Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

People who are successful used what they knew when they started plus the knowledge that they acquired on their voyage. Inspiration kept them going even when obstacles got in their way.

In Victor Frankl’s milestone book, Man’s Search for Meaning, about his confinement in the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz, Frankl said that he discovered that man would find a how once he had a why.

This is like a goal or obstacle that will be met with success or overcome once the why is developed into a passion or a burning desire to overcome whatever may lie in one’s path to success.

Winston Churchill put it well when he said, “Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”

This is the reason why many people start for a specified destination and do not quit until they reach that destination. Those who know their destination and have a strong desire to reach it will not stop until they do so. Also, there is one main reason why many people fail: they do not get started. Either they simply do not begin or they start, but are stopped by the slightest obstacle in their path. As writer Frank Clark put it, “If you can find a path that has no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.” Your journey is not likely to be smooth, but you will learn from your failures—sometimes even more than from your successes.

While you are on your journey, remember that each of us should make the world a better place in which to live. Progress has always been a result of each generation’s desire to make the world a better place for the generation that follows.

I invite you to take advantage of this adverse time you may have now to enroll in our Distance Learning Course. It just may be the added boost you need to help you along once we all get up and running again. Take advantage and invest in yourself!

I wish you the best,
Don Green

Evidence That Adversity May Become a Blessing
by Napoleon Hill

Milo C. Jones operated a small farm near Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Although his physical health was good, he seemed unable to make his farm yield more than the bare necessities of life. Late in life he suffered a paralytic stroke and was put to bed by relatives who believed him to be a hopeless invalid.

For weeks he remained unable to move a single muscle. All he had left was his mind, the one great power he had drawn upon so rarely because he had earned his living by the use of his brawn. Out of this sheer necessity he discovered the power of his mind and began to draw upon it!

Almost immediately he discovered the seed of equivalent benefit which was destined to compensate him for his misfortune. He recognized the seed, germinated it by application of definiteness of purpose and the master mind principle, and put it to use. That seed consists of a simple idea…an idea which he probably would never have discovered had he not been driven to it by his temporary defeat. After he had thoroughly organized his thinking, he called in the members of his family and revealed the idea to them.

“I can no longer work with my hands,” he began. “So I have decided to work with my mind. The rest of you will have to take the place of my hands. Please plant every acre of our farm you can spare in corn. Then start raising pigs with that corn. Slaughter the pigs while they are young and tender, and convert them into sausage. We will call them Jones Little Pig Sausages, and we will sell them directly to the retail stores all over the country.

The family went to work as directed. In a few years, the trade name of Jones Little Pig Sausages became a household byword throughout the nation. And the Jones family became wealthier than they had ever dreamed possible. Milo C. Jones lived to see himself possessed of a fortune earned on the same farm which previous to his misfortune had yielded him only a scant living. He had switched from the failure side of the River of Life to the success side of the stream – voluntarily – by the power of thought.

When defeat overtakes you, don’t spend all your
time counting your losses. Save some of it to count
your gains and you may find that they are greater than
your losses.

You may wonder why Milo C. Jones had to be overcome by an incurable physical ailment before he discovered the power of his mind. Others may say that Milo C. Jones’ compensation was only a monetary compensation and, therefore, not equivalent to his loss.

This might be true if it were not for the probability that he received compensations far beyond that of the financial gain we have outlined. Perhaps his greatest gain was of a spiritual nature, for his experience might well have given him a better understanding of his spiritual forces. It may have made him more understanding and appreciative of his family. They may have gained a far better attitude toward him.

It is a known fact that a prolonged illness often forces one to stop, look and listen. Thus we often learn to understand that still, small voice which speaks from within and causes us to take inventory of the factors which have led to defeat and failure of the past.

“A fever,” said Emerson, “a mutilation, a cruel disappointment, a loss of wealth, a loss of friends, seem at the moment unpaid loss, and unpayable. But the sure years reveal the deep remedial force that underlies all facts. The death of a dear friend, spouse, brother, lover, which seemed nothing but privation somewhat later assumes the aspect of a guide or genius; for it commonly operates revolutions in our way of life, terminates an epoch of infancy or of youth which was waiting to be closed, breaks up a wonted occupation, or a household, or style of living, and allows the formation of new ones more friendly to the growth of character.

The Human Factor
by Jim Stovall

There are certain scientific laws that seem to apply to every area of the natural world. They appear to apply consistently and universally. Sir Isaac Newton taught us that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Newton’s theory became a law because it is provable, repeatable, and verifiable. Human beings seem to be the wild card in the scientific, natural world.

One of the most powerful books I have ever read is Man’s Search for Meaning by Dr. Viktor Frankl. Dr. Frankl was a highly educated, well-known, and respected behavioral scientist. He lived in Austria in the early part of the 20th century. He had a wife, family, and successful professional practice until the Nazis invaded Austria at the beginning of World War II. Then, his possessions were taken from him, his family was killed, and he was placed in a concentration camp where he was tortured for years. As horrific as his circumstances were, they gave Dr. Frankl the opportunity to discover something about himself and human nature.

Dr. Frankl learned that throughout the natural world, there is a stimulus that is followed by a predictable reaction. However, he discovered that, in human beings, between this stimulus and reaction, there is a brief—almost imperceptible—void that we are allowed to fill with a unique element I would call free will. Free will allows us to control our reaction regardless of the stimulus. If people confront us with hate, violence, and torture, we can react in kind or choose to respond with love, acceptance, and tolerance.

In the midst of the horrors inside a concentration camp, Viktor Frankl discovered that his captors could take away all of his possessions, his family, and even his life, but they could not take away his free will and make him react in a way he chose not to react. Thankfully, few of us will ever be faced with the challenges that Dr. Viktor Frankl and his family had to deal with, but we can still invoke our free will in any situation.

For every disaster, defeat, and downturn that may destroy a person, you can find another individual facing the same circumstances that reacts to the same stimulus and emerges with success and victory while overcoming the challenge. Among the most powerful gifts we have been given as human beings is this element of free will. In order to reach our potential, we must recognize it, utilize it, and seize the day.

As you go through your day today, remember that we don’t control the stimuli, but we do control our reaction.

Today’s the day!
