The Napoleon Hill Foundation
Making the world a better place in which to live.

Dear Readers,

TRUE WEALTH CONSISTS of ideas, not money. Money is only the material medium that is exchanged for ideas. Paper money in itself—yen, euros, or another currency—is worth nothing; it is the ideas behind it that give it value.

The whole point is that you should not go outside to seek wealth. Wealth lies within you. Use your mind to think in a constructive manner.

Thinking does not mean idly wasting time. You need to think with a purpose in mind and an end in view: trying to solve a problem. In The Master Mind, Theron Q. Dumont says that thinking is forced upon us when we are deciding on a course to pursue, perhaps a life’s work to take up. This is the kind of thinking that was forced upon us in our younger days when we had to find the solution to a problem in mathematics, or when we tackled psychology in college.

When I talk about thinking, I do not mean holding petty opinions on a particular subject. I mean thinking about significant questions that lie outside the bounds of your narrow personal welfare. This is the kind of thinking that is now so rare—and so badly needed!

To seek to discover new worlds or new methods, you must do more than merely ponder. You must think in a constructive manner. The greatest discoveries have arisen out of things that everybody had seen, but only one person truly noticed. The biggest fortunes have been made from the opportunities that many people had, but that only one person took hold of.

Do you realize that the reality of poverty exists because the fear of poverty is visualized and thus brought into being? The lesson that the many millions of people who are in poverty have not yet learned is the law of supply.

The law of supply is that you must think abundance, see abundance, feel abundance, and believe abundance. No thought of limitations should enter your mind. It is not possible to desire anything of which, as far as the mind is concerned, there is not an abundant supply. If you can visualize it in your mind, you can realize it in your life.

The seeds of both prosperity and success need to be nourished with intense desire. Keep in your mind’s eye the picture of the thing you want. You must realize that you think in pictures. Believe in your mind’s eye, forget your fears, and realize that your future will be the one you make for yourself. There is nothing that can deter you if you set your goal, forget difficulties, and always keep the goal in your mind’s eye. It is no mere boast that our mental condition enables us to make our lives what we will. The only limitations are those that we set up in our own mind.

I wish you the best,

“Do the thing,” said Emerson, “and you shall have the power.”

Your greatest asset is one which you may not have properly evaluated.

It is the one asset with which you may lift yourself into whatever position or circumstance you desire, and it is one you can never lose through the perfidy of others, nor can it be taken from you or stolen.

It is appropriately called your “greatest asset” because it is the one thing over which you have complete, unchallengeable power of control, and it must have been so regarded by your Creator because it is the only thing over which you were given the exclusive usage.

Your greatest asset is your privilege of taking possession of your own mind and directing it to the attainment of purposes of your own choice.

This exclusive privilege carries with it profound riches as a reward for your using it wisely, and unmerciful penalties for your failure to embrace and use it wisely.

Among the riches with which you will be regarded for controlling and directing your own mind are financial security–sound health–peace of mind–the affection of friends and loved ones–and a station in life of your own choice.

Among the penalties you may have to pay for failure to take possession of your own mind are poverty–ill health–fear and worry–loss of friends–and unanswered prayers.

Your mind was given to you to be used for all your needs in the business of negotiating your way through life in a style of your own choice. Like any organ or muscle of your body, the brain in which your mind functions will atrophy and wither away through disuse.

The highest and the noblest use you can make of your mind is by development of a sixth sense through which you may communicate with the source of all wisdom when you pray.

And the more you depend upon prayer for guidance in all of your acts, the stronger will your mindpower become, until there will come a time when you may communicate with Infinite Intelligence instantaneously at will.

The late Charles P. Steinmetz once expressed the belief that the time would come when the act of prayer would be as scientific and as definite as the rules of mathematics or the laws of physics. Other great thinkers have expressed a similar belief.

The Magic Card

Just last week while listening to a radio newscast, i heard the most disturbing statistic imaginable. The statistic shocked me so much that I listened to the same newscast a half hour later to be certain that I had heard it right. The radio announcer proclaimed, “Less than 5% of Americans have a library card, and less than 1% use their card with any degree of frequency.”

As a blind person, I think back to when I could read a book with my eyes like you are reading this book now. I’m embarrassed to say that at that time in my life, I took reading for granted, and I don’t know that I ever read an entire book cover-to-cover. Today, with books-on-tape and a high-speed tape recorder, I read a book every day. This has literally changed my life.

I heard a wise man say once, “You will be the same person five years from today except for the people you meet and the books that you read.” At the time, I felt that it was an over-statement of fact. Now I believe, if anything, his words were understated.

Knowledge is the key to anything you want in this life. I’ve heard it said that if you take all the money in the world and divide it equally among everyone, in a few short years, the money will be back where it is today. In financial terms, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It is important to realize, however, that money is not the key. Knowledge is the key. And just as that knowledge allows money to accumulate around people who have attained a certain understanding about money, knowledge will allow you to attract whatever it is that you want in your life.

Virtually anything that you want to know is available for you within a few short miles of where you live at the public library. There is simply no excuse for those people who go through life ignorant of the knowledge it would take for them to reach their goals. You have heard it said, “It’s not what you know, but it’s who you know.” In reality, it is both. Success boils down to both what you know and who you know.

Some of the greatest minds in recorded history are waiting to communicate with you and tell you their secrets of getting anything you want out of this life. Their words, thoughts, and advice are located between the covers of books at your public library. Make a commitment to grow a little each day.

As one of the great cheerleaders of the written word always said, “The more books you read, the taller you grow.”

Today’s the day!

Jim Stovall
