Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Once you have a purpose in your mind and you have a passion for it – or, as Napoleon Hill said, you have a “burning desire” to accomplish it – you are well on your way.

Once you have read, studied, and learned to believe the principles of success, you will have at your disposal the tools you need to overcome problems and to achieve personal growth that will enable you to take the success journey.

It is a person’s aim or purpose that makes her. Without aim, she is like tumbleweed in that it is the wind that determines where she goes. Let one obstacle get in her way, and if she has no aim or purpose, she will alter her path. She focuses on her weakness, misery, and failure – in other words: “My life is aimless.”

A well-ascertained and generous purpose gives vigor, direction, and perseverance to all of a person’s life.

The qualities associated with a strong purpose are a well-disciplined intellect, character, influence, tranquility, and cheerfulness within – and those are what lead to success. Whatever a person’s talents and advantages may be, if he has no aim or a low one, he will be weak and despicable; if he has a high purpose, he cannot be other than respectable and influential. Without some definite object before us, some standard that we are earnestly striving to reach, we cannot expect to attain any great height, either mentally or morally. But setting high standards for ourselves and wishing to reach them without any further effort on our part is not enough to elevate us to any great degree.

I wish you the best,
Don Green

The Law of Success

Definite Chief Aim
by Napoleon Hill

This is the second in a series of excerpts from Napoleon Hill’s Law of Success.

The key-note of this entire lesson may be found in the word “definite.” It is most appalling to know that ninety-five per cent of the people of the world are drifting aimlessly through life, without the slightest conception of the work for which they are best fitted, and with no conception whatsoever of even the need of such a thing as a definite objective toward which to strive.

There is a psychological as well as an economic reason for the selection of a definite chief aim in life. Let us devote our attention to the psychological side of the question first. It is a well-established principle of psychology that a person’s acts are always in harmony with the dominating thoughts of his or her mind.

Any definite chief aim that is deliberately fixed in the mind and held there, with the determination to realize it, finally saturates the entire subconscious mind until it automatically influences the physical action of the body toward the attainment of that purpose.

Your definite chief aim in life should be selected with deliberate care, and after it has been selected it should be written out and placed where you will see it at least once a day, the psychological effect of which is to impress this purpose upon your subconscious mind so strongly that it accepts that purpose as a pattern or blueprint that will eventually dominate your activities in life and lead you, step by step, toward the attainment of the object back of that purpose.

The principle of psychology through which you can impress your definite chief aim upon your subconscious mind is called Auto-suggestion, or suggestion which you repeatedly make to yourself. It is a degree of self-hypnotism, but do not be afraid of it on that account, for it was this same principle through the aid of which Napoleon Bonaparte lifted himself from the lowly station of poverty-stricken Corsican to the dictatorship of France. It was through the aid of this same principle that Thomas A. Edison has risen from the lowly beginning of a news butcher to where he is accepted as the leading inventor of the world. It was through the aid of this same principle that Lincoln bridged the mighty chasm between his lowly birth, in a log cabin in the mountains of Kentucky, and the presidency of the greatest nation on earth. It was through the aid of this same principle that Theodore Roosevelt became one of the most aggressive leaders that ever reached the presidency of the United States.

You need have no fear of the principle of Auto-suggestion as long as you are sure that the objective for which you are striving is one that will bring you happiness of an enduring nature. Be sure that your definite purpose is constructive; that its attainment will bring hardship and misery to no one; that it will bring you peace and prosperity, then apply, to the limit of your understanding, the principle of self-suggestion for the speedy attainment of this purpose.

On the street corner, just opposite the room in which I am writing, I see a man who stands there all day long and sells peanuts. He is busy every minute. When not actually engaged in making a sale he is roasting and packing the peanuts in little bags. He is one of that great army constituting the ninety-five percent who have no definite purpose in life. He is selling peanuts, not because he likes that work better than anything else he might do, but because he never sat down and thought out a definite purpose that would bring him greater returns for his labor. He is selling peanuts because he is a drifter on the sea of life, and one of the tragedies of his work is the fact that the same amount of effort that he puts into it if directed along other lines, would bring him much greater returns.

Another one of the tragedies of this man’s work is the fact that he is unconsciously making use of the principle of self-suggestion, but he is doing it to his own disadvantage. No doubt, if a picture could be made of his thoughts, there would be nothing in that picture except a peanut roaster, some little paper bags and a crowd of people buying peanuts. This man could get out of the peanut business if he had the vision and the ambition first to imagine himself in a more profitable calling, and the perseverance to hold that picture before his mind until it influenced him to take the necessary steps to enter a more profitable calling. He puts sufficient labor into his work to bring him a substantial return if that labor were directed toward the attainment of a definite purpose that offered bigger returns.

A definite purpose is something that you must create for yourself. No one else will create it for you and it will not create itself. What are you going to do about it? and when? and how?

Start now to analyze your desires and find out what it is that you wish, then make up your mind to get it. Lessen Three will point out to you the next step and show you how to proceed. Nothing is left to chance, in this Reading Course. Every step is marked plainly. Your part is to follow the directions until you arrive at your destination, which is represented by your definite chief aim. Make that aim clear and back it up with persistence which does not recognize the word “impossible.” When you come to select your definite chief aim just keep in mind the fact that you cannot aim too high.

Tomorrow Is Not the Day
by Jim Stovall

Those of you who are regular readers of this ongoing effort of mine know that each of my columns ends with the phrase, “Today’s the day!” This is a constant reminder that yesterday is nothing more than a passing memory and tomorrow is nothing more than a hopeful promise. Today holds our only existence.

We, here in Western civilization, have failed to master the concept of living in the moment. We spend so much time worrying about yesterday or planning tomorrow that we fail to live today.

Think about trying to live your life “on purpose.” This means really do what you’re doing with your whole mind, body, and spirit. Don’t be doing one thing and thinking about doing another. This conscious effort to “live in the moment,” will make you better at the things you do but, more importantly, will cause you to examine the significance of the tasks on which you decide to invest your time.

One of the reasons we let our minds wander into the past or the future is because we are all guilty of filling our days with mundane and mindless activities. Some of these are unavoidable, but we must constantly eliminate as many of the time-wasters as possible. A life lived to its fullest is nothing more than a series of years, months, weeks, and days lived in the same fashion. Somehow, when we project into the future, we only think of things that hold a great deal of significance to us.

Our future can only be significant if we build it on top of the meaningful tasks that we perform today.

Remember that this moment of this day is all we really have. As always, today’s the day!

Think and Grow Rich

Master-Key to Riches

Truthful Living

by Napoleon Hill Foreword, Actions and Annotations by Jeffrey Gitomer

New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Gitomer brings you the very foundation of Napoleon Hill’s self-help legacy: his long-lost original notes, letters, and lectures—now compiled, edited, and annotated for the modern reader.

Twenty years before the publication of his magnum opus Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill was an instructor, philosopher, and writer at the George Washington Institute in Chicago, where he taught courses in advertising and sales. These rare, never-before-seen lectures were thought to be lost to history. Until now.

Given exclusive access to the archives of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, Jeffrey Gitomer has unearthed Hill’s original course notes containing the fundamental beliefs in hard work and personal development that established Hill as a global leader of success and positive attitude.

In Truthful Living, Gitomer has captured Hill’s foundational wisdom for the twenty-first century. These easy-to-implement real-world strategies for life, family, business, and the bottom line prove as energizing and inspiring today as they were nearly one hundred years ago.

Napoleon Hill’s Golden Rules

by Napoleon Hill

Napoleon Hill’s Golden Rules: The Lost Writings consists of a series of magazine articles Napoleon Hill wrote between 1919 and1923 for Success Magazine, of which he eventually become an editor. Hill’s obsession with achieving material success had led him from poverty stricken Appalachian Mountains with the desire to study successful people.

These articles focus on Hill’s philosophy of success, drawing on the thoughts and experience of a multitude of rags-to-riches tycoons, showing readers how these successful people achieved such status.

Many of his writings such as the chapter on Law of Attraction, written in the March 1919 issue, have recently basis of several bestselling books. Readers will discover principles that will assure their success if studied and put into action.

The Law of Success

by Napoleon Hill

This edition of Law of Success contains 4 volumes, the other three volumes are available on Amazon.com too.

In response to popular demand, and with great pride, the Napoleon Hill Foundation and its Board of Trustees present this edition of Dr. Hill’s classic course, The Law of Success. To preserve the integrity of Napoleon Hill’s ideas, the text of his first published work is largely unmodified. Our changes have been small. Specifically, The Law of Success was originally released in eight volumes: beginning with the third edition, the eight volumes were combined into one facsimile volume. Consequently, you will notice that the page numbers start over every second lesson. Additionally, a few pages where the type had become illegible have been reset for easier reading.

The universal message of The Law of Success remains unaltered, however. Because of changes in customs and word use, the language may sometimes appear dated, but the underlying principles are as valid today as they were when Hill first presented them in his dynamic and forceful style. In particular, his use of the masculine gender should be taken to connote “mankind” or “humankind” rather than men alone. No one would have been prouder or more excited by the advances of the women’s movement than Dr. Hill, who advocated equal rights and equal opportunity for all people long before it was fashionable.

The Success Philosophy that Napoleon Hill presents in this course and in his other works has withstood the test of time. His principles of success have changed the lives of countless women and men from all walks of life on every continent. They can change your life, too, if you will apply them and get into action. This power to change your life is the legacy of Napoleon Hill; that is the standard by which all works of motivational literature and programs are measured.

To attain your goals and know fulfillment in life, study, think, plan, and apply the principles this book has to offer. To merely read and agree with Dr. Hill is to miss the crucial point of his philosophy: Success comes only when you act on what you know and believe.
