Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Our mental attitude determines our condition and
every experience we have in life. We can do only
that which we think we can do. What we do,
what we are, and what we have all depend
upon what we think.

W. Clement Stone’s favorite principle of success was Positive Mental Attitude. His own background provided few clues that one day he would become so wealthy that he could give away several hundred million dollars to charitable causes before he died at the age of one hundred.

Stone grew up on Chicago’s rough South Side with his mother, who became a widow before Stone began school. At age 6, Stone was out on the streets of Chicago selling newspapers to contribute to the household income. By the age of 13, he owned his own newsstand. Stone’s life shows the lessons he learned from experience and books while he was growing up.

Stone read Think and Grow Rich! by Napoleon Hill when it was published in 1937. He gave his employees the book, and his insurance firm grew from a $100 investment to a billion-dollar business. Stone spent more than 60 years praising Think and Grow Rich! and its positive effect. He even used as his company’s stock symbol the letters PMA, for positive mental attitude, one of the principles of success.

I believe W. Clement Stone’s great affection for PMA affected every area of his life and this truly made him a wealthy man.

I wish you the best,

Important notice: This principle presents the means by which the entire Science of Success philosophy can best be assimilated and put to practical use. You cannot get the most out of the other sixteen principles without understanding and applying this one. You should study it thoroughly to understand its meaning.

At birth each of us figuratively brings with him two sealed envelopes: one is labeled Rewards, and the other Penalties. In the first envelope is a list of the benefits we may enjoy by taking possession of our own mind and using it for the attainment of the things we desire in life. In the second is a list of the consequences nature will exact from us if we neglect to control our mind and direct it toward desirable, worthwhile objectives.

The foregoing paragraph is so rich in significance that it will pay you to read it, analyze it and meditate on it before you go ahead with the remainder of this lesson. Read it at least three times.

In this lesson we shall break the seals of these two envelopes and present you with their contents. But more important than this, you will discover for yourself that these sealed envelopes are real. They can be the means of putting you on the success beam, enabling you to ride to victory and a destination of your own choosing.

You will not understand the full meaning of this lesson unless you are ready to receive it. And you will not be ready to receive it until you have mastered the six preceding lessons.

There are two things which nature discourages and severely penalizes: (a) a vacuum (emptiness) and (b) idleness (lack of action). Remove any muscle of the body from active use, and it will atrophy (waste away) and become useless. Tie an arm to your side and remove it from action and in time it, too, will wither and become useless. The same law which governs other portions of the body governs the brain, where the vibrations of thought are organized and released.

A positive mind finds a way it can be done, a negative mind looks for all the ways it can’t be done.

You either use your brain for controlled thinking in connection with things you want, or nature steps in and uses it to grow a crop of negative circumstances you do not want. You have a choice in this situation: You can take possession of your thought power, or you can let it be influenced by the stray winds of chance and circumstances you do not desire. But you cannot sit idly by and thus free yourself from the influence of these two sealed envelopes.

Nature allows you to fix your mind on whatever you desire. Nature also allows you to create your own plan for attaining your desire. She crowns all your efforts with those benefits which come in the sealed envelope labeled Rewards. But she discourages idleness and penalizes it wherever it exists.

Out of this truth has grown the saying: Success attracts more success while failure attracts more failure – a truth which you may have observed many times although you may not have analyzed why it happens this way.

If you put your mind to work with a positive mental attitude and believe in success as your right, your belief will guide you unerringly toward whatever your definition of success may be. If you adopt a negative mental attitude and fill your mind with thoughts of fear and frustration, your mind will attract to you the penalties of these undesirable thoughts.

Or you may make no attempt to control and direct your mind, opening it wide to every influence with which you come in contact, and it will yield you the things listed in the second sealed envelope, which are the Penalties you must pay for your neglect to possess and direct your mind.

Now let us open these two sealed envelopes and see what they contain:

(For those who take possession of their minds and direct them toward desirable objectives.)

a. The privilege of placing yourself on the success beam which attracts only the circumstances which make for success.
b. Sound health, both physically and mentally.
c. Financial independence.
d. A labor of love in which to express yourself.
e. Peace of mind.
f. Applied faith which makes fear impossible.
g. Enduring friendships.
h. Longevity and a well-balanced life.
i. Immunity against all forms of self-limitation.
j. The wisdom to understand yourself and others.

(To be paid by those who neglect to take possession of their minds and direct them toward desirable objectives.)

a. Poverty and misery all your life.
b. Mental and physical ailments of many kinds.
c. Self-limitations which bind you to mediocrity all the days of your life.
d. Fear, in all its destructive forms.
e. Dislike of the occupation by which you earn a living.
f. Many enemies, few friends.
g. Every brand of worry known to mankind,
h. A victim of every negative influence you encounter.
i. Subjection to the influence and control of other people at their will.
j. A wasted life which gives nothing to the betterment of mankind.

These lists comprise the catalog of Rewards and Penalties. Which of these lists will you choose as your lot in life?

You must embrace and use the one, or have the other forced upon you. There is no halfway point, no compromise. You are on trial as a citizen of life. You are the judge and the jury – the attorney for the defense and the prosecutor. The final verdict as to what happens to you throughout life will, therefore, be of your own making. There is no higher court of appeals in this world.

A Change of Mind
by Jim Stovall

Several times each month, I get to leave my corporate world job as the president of a television network and travel to an arena or a convention center somewhere in the world to make a speech. In each of these speeches, my main theme is “You change your life when you change your mind.” This seems exceedingly simple as do most profound truths.

Everything you will ever do, know, have, give, and create first begins with a thought in your mind. Every good or bad thought can create an action and a corresponding result. If you want to change any aspect of your life, you first must change your mind.

Your current situation is the result of the thoughts and attitudes as well as the knowledge you have accumulated to this point. One of my favorite quotes from several of the 12 Step programs is, “Your best thinking has gotten you to this point.” This is to say that everything you know and think has brought you to this place in your life. Before you can change where you are, you must change what you think, feel, and know.

Bad thoughts and attitudes do not simply spring up, fully developed, into your mind. Instead, they are the result of emotional erosion over years and decades. In order to change these thoughts, you’re going to have to work on them constantly and experience some discomfort. It is as if you wanted to develop a long-unused muscle. First, you will experience some discomfort, then some soreness, but if you persist you will find yourself in possession of powers you never had before.

I am a firm believer in free enterprise capitalism. I believe the greatest good flows to the most people when they enjoy the fruits of their own efforts; however, if simply as an experiment we divided up all of the money and resources evenly among everyone, within a few short years the money would find its way back to the wealthy and successful people who have it now.

When you understand this phenomenon, you begin to know that money is not the precious commodity. Knowledge and attitude become what we all should seek. If you begin to know things you have never known and hold attitudes that you have never experienced, the success you seek will be soon to follow.

You have heard it said that “if you keep doing the same things, you will get the same results.” Furthermore, if you keep thinking and believing the same things, you will continue to do the same things that have brought you to this place.

As you go through your day today, seek opportunities to learn new things and develop new attitudes.

Today’s the day!

Why leave a legacy when you can live one right now?

When you realize that your success journey is really a journey of giving, you will unlock the potential for profound riches. The world’s top entrepreneurs and leaders derive their success and fulfillment from the alignment of their professional endeavors with their search for meaning and impact. Rather than waiting until they feel they have something to offer, they consistently share their resources to better the lives of others. Now is the time for you to discover your unique gifts and create a giving plan so that you can begin to live your legacy.

The Gift of Giving traces the ultimate giving journeys of Jim Stovall and Don Green, who have implemented Napoleon Hill’s timeless achievement principles to live a legacy of generosity. When Jim Stovall committed to finding a driving passion and giving away $1 million to it, he was a broke college student whose dreams of playing in the NFL had been sidelined by a rare condition causing progressive blindness. With the guidance of the successful businessman Lee Braxton and a worn copy of Think and Grow Rich, Jim brought himself from poverty to prosperity and became an award-winning entrepreneur and philanthropist. His journey connected him with Don Green, the executive director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, who lives out his calling and continues Hill’s work through the Foundation’s many philanthropic efforts. Together, their stories reveal that you can render service and charity at every stage of your giving journey; you simply have to identify opportunities for generosity and take action on them.

You have everything you need to create your legacy. The time has come to live it now, while you can enjoy the gift of giving.
