Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Here is the system that I have personally used for many years to set goals; it will work for you. Each year, toward year-end, I spend some quiet time with a legal pad and pen and write down what I would like to accomplish in the next year, three years, five years, and ten years. I may list many things, but studying them will allow me to determine which are the most important to me. Next, I list the goals on three by five index cards.

For more than 30 years, I have carried these cards in my inside coat pocket. Each day, and sometimes several times a day, I would take the cards out and review them. I would mentally ask myself what I was doing or planning to do that would move me closer to each goal.

Again, the first step is that the goal must be yours and yours alone. It must not be that of your parents, your spouse, or anyone but you. You must claim 100 percent ownership of your goals. Inspiration comes from within ourselves.

Second, the goal must be realistic. Being realistic does not mean that the goal cannot be big. Studying goals, I have discovered that most people set their goals too small, and that this also applies to me.

It costs no more to set big goals than it does to set small ones. Being realistic, for example, means that if you are 60 years old, becoming an all-pro in the NBA is not going to happen. Your desire to be in the professional basketball league is driven by your love for basketball. You can still be around basketball by becoming an employee of a team, a team owner, or an agent. Mark Cuban does not have the talent to be a professional basketball player, but he made hundreds of millions in the technology field, and then bought the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

Next, the goal must have a date attached to it that is written down with the goal. This becomes a contract with yourself. You will need reminders of a time when you were your ideal weight or pictures of someone with what you consider an ideal physique to help motivate you. You must not see yourself as an overweight person, but you need to see yourself at your desired weight.

Goals should be things that require a great deal of effort and that you have a passion to accomplish. They should stretch your talents and imagination because we all do best when we are challenged. You will no doubt discover that goals that help the world become a better place will give you the most satisfaction.

Plans to accomplish your goals may not work at first and may need to be adjusted. After all, we learn from experience, which is the greatest teacher.

I wish you the best,

The Law of Success

This is the sixth of a series of excerpts that focus on the “secret” in Think and Grow Rich. What makes these selections so unique is that a keyword was chosen with an emphasis on the secret that Napoleon Hill so often mentioned. I know you will enjoy reading these powerful excerpts.

ORGANIZED PLANNING
THE CRYSTALLIZATION OF DESIRE INTO ACTION
The Sixth Step toward Riches
by Napoleon Hill

YOU have learned that everything man creates or acquires, begins in the form of DESIRE, that desire is taken on the first lap of its journey, from the abstract to the concrete, into the workshop of the IMAGINATION, where PLANS for its transition are created and organized.

In Chapter two, you were instructed to take six definite, practical steps, as your first move in translating the desire for money into its monetary equivalent. One of these steps is the formation of a DEFINITE, practical plan, or plans, through which this transformation may be made.

You will now be instructed how to build plans which will be practical, viz:—

a) Ally yourself with a group of as many people as you may need for the creation, and carrying out of your plan, or plans for the accumulation of money—making use of the “Master Mind” principle described in a later chapter. (Compliance with this instruction is absolutely essential. Do not neglect it.)

(b) Before forming your “Master Mind” alliance, decide what advantages, and benefits, you may offer the individual members of your group, in return for their cooperation. No one will work indefinitely without some form of compensation. No intelligent person will either request or expect another to work without adequate compensation, although this may not always be in the form of money.

(c) Arrange to meet with the members of your “Master Mind” group at least twice a week, and more often if possible, until you have jointly perfected the necessary plan or plans for the accumulation of money.

(d) Maintain PERFECT HARMONY between yourself and every member of your “Master Mind” group. If you fail to carry out this instruction to the letter, you may expect to meet with failure. The “Master Mind” principle cannot obtain where PERFECT HARMONY does not prevail.

Keep in mind these facts:—

First. You are engaged in an undertaking of major importance to you. To be sure of success you must have plans which are faultless.

Second. You must have the advantage of the experience, education, native ability and imagination of other minds. This is in harmony with the methods followed by every person who has accumulated a great fortune.

No individual has sufficient experience, education, native ability, and knowledge to ensure the accumulation of a great fortune, without the cooperation of other people. Every plan you adopt, in your endeavor to accumulate wealth, should be the joint creation of yourself and every other member of your “Master Mind” group. You may originate your own plans, either in whole or in part, but SEE THAT THOSE PLANS ARE CHECKED, AND APPROVED BY THE MEMBERS OF YOUR “MASTER MIND” ALLIANCE.

If the first plan which you adopt does not work successfully, replace it with a new plan, if this new plan fails to work, replace it, in turn with still another, and so on, until you find a plan which DOES WORK. Right here is the point at which the majority of men meet with failure, because of their lack of PERSISTENCE in creating new plans to take the place of those which fail.

The most intelligent man living cannot succeed in accumulating money—nor in any other undertaking— without plans which are practical and workable. Just keep this fact in mind, and remember when your plans fail, that temporary defeat is not permanent failure. It may only mean that your plans have not been sound. Build other plans. Start all over again. (p149)

OPPORTUNITY has spread its wares before you. Step up to the front, select what you want, create your plan, put the plan into action, and follow through with PERSISTENCE. “Capitalistic” America will do the rest. You can depend upon this much—CAPITALISTIC AMERICA INSURES EVERY PERSON THE OPPORTUNITY TO RENDER USEFUL SERVICE, AND TO COLLECT RICHES IN PROPORTION TO THE VALUE OF THE SERVICE.

Protecting Personal Priorities
by Jim Stovall

Whether you are a top-level corporate executive, a homemaker, a student, or an individual enjoying retirement years, you probably begin each day with a list of things to do. People who do not have a list of daily, weekly, monthly, or annual tasks quite simply baffle me. Either they have a photographic mind, or they are doing very little in their life, or they have a lot of priority items falling through the proverbial cracks. In any event, if we are going to maximize our time, effort, and energy—which in the final analysis is about all we have—we need to establish our priorities, and then we need to protect those priorities.

Every individual needs what I call a personal mission statement. This is what defines who you are and what is important to you in your life. Each of your daily activities must be valued in light of your personal mission statement. We all have the necessary maintenance things that must be done. We have to get our oil changed, get our hair cut, and visit the dentist. These things must work in and around the priorities in our life.

The most productive people I know have no less than four or five priorities in a day and no more than 15 to 20. On a normal day, if you only have one or two things you’re working on, you need to reexamine your priorities or mission statement. If your average day has more than 20 things you have to get done, directly relating to your job or mission in life, you may need to look at delegating or combining some of these tasks.

If you have a high number of daily activities, you at least must prioritize them. This can be done by quickly answering the following questions.

1. If I could only get one thing done today, which one would it be?
2. Is there anyone else who can be doing this other than me?
3. What if this particular item is not done today?
4. What if this particular item is not done at all?
5. Which of my priorities will put me in the best position to get where I want to be tomorrow, next week, next year, etc.?

You must have your priorities firmly established in your mind because, throughout your day, you will run into any number of people who, for whatever reason, have you listed on their priority list. They may be a salesman trying to sell you something, an old friend wanting to reconnect with you, a neighbor or colleague wanting to visit or network, along with any number of other activities in which people want you to engage.

Keep in mind that even valid activities may not be your priorities. If something comes up during the day that is obviously someone else’s priority, it needs to be ranked in your priority list before you can change your plan of action. As you go through your day today, remember—if it’s worth doing, it’s worth prioritizing.

Today’s the day!
