Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

“He that would have fruit must climb the tree.” ~Thomas Fuller

Dear Readers:

Personal Initiative unlocks the door to personal achievement. Without taking those precarious first steps under the influence of personal initiative no dream can be fulfilled. Procrastination is the reason so few people ever move forward in procuring their dreams. When we procrastinate we are telling ourselves that for whatever reason we do not have the energy, talent, motivation, inspiration, willpower, desire, aim, energy, enthusiasm, etc., to move toward our goal. In a lock down fashion, procrastination is the enemy that defeats us before we start. By jolting ourselves out of this process of stagnation, we open the doors to our life’s work.

Angelina Ballerina by Katharine Holabird and illustrated by Helen Craig is a children’s story filled with unbounded energy, enthusiasm, and action. The little mouse heroine only desires one thing in life, and that is to dance as a ballerina. Daily, she pretends, she makes believe, and she practices dance moves that an aspiring ballerina would make. She focuses on being a ballerina at school, at home, and even in her dreams to the exclusion of everything else. She is becoming a nuisance and her parents express concern. Mother Mouse discusses the growing problem with Father Mouse. Mr. Mouse suggests a solution, and with gift box in hand, he and Mrs. Mouse present Angelina a pair of ballet slippers and a pink ballet dress. Next, they enroll her in Miss Lilly’s Ballet School where she can dance and practice to her heart’s content. Her definite chief aim of becoming a real ballerina is taking shape. Soon, Angelina begins to clean her room, to be on time for school, and to behave better at home. Her heart’s desire is being met, and she no longer dreams about becoming a ballerina. Instead she is growing into one!

This touching story details the simple beginnings of a life’s career. Fortunately, Angelina’s parents recognize her interest and budding talent and help her begin to fulfill her life’s mission. By paying attention to where our interests and energy take us, we too can learn where our hidden talents are waiting for fulfillment. The saying “leap and the net will appear,” applies to each of us. We must risk looking childish, foolish, and unaccomplished, if someday we are to become a leader in our field.

Be Your Very Best Always,
Judy Williamson

The Law of Success

The Pass-Key that Opens the Door to Opportunity
by Napoleon Hill

A great philosopher once said: “Initiative is the pass-key that opens the door to opportunity.”

I do not recall who this philosopher was, but I know that he was great because of the soundness of his statement.

We will now proceed to outline the exact procedure that you must follow if you are to become a person of initiative and leadership.

First: You must master the habit of procrastination and eliminate it from your make-up. This habit of putting off until tomorrow that which you should have done last week or last year or a score of years ago is gnawing at the very vitals of your being, and you can accomplish nothing until you throw it off.

The method through which you eliminate procrastination is based upon a well known and scientifically tested principle of psychology which has been referred to in the two preceding lessons of this course as Autosuggestion.

Copy the following formula and place it conspicuously in your room where you will see it as you retire at night and as you arise in the morning:

Initiative and Leadership

Having chosen a definite chief aim as my life-work I now understand it to be my duty to transform this purpose into reality.

Therefore, I will form the habit of taking some definite action each day that will carry me one step nearer the attainment of my definite chief aim.

I know that procrastination is a deadly enemy of all who would become leaders in any undertaking, and I will eliminate this habit from my make-up by:

a. Doing some one definite thing each day, that ought to be done, without anyone telling me to do it.

b. Looking around until I find at least one thing that I can do each day, that I have not been in the habit of doing, and that will be of value to others, without expectation of pay.

c. Telling at least one other person, each day, of the value of practicing this habit of doing something that ought to be done without being told to do it.

I can see that the muscles of the body become strong in proportion to the extent to which they are used, therefore I understand that the habit of initiative is in the small, commonplace things connected with my daily work, therefore I will go at my work each day as if I were doing it solely for the purpose of developing this necessary habit of initiative.

I understand that by practicing this habit of taking the initiative in connection with my daily work I will be not only developing that habit, but I will also be attracting the attention of those who will place greater value on my services as a result of this practice.

Signed _____________________________________

Regardless of what you are now doing, every day brings you face to face with a chance to render some service, outside of the course of your regular duties, that will be of value to others. In rendering this additional service, of your own accord, you of course understand that you are not doing so with the object of receiving monetary pay. You are rendering this service because it provides you with ways and means of exercising, developing and making stronger the aggressive spirit of initiative which you must possess before you can ever become an outstand figure in the affairs of your chosen field of life-work.

Think and Grow Rich

The Master Key to Riches

Foundations for Success

The Little Book of Leadership

Outwitting the Devil

by Napoleon Hill

Using his legendary ability to get to the root of human potential, Napoleon Hill digs deep to reveal how fear, procrastination, anger, and jealousy prevent us from realizing our personal goals. This long-suppressed parable, once considered too controversial to publish, was written by Hill in 1938 following the publication of his classic bestseller, Think and Grow Rich. Annotated and edited for a contemporary audience by Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Three Feet from Gold co-author Sharon Lechter, this book–now available in paper–is profound, powerful, resonant, and rich with insight.

Your Right to Be Rich

by Napoleon Hill

Dr. Napoleon Hill’s landmark book Think and Grow Rich does not restrict the concept of riches to such narrow parameters as fortune and fame. You have the right to be rich, and you deserve to be rich in every way—personally and spiritually—as well as financially. This seemingly simple idea spawned a philosophy about wealth and success that has permeated every generation since its inception.

Believe and Achieve

by W. Clement Stone

As Executive Director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, I receive many requests from people wanting the original 1937 copy of Think and Grow Rich. To satisfy those of you who desire to have a 1937 unedited copy, we have reproduced Napoleon Hill’s personal copy of the first edition, printed in March of 1937. The book has the notation, “not to be loaned,” and signed: Annie Lou Hill (the wife of Dr. Hill). This personal copy of Dr. Hill’s was given to me by Dr. Charles W. Johnson, Chairman of the Napoleon Hill Foundation and a nephew of Napoleon Hill. It was Napoleon Hill who sent Dr. Johnson to medical school, and today he is a practicing cardiologist. Charlie refers to Napoleon Hill as “Uncle Nap” and will often makes the statement, “Uncle Nap would be proud of the Foundation today.” The original 1937 manuscript was written and edited with the assistance of Napoleon’s wife. In later years, the existing document was again edited by Dr. Hill. For example, the Foundation owns a 1958 edition that Hill edited personally. This did not lessen the book’s value in Hill’s judgment. Hill made the editing remarks in his own handwriting and the resulting 1960 edited edition has sold over 100 million copies making it the most read self-help book of all time
