A System of Success

The Next Distance Learning Class begins on February 15, 2021.
Sign up today!

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

The Law of Success

Commissioned by Andrew Carnegie in 1908 to research and document the first study of what makes people successful, Napoleon Hill published the sixteen-lesson, eight-volume Law of Success course in 1928. Many more Napoleon Hill books followed, including the most famous and bestselling Think and Grow Rich in 1937. But the Law of Success publication remains a popular book to this day, containing as it does the fruits of twenty years of research and interviews of more than 500 successful men. It was, indeed, the first of its kind, as Mr. Carnegie had intended and hoped for, and it remains an important analysis and exposition of what Mr. Hill called the “Science of Success.”

The original publication contained 1170 pages. There have been many requests over the years for a version that is more concise and compact, and yet one that contains the basic lessons discovered and set forth in the discussion of the success principles. The Trustees of the Napoleon Hill Foundation heard these requests and took on the task of producing such a book, containing what they viewed as the essential lessons and most important portions of the original work, and what you are about to read is the result. This version has dispensed with the third-party quotations and “After the Lesson” essays in the original work, has deleted some stories that were repeated in other of Hill’s books published after 1928, and has eliminated repetition (rightly valued by Mr. Hill as a learning method but not appropriate for a compact volume). The Trustees believe, and hope you will agree, that the resulting volume contains all the essential wisdom of this groundbreaking work, Law of Success.

I have been the Executive Director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation since 2000, and I and the other Trustees who contributed to this work have nearly 200 combined years of service to the Foundation. I believe they are singularly equipped to produce the best distillation of Napoleon Hill’s seminal work, and I am proud to present this book for your enjoyment, appreciation, and education.

I wish you the best,
Don Green

Definite Chief Aim

The keynote of this entire chapter may be found in the word “definite.”

It is most appalling to know that ninety-five percent of the people of the world are drifting aimlessly through life, without the slightest conception of the work for which they are best fitted, and with no conception whatsoever of even the need of such a thing as a definite objective toward which to strive.

There is a psychological as well as an economic reason for the selection of a definite chief aim in life. Let us devote our attention to the psychological side of the question first. It is a well-established principle of psychology that a person’s acts are always in harmony with the dominating thoughts of his or her mind.

Any definite chief aim that is deliberately fixed in the mind and held there, with the determination to realize it, finally saturates the entire subconscious mind until it automatically influences the physical action of the body toward the attainment of that purpose.

Your definite chief aim in life should be selected with deliberate care, and after it has been selected, it should be written out and placed where you will see it at least once a day. The psychological effect is to impress this purpose upon your subconscious mind so strongly that it accepts that purpose as a pattern or blueprint that will eventually dominate your activities in life and lead you, step by step, toward the attainment of the object back of that purpose.

On the street corner, just opposite the room in which I am writing, I see a man who stands there all day long and sells peanuts. He is busy every minute. When not actually engaged in making a sale, he is roasting and packing the peanuts in little bags. He is one of that great army constituting the ninety-five percent who have no definite purpose in life. He is selling peanuts, not because he likes that work better than anything else he might do, but because he never sat down and thought out a definite purpose that would bring him greater returns for his labor. He is selling peanuts because he is a drifter on the sea of life, and one of the tragedies of his work is the fact that the same amount of effort that he puts into it, if directed along other lines, would bring him much greater returns.

All great leaders base their leadership upon a definite chief aim. Followers are willing followers when they know that their leader is a person with a definite chief aim who has the courage to back up that purpose with action. Even a balky horse knows when a driver with a definite chief aim takes hold of the reins, and the horse yields to that driver. When a man with a definite chief aim starts through a crowd, everybody stands aside and makes a way for him, but let a man hesitate and show by his actions that he is not sure which way he wants to go, and the crowd will step all over his toes and refuse to budge an inch out of his way.

So much for the psychological viewpoint of a definite purpose. Let us now turn to the economic side of the question.

If a steamship lost its rudder in mid-ocean and began circling around, it would soon exhaust its fuel supply without reaching shore, despite the fact that it would use up enough energy to carry it to shore and back several times.

The man who labors without a definite purpose, which is backed up by a definite plan for its attainment, resembles the ship that has lost its rudder. Hard labor and good intentions are not sufficient to carry a man through to success, for how may a man be sure that he has attained success unless he has established in his mind some definite object that he wishes?

Every well-built house started in the form of a definite purpose plus a definite plan, in the nature of a set of blueprints. Imagine what would happen if one tried to build a house by the haphazard method, without plans. Workmen would be in each other’s way, building material would be piled all over the lot before the foundation was completed, and everybody on the job would have a different notion as to how the house ought to be built. Result: chaos and misunderstandings and cost that would be prohibitive.

Yet have you ever stopped to think that most people finish school and take up employment or enter a trade or profession without the slightest conception of anything that even remotely resembles a definite purpose or a definite plan? In view of the fact that science has provided reasonably accurate ways and means of analyzing character and determining the lifework for which people are best fitted, does it not seem a modern tragedy that ninety-five percent of the adult population of the world is made up of men and women who are failures because they have not found their proper niches in the world’s work?

Andrew Carnegie’s advice was this: “Place all your eggs in one basket and then watch the basket to see that no one kicks it over.” By that advice he meant, of course, that we should not dissipate any of our energies by engaging in sidelines. Carnegie was a sound economist and he knew that most men would do well if they so harnessed and directed their energies that some one thing would be done well.

In your struggle for success, you should keep constantly in mind the necessity of knowing what it is that you want— of knowing precisely what is your definite purpose—and the value of the principle of organized effort in the attainment of that which constitutes your definite purpose.

The Law of Success
by Jennifer Janechek

Before Napoleon Hill’s landmark bestseller Think and Grow Rich came The Law of Success, an 8-volume, 16-lesson course that laid out, for the first time ever, a complete “Science of Success.” Backed by 20 years of research into the thoughts and behaviors of over 500 of America’s most prosperous individuals, The Law of Success remains the most comprehensive study of what makes people successful. What sets it apart from other success systems is that it doesn’t simply teach you how to achieve your major purpose in life—it does that as well, but it also activates your success nature as you read it so that you are primed to identify opportunities, leverage the power of your imagination, and replace destructive habits with constructive ones. As Hill explains, “The chief object of this book…is to educate more than it is to inform—meaning by the word ‘educate’ to educe, to draw out, to develop from within, to cause you to use the power that lies sleeping within you, awaiting the awakening hand of some appropriate stimulus to arouse you to action.”

Hill’s lessons draw out your greatness by equipping you to harness the force of self-knowledge—a clear understanding of the unique purpose that sets you apart and arouses a burning desire within you to bring it to reality. So many people fail to put in the work to identify their definite major purpose and therefore expend endless amounts of energy on tasks that are not directed toward a specific end other than “getting by.” If you spend your life “getting by,” life will get right by you—and along with it, your chance to identify that singular aim whose attainment will bring you true and lasting happiness. The Law of Success functions like a mirror that asks you to scrutinize and recalibrate your thoughts and actions so that you can create the success you desire. To this end, Hill states, “The truth for which man is eternally searching is wrapped up in his own being; therefore, it is fruitless to search far afield in the wilderness of life or in the hearts of other men to find it. To do so brings you no nearer to that which you are seeking, but takes you further away from it.” Know yourself—know the limitless possibilities that exist for you if you can control your thoughts and organize your actions according to your definite chief aim.

In its original, 8-volume form, The Law of Success was a whopping 1,170 pages. It is being re-released in a condensed, 256-page version from Sound Wisdom so that the modern reader can benefit from its insights and integrate them seamlessly into his or her busy life. Don M. Green, executive director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, introduces the new edition as follows: “There have been many requests over the years for a version that is more concise and compact yet contains the core lessons discovered and set forth in the discussion of the sixteen success principles. The Trustees of the Napoleon Hill Foundation heard these requests and took on the task of producing such a book, containing what they viewed as the essential lessons and most important portions of the original work…. This version has dispensed with the third-party quotations and ‘After the Lesson’ essays in the original work, deleted some stories that were repeated in other of Hill’s books published after 1928, and eliminated repetition (rightly valued by Mr. Hill as a learning method but not appropriate for a compact volume). The Trustees believe, and hope you will agree, that the resulting volume contains all the essential wisdom of this groundbreaking work, The Law of Success.”

Read The Law of Success, and you’ll discover the power of doing what Andrew Carnegie advised: “Place all your eggs in one basket and then watch the basket to see that no one kicks it over.”

Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite

by Napoleon Hill

Based on a series of booklets written by bestselling motivational writer Napoleon Hill, Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite outlines the importance of three essential principles of success: self-discipline, learning from defeat, and the Golden Rule applied.

In 1908, Napoleon Hill met industrialist Andrew Carnegie for what he believed would be a short interview for an article. Instead, Carnegie spent hours detailing his principles of success to the young magazine reporter. He then challenged Hill to devote 20 years to collating a proven formula that would propel people of all backgrounds to happiness, harmony, and prosperity. Hill accepted the challenge, which he distilled in the perennial bestseller Think and Grow Rich.

Now, more than a century later, the Napoleon Hill Foundation is releasing this epic conversation to remind people that there are simple solutions to the problems troubling us most, everything from relationships and education to homelessness and even democracy. This is revealed in three major principles: self-discipline, which shows how the six departments of the mind may be organized and directed to any end; learning from defeat, which describes how defeat can be made to yield “the seed of an equivalent benefit” and how to turn it into a stepping-stone to greater achievement; and the Golden Rule applied for developing rewarding relationships, peace of mind, and a strengthened consciousness.

Each chapter draws on Carnegie’s words and advice as inspiration, with annotations by Napoleon Hill scholar James Whittaker explaining why they are essential for reaching your goals and prospering—for you, your family, and your community.
