle of adversity I used the story of Wilma Rudolph. Ms. Rudolph had a disability due to polio and had to wear a brace on her left leg. However, with help from her mother and doctors, she was able to overcome her adversity and she not only overcame this dilemma but excelled and became a renowned track and field Olympic athlete!
When I discussed autosuggestion in class, I often referred to a book by Shad Helmstetter Ph.D., called What to Say When You Talk to Yourself.  I think you will agree that the conversations we have with ourselves, are the most important conversations we will ever have. We tend to believe what we repeat to ourselves. We choose to think positive or negative thoughts, and the attitude that we adopt will also make a huge difference in our level of success.
Today you can take advantage of our Distance Learning course taught by Napoleon Hill.  Hill has a way of bringing to our attention that which we may not have thought about when it comes to the subject of Adversity and Defeat.  Napoleon Hill helps us realize there is a positive side to any adversity we face.

I wish you the best,

Don Green

No one who has attained success has not met with some form of failure comparable with the scope of his or her success. Edison “failed” with more than ten thousand different attempts to create a lightbulb before he hit on the formula that worked. Jonas Salk tried countless different media to cultivate the polio virus for a vaccine before he discovered that monkey brain tissue did the job.

Debbie Fields founded the high-profile Mrs. Fields Cookies chain with a single store and expanded it worldwide very quickly. Too quickly, in fact. The costs of expansion crippled the company, and Fields found herself deeply in debt. She learned that trying to own and run all the stores was simply too much. Now she franchises operations instead of running them herself, and the company is profitable and growing once more.

Defeat should be accepted merely as a test which permits you to discover the nature of your thoughts and their relation to your definite major purpose. Knowing this modifies your reaction to adversity and keeps you striving toward your goal. Defeat is never the same as failure unless and until it has been accepted as such. Emerson said:

“Our strength grows out of our weakness. Not until we are pricked and stung and sorely shot at, awakens the indignation which arms itself with secret forces. A great man is always willing to be little. While he sits on the cushion of advantages he goes to sleep. When he is pushed, tormented, defeated, he has a chance to learn something; he has been put on his wits; on his manhood; he has gained facts; learned from his ignorance; been cured of the insanity of conceit; has got moderation and real skill.”

Defeat, however, does not promise the full-blown flower of benefit, only the seed from which some benefit may be coaxed. You must recognize the seed, nurture, and cultivate it by definiteness of purpose; otherwise it will never sprout. Nature looks with disfavor on any attempt to obtain something for nothing.

You need to thank your faults when they are revealed to you because you cannot truly understand them until you have fought them.

THE GIFT OF PROBLEMS

One of my most popular books is entitled The Ultimate Gift. It is a novel that deals with discovering the 12 gifts that make our lives complete and fulfilled. Readers instantly understand the Gift of Family, the Gift of Friends, the Gift of Money, etc. The one gift that baffles most people at first glance is the Gift of Problems.

It is important that we realize that in every tragedy and in every problem, there is a potential gift and a seed of greater good. This is what I call the adversity advantage.

While tragedies such as the terrorist attacks of 9/11 have caused great pain and suffering, there are potential benefits that can come from the devastation. Who among us did not feel closer to friends and family? Who among us did not feel more patriotic and a heightened sense of pride in our country? Who among us has not come to value the job done by police, fire, and emergency workers?

The damage is done. There is nothing any of us can do to reverse the death and destruction. What we can do is commit ourselves to moving forward with a new sense of appreciation for the life we live and the freedoms we have.

Those who tried through senseless acts to destroy our spirit and our freedom have, instead, rekindled an even deeper appreciation for these things among all freedom-seeking and peace-loving people around the world.

When we think about the adversity advantage, it is important to remember that the adversity carries no automatic benefit with it, but our reaction to the adversity can make all the difference. For every person you can show me defeated by circumstances, I will show you another individual facing the same circumstances who has turned the adversity into an advantage and moves forward as a better, stronger person with a heightened sense of destiny for their life.

Today, begin to look for the adversity advantage in the current circumstances.

Today’s the day!

Jim Stovall
