Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

To begin to solve a problem or reach a goal, you first must determine what you want in your future. Albert Einstein said, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”

You should always remember that while you may know what you want and have a good idea of how to get it unless you are inspired to put forth the necessary effort, you will not be a success.

However, once you raise your desire for a burning passion, you will find the means to accomplish what you want. You will not have all the answers, but you will accumulate answers and assistance from others once you are inspired enough to start your journey to success.

People who are successful used what they knew when they started plus the knowledge that they acquired on their voyage. Inspiration kept them going even when obstacles got in their way.

In Victor Frankl’s milestone book Man’s Search for Meaning, about his confinement in the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz, Frankl said that he discovered that man would find a how once he had a why. This is like a goal or obstacle that will be met with success or over-come once the why is developed into a passion or a burning desire to overcome whatever may lie in one’s path to success.

Winston Churchill put it well when he said, “Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”

This is the reason why many people start for a specified destination and do not quit until they reach that destination. Those who know their destination and have a strong desire to reach it will not stop until they do so. Also, there is one main reason why many people fail: they do not get started. Either they simply do not begin or they start, but are stopped by the slightest obstacle in their path.

Napoleon Hill realized the importance of remaining enthusiastic and optimistic not only at the beginning of the year but throughout the year as we achieve the small goals that will eventually take us to the apex of our dreams. He reminds us that any obstacles that we encounter are really our greatest opportunities. I enthusiastically wish you all the best as you set your goals for this New Year!

I wish you the best,

Be Optimistic to Attain a Goal
by Napoleon Hill

Optimism is a matter of mental habit. You can learn to practice the habit of optimism — and thereby greatly enhance your chances of achieving success. Or you can drive yourself into the pit of pessimism and failure.

Optimism is one of the most important traits of a pleasing personality. But it results largely from other traits we have discussed — a good sense of humor, hopefulness, the ability to overcome fear, contentment, a positive mental attitude, flexibility, faith, and decisiveness.

The pessimist fears the Devil and spends most of his time fighting him.

The optimist loves his Creator and spends his time worshipping Him.

You can fight pessimism through complete belief in two of the most basic truths of the Science of Success:

1. “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.”

2. “Every adversity and defeat carries the seed of an equivalent benefit, if we are ingenious enough to find it.”

Lay Pleasant Plans

Instead of worrying about the bad things that might befall you, spend a few minutes every day numerating the pleasant events that will happen tomorrow, next week, next year! By thinking about them, you will find yourself laying plans to make them happen! Then you are getting the habit of optimism.

Remember that no great leader or successful man was ever a pessimist. What could such a leader promise his followers but despair and defeat?

Even in the darkest days of the Civil War, leaders on both sides — such as Lincoln and Lee — held faith in better days to come.

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s natural optimism breathed a new spirit of hope into a dejected nation in the depths of the Depression.

Even infamous leaders — the Hitlers, Stalins, Mussolinis and Maos — rely on the promise of better days to win followers with such catch phrases as “tomorrow the world,” “nothing to lose but your chains,” and “the new Asia.”

Can you — living under the finest social economic and political system in human history — afford to have any less?

Remember that like attracts like in human relations, no matter what the rule may be in the physical world. An optimist tends to congregate with optimists, just as success attracts more success.

But the pessimist breeds worries and trouble without speaking a word or performing an act because his negative mental attitude serves as a perfect magnet for them.

Optimism is, in itself, a kind of success. For it means you have a healthy, peaceful and contented mind. An exceedingly wealthy man can be a failure physically if his constant pessimism has brought him a case of ulcers.

Optimism isn’t a state of mind in which you throw judgment to the winds in starry-eyed belief future events will take care of themselves. Such an outlook is only for fools.

Use Sound Judgment

It is, however, a firm belief that you can make things come out right by thinking ahead and deciding on a course of action based on sound judgment. Let me give an example.

At the height of the big boom of 1928, there were those false optimists who refused to believe that the bubble could ever burst. They jeered those few farsighted “pessimists” who warned that the nation was treading on dangerously inflationary and speculative ground.

When the bottom dropped out, the “optimists” were caught short. Many lacked the spiritual strength to seek victory in defeat and revealed themselves as the true pessimists.

But those who had looked ahead fearlessly and honestly had put themselves in position by selling stock short and other devices — to make a killing. They were revealed as the true optimists.

You can be that kind of optimist. Learn to meet the future head-on. Analyze it. Weigh the factors with clear judgment. Then decide upon your course of action to make things turn out the way you want them.

You’ll find that the future holds nothing that you ever need fear.

Opportunity
by Jim Stovall

The whole world is looking for a great opportunity, and they trip over one about three times each week. Opportunity is little more than the solution to a problem. The greater the problem, the greater the opportunity. Opportunity is the process of implementing a great idea.

If you want to have a great idea, simply go through your daily routine and wait for a problem or obstacle to appear. When it does, simply ask yourself, “How could I have avoided or overcome that problem?” The answer to that question is a great idea. To convert that great idea into an opportunity, simply ask yourself, “How could I help other people avoid or overcome that same problem?” The answer to that question is a great opportunity.

Andy Rooney said, “I’ve learned that opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.” How many times have you seen a new product, service, or concept and thought, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Or, even worse yet, come to the realization that you did think of that but failed to act upon it.

Remember, in order to have an opportunity, you have to have an idea and implementation. One without the other is meaningless. Once you grasp this concept, you will begin to look at problems as potential opportunities that need to be harvested immediately. If you’re facing a problem or a challenge in your life, you must assume that a multitude of other people are dealing with the same situation. In the future, you will be providing the solution to their problem or they will be providing the solution to your problem.

One of the best examples I have ever seen of someone who experienced a problem, overcame it, and now helps others overcome that same problem via a tremendous opportunity is my friend Harland C. Stonecipher, Founder/CEO of Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. Harland often says, “Out of every problem or difficulty, there is an equal or greater opportunity. We must keep that in mind and look for the opportunity. Mine was an automobile accident in 1969.” Harland’s accident and the ensuing legal problems spawned a solution for Harland, as well as many others, and an opportunity for countless people to achieve their goals.

Once an opportunity is implemented, it can become like fine wine in that it improves with age and increases in value. But until you implement your idea, it is like a ripe fruit that will decrease in value quickly and become worthless in the very near future.

Ideas and opportunities are not given to us as a gift. They are loaned to us as a responsibility. If we don’t act upon them, someone else will fill the void. Every great success and every significant fortune came from someone recognizing a problem, creating an idea surrounding the solution and then implementing it. Problems are normal. Ideas are commonplace. But implementation, resulting in opportunity, is the stuff dreams are made of.

As you go through your day today, welcome problems, embrace ideas and implement solutions in the form of opportunity.

Today’s the day!
