Positive Mental Attitude:
A System of Success

Sign up today!

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

“I am a graduate of my Grandfather’s philosophy. I studied Napoleon Hill for years, reading Think and Grow Rich now eight times. I even used his philosophy to change my life —twice! In spite of this, the course pulled the philosophy all together for me and gave me a deeper understanding!”

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

I never traveled far other than taking a car vacation to a national park, such as the Smoky Mountains. I’d fish in a lake and sleep out on the ground, not staying in a room. We lived a very simple life.

I wanted to get promoted badly, and that meant that I had to transfer to Indianapolis. They sent me plane tickets to go to Louisville to be interviewed by the president of the company. I’d never flown, and I was scared to death to fly on a plane. I’d never been to a place as big as Louisville, and to get a taxi to downtown, check in to a hotel, and go to his office was a big challenge, but I wanted the job badly enough to do it.

Then we moved to Indiana. I can recall the first place they put me in—gosh, it was a dump. My wife wasn’t with me. I had gone a few weeks early to get situated. It was heartbreaking to her to see the place they moved us into, so I immediately found a duplex in the little town of Mooresville, where John Dillinger was from. All of this was traumatic, but I wanted the job badly enough to overcome it. My desire to succeed caused me to overcome any reluctance or fear that I had.

I could have stayed at my old job, and in a few years, one of the other guys may have retired or died or taken another job, but I could see that there was very little activity. The older guys had been around quite a while. I’d got to meet all of them at meetings, and none of them was really up in years. They were probably in their forties, fifties, and sixties.

I was extremely ambitious. I couldn’t wait to get promoted. I didn’t think I was that much smarter, but I was willing to work harder than most of the people I was around. If there is a secret, that’s it—going the extra mile, and then some. In any case, the desire to get ahead outweighed any fear that was trying holding me back.

I wish you the best,

BEFORE you can put any portion of this philosophy into successful use, your mind must be prepared to receive it. The preparation is not difficult. It begins with study, analysis, and understanding of three enemies which you shall have to clear out. These are INDECISION, DOUBT, and FEAR!

The Sixth Sense will never function while these three negatives, or any of them remain in your mind. The members of this unholy trio are closely related; where one is found, the other two are close at hand.

INDECISION is the seedling of FEAR! Remember this, as you read. Indecision crystallizes into DOUBT, the two blend and become FEAR! The “blending” process often is slow. This is one reason why these three enemies are so dangerous. They germinate and grow without their presence being observed.

The remainder of this chapter describes an end which must be attained before the philosophy, as a whole, can be put into practical use. It also analyzes a condition which has, but lately, reduced huge numbers of people to poverty, and it states a truth which must be understood by all who accumulate riches, whether measured in terms of money or a state of mind of far greater value than money. The purpose of this chapter is to turn the spotlight of attention upon the cause and the cure of the six basic fears. Before we can master an enemy, we must know its name, its habits, and its place of abode. As you read, analyze yourself carefully, and determine which, if any, of the six common fears have attached themselves to you.

Do not be deceived by the habits of these subtle enemies. Sometimes they remain hidden in the subconscious mind, where they are difficult to locate, and still more difficult to eliminate.

THE SIX BASIC FEARS

There are six basic fears, with some combination of which every human suffers at one time or another. Most people are fortunate if they do not suffer from the entire six. Named in the order of their most common appearance, they are:—

(These first three are at the bottom of most of one’s worries:)

The fear of POVERTY
The fear of CRITICISM
The fear of ILL HEALTH

The fear of LOSS OF LOVE OF SOMEONE
The fear of OLD AGE
The fear of DEATH

All other fears are of minor importance, they can be grouped under these six headings. The prevalence of these fears, as a curse to the world, runs in cycles. For almost six years, while the depression was on, we floundered in the cycle of FEAR OF POVERTY. During the world war, we were in the cycle of FEAR OF DEATH. Just following the war, we were in the cycle of FEAR OF ILL HEALTH, as evidenced by the epidemic of disease which spread itself all over the world.

Fears are nothing more than states of mind. One’s state of mind is subject to control and direction. Physicians, as everyone knows, are less subject to attack by disease than ordinary laymen, for the reason that physicians DO NOT FEAR DISEASE. Physicians, without fear or hesitation, have been known to physically contact hundreds of people, daily, who were suffering from such contagious diseases as smallpox, without becoming infected. Their immunity against the disease consisted, largely, if not solely, in their absolute lack of FEAR.

Man can create nothing which he does not first conceive in the form of an impulse of thought. Following the statement, comes another of still greater importance, namely, MAN’S THOUGHT IMPULSES BEGIN IMMEDIATELY TO TRANSLATE THEMSELVES INTO THEIR PHYSICAL EQUIVALENT, WHETHER THOSE THOUGHTS ARE VOLUNTARY OR INVOLUNTARY. Thought impulses which are picked up through the ether, by mere chance (thoughts which have been released by other minds) may determine one’s financial, business, professional, or social destiny just as surely as do the thought impulses which one creates by intent and design.

We are here laying the foundation for the presentation of a fact of great importance to the person who does not understand why some people appear to be “lucky” while others of equal or greater ability, training, experience, and brain capacity, seem destined to ride with misfortune. This fact may be explained by the statement that every human being has the ability to completely control his own mind, and with this control, obviously, every person may open his mind to the tramp thought impulses which are being released by other brains, or close the doors tightly and admit only thought impulses of his own choice.

Nature has endowed man with absolute control over but one thing, and that is THOUGHT. This fact, coupled with the additional fact that everything which man creates, begins in the form of a thought, leads one very near to the principle by which FEAR may be mastered.

If it is true that ALL THOUGHT HAS A TENDENCY TO CLOTHE ITSELF IN ITS PHYSICAL EQUIVALENT (and this is true, beyond any reasonable room for doubt), it is equally true that thought impulses of fear and poverty cannot be translated into terms of courage and financial gain.

Years of Life
Jim Stovall

Recently, I got the shocking and disturbing news that a dear friend of mine is facing a life-threatening disease. A million things immediately go through your mind when you get this kind of news. First, you think of what this friend means to you and how their loss would impact your own life and the world around you. Then you go through the parade of thoughts about family, friends, business concerns, and an endless stream of images that assault you.

Thankfully, my friend received an early diagnosis, a quick and successful treatment, and a positive prognosis. Thankfully, above all, my friend is a fighter. If you were taking bets right now on who might live to be 100, I would put a serious wager on my friend’s chances. After the immediate shock and fear that comes with the potential life-threatening news, we all begin to assess our own lives. We are left with the reality that my friend is going to die, I’m going to die, and, my dear reader, you are going to die. As important as it seems to all of us—how many years of life we have—what is infinitely more vital is the question of how much life is in our years.

We all know people who are in their 80s or 90s who are full of life, joy, and optimism. They are looking forward to great things ahead, and they are excited about what life has to offer. On the other hand, we all know people who are barely out of their teen years or early adulthood who seem dull, listless, and have a negative outlook toward the days ahead. I think one of the factors that differentiate the positive from the negative people is how they view the best days of their lives.

Negative people at any age somehow believe the best times of their life are behind them. They are in the process of dying, no matter how many more years their heart continues to beat and how long they take up space here on our planet. Conversely, there are people who have lived a century of life here on earth. They have been everywhere, seen everything, and done everything but still they have a lust for life that energizes everyone fortunate enough to come in contact with them. These people believe that the best days of their lives are still ahead.

Death will find us all someday. May he find you and me excited, energized, passionate, and experiencing everything this existence has to offer. And as for my friend with the troubling diagnosis, he will continue to live life as the gift it is and make a difference for those around him. He will drink deeply from the nectar of life, and I look forward to sharing many of those drinks with him.

Today’s the day!

Master-Key to Riches

Self-Confidence Formula

by Napoleon Hill

Your formula to build a strong sense of self-worth so that you can better recognize opportunity, take action on your dreams, and enhance your resilience.

A lack of self-confidence is one of the greatest maladies of today’s world, one that is responsible for the rampant helplessness, lack of self-control, aimlessness, procrastination, and despair that characterize modern society. But as the venerable steel magnate Andrew Carnegie emphasized to Hill, “Confidence is a state of mind, necessary to succeed, and the starting point of developing self-confidence is definiteness of purpose.”

The time for self-doubt and self-criticism is over. Your faith in yourself and your abilities determines whether you fail or succeed. Napoleon Hill’s Self-Confidence Formula enables you to boost your self-confidence through the application of Hill’s strategies for controlling your thoughts. By implementing these principles, you will not only be able to operate at a higher plane of thought and action—attracting more opportunities, gaining influence, and strengthening relationships—but you will also be able to instill this critical quality in others.

Napoleon Hill’s Self-Confidence Formula gives you the keys to success and fulfillment by equipping you to:

• unlearn fears, insecurities, and limitations acquired in childhood and adolescence
• condition your mind to believe in the certainty of your success
• take bold, confident action on your definite chief aim
• conquer your inferiority complex through the mastermind principle
• build the self-reliance and self-esteem of today’s youth

You are now on the journey to confident, purposeful living. As you implement Hill’s principles, you will cultivate a state of mind primed to accept the abundance reserved for you.
