Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

You cannot expect to be an expert on all topics. Recall the story of Andrew Carnegie, the founder of what became U.S. Steel. Carnegie needed accountants, lawyers, chemists, marketing people, and experts in other areas in which he lacked knowledge. While Carnegie did not know all the answers in steelmaking, he knew enough to select people who could help him become extremely wealthy.

In a true mastermind you should share your ideas with the people of vision who can assist you on your journey to success.

In this excerpt from Napoleon Hill’s Master Course, Napoleon Hill gives us some excellent pointers on the Mastermind Alliance. Remember that the most important ingredients for a true mastermind alliance is the ability to do the job and the ability to work in perfect harmony with others!

I wish you the best,

The First Master Mind Premise
The first premise of the Master Mind principle is that it is the medium through which one may procure the full benefits of the experience, training, education, and specialized knowledge and influence of others as completely as if their minds worked as one. Isn’t it marvelous to contemplate that whatever you lack in education, knowledge, or influence you can always obtain through somebody who has it? The exchange of knowledge is one of the greatest gifts in the world. It’s very nice to engage in business, where the exchange of money makes you a profit, but I would rather exchange ideas with somebody: give them an idea that they didn’t have before and receive in return one that I didn’t have. You of course know that Thomas Edison was perhaps the greatest inventor the world has ever known. He dealt with many of the sciences all the time, and yet he knew nothing about any of them. You’d say it would be impossible for a man to succeed in any undertaking unless he was educated in that field.

The Second Master Mind Premise
The second premise of the Master Mind principle: an active alliance of two or more minds in a spirit of perfect harmony for the attainment of a common objective stimulates each individual mind to a higher degree of knowledge than that which is ordinarily experienced, and prepares the way for that state of mind known as faith.

The human brain is a peculiar piece of machinery; I don’t know that anybody understands it. However, we do know some of the things that can be done with the human brain. We know that the human brain is both a broadcasting station and a receiving station for the vibrations of thought, working on a very similar plan to ordinary radio broadcasting and receiving sets.

We do that when people get together. Whether they call themselves a Master Mind alliance or a church group or a social group, when a group of people get together to express enthusiasm and good humor, there is a meeting of the minds. That meeting steps up the vibrations of each mind, so that if there are fifteen or twenty people in the group or more, each one will tune in and have the benefit of that higher rate of vibration.

The Third Master Mind Premise
The third premise: a Master Mind alliance, properly conducted, stimulates each one in the alliance to move with enthusiasm, personal initiative, imagination, and courage to a degree far above that which the individual experiences when moving without such an alliance.

When you’re going to aim above mediocrity, you need some source to which you can turn to get your batteries charged and keep them charged so that you won’t quit when the going is hard and won’t pay any attention when somebody criticizes you.

Criticism falls off my back just like a water off a duck’s back or like a bullet off a rhinoceros’s head. I’m absolutely immune to all forms of criticism: whether it’s friendly or unfriendly makes no difference to me whatsoever. I became immune because of the relationship with certain people through my Master Mind alliance. If it had not been for the relationship with my stepmother and Mr. Carnegie, I wouldn’t be standing here talking to you folks tonight, you wouldn’t be here as students of this philosophy, and this philosophy would not be spread all over the world helping millions of people, because I had a million opportunities to quit. And every one of them looked very alluring. Sometimes it almost seemed as if I was stupid if I didn’t quit. But I had this marvelous relationship. I could always go back to Mr. Carnegie, I could always run into my stepmother. We’d sit down and have a little chat, and she’d say, “Stand by your guns; you’ll come out on top. I know you will.”

The Fourth Master Mind Premise
The fourth premise: to be effective, a Master Mind alliance must be active. You can’t just form an alliance with somebody and say, “We’ve got it. I’m lined up with this person, that person, and the other person; we’ve got a Master Mind alliance.” It amounts to absolutely nothing until you become active. Every member of the alliance has got to step in and start pitching in mentally, spiritually, physically, and financially—every way that is necessary. They must engage in the pursuit of a definite purpose, and they must move with perfect harmony.

Do you know the difference between perfect harmony and ordinary harmony? I suspect that I have had harmonious relationships with as many people, maybe more, than any person living today. But I want to tell you that perfect harmony in relationships is just about the rarest thing in the world. I think I could count on the fingers of my two hands all of the people that I now know with whom I have a relationship of perfect harmony. I have a nice, polite speaking acquaintance with a lot of people, but that’s not perfect harmony. I have a working alliance with a lot of people, but that’s not perfect or permanent harmony.

Perfect harmony exists only when your relationship to the other fellow is such that if he needed and wanted everything you have, you would willingly and immediately turn it over to him. It takes a lot of unselfishness to put yourself in that frame of mind.

The Fifth Master Mind Premise
The fifth premise: it is a matter of established record that all individual success based upon any kind of achievement above mediocrity is attained through the Master Mind principle and not by individual effort alone.

Do you have any idea how far you would get in the world if in your occupation you decided to stand alone and not depend upon anybody else? Imagine how little you could accomplish if you didn’t have the cooperation of other people.

Suppose you’re in a profession, suppose you’re a dentist or a lawyer or a doctor or an osteopath, and suppose that you didn’t understand how to convert each one of your clients or patients into a salesman for yourself. Imagine how long would it take to build up a clientele. Outstanding professional men understand how to make salesmen out of every person that they serve. They do it all indirectly. They do it by going the extra mile, by going out of their way to be of unusual service, but they do make salesmen out of all of their clients. Emotional touches are the result of personal power, and personal power of sufficient proportions to enable one to rise above mediocrity is not possible without the applications of the Master Mind principle.

The Power of Remarkable Women
Mrs. Henry Ford and Mrs. Thomas E. Edison are two of the outstanding examples that I use time and time again to show what a woman can do to make her husband successful. Had it not been for Mrs. Ford’s understanding of the Master Mind principle (although she didn’t call it with that name), Mr. Ford would never have been known, the Ford Motor Company never would have been here, and I doubt if the automobile industry would have been ushered in as it has been. It was Mrs. Ford that kept him going, kept him alert, and kept him filled with confidence in himself when the going was hard and when other people were criticizing him in connection with this contraption, as they called it, that was only designed to scare horses. Mrs. Ford sustained him through those trying hours when the going was hard. All of you will experience such periods in your life. At some point, the going is hard for everybody. I had over twenty years of it. The marvel is that I had the endurance, spiritually and mentally and physically, to go through what I did. It must have been a great purpose. There must have been somebody looking over my shoulder that I didn’t see.

The Sumter Mastermind
by Lefford Fate

“No man can become a permanent success without taking others along with him!” Dr. Napoleon Hill.

One of the most powerful tools ever used by those who have become successful is the Mastermind Alliance. Napoleon Hill first talked about these groups in his classic book “Think and Grow Rich”. It is the principle that is most mentioned by those who are successful. Whether it be Icons like Andrew Carnegie, Harvey Firestone, or Thomas Edison or the 1990 Chicago Bulls basketball team, when two or more minds come together in perfect harmony towards a definite major purpose, we have a Mastermind.

The Mastermind Principle is critical when it comes to getting things done. Whether you are considering your personal or professional life we can go fast alone but we can go far with a team. Even though I have heard this for years and have practiced it while serving nearly 31 years in the U.S. Air Force, it was revealed to me again in a powerful way just recently. As a certified leader with the Napoleon Hill Foundation I have used the Mastermind Alliance to develop myself and my team professionally. I have also used the process with another group of certified leaders that we call the “Global Team”. But sometimes we cannot see the forest for the trees. I believe this principle can and should be used in all facets of your life.

I live in the city of Sumter in South Carolina and like many communities across the country, we have an issue that many of our young people have not acquired the appropriate “Soft Skills” necessary for basic employment. Based on surveys from high schools, technical schools, colleges, industry, and the military, we have discovered that this is an issue across our community. A bigger issue I believe is that we were addressing the issue in the wrong way. Each one of these entities was trying to tackle this problem on their own. It was not going well. Trying to fix the issue was causing more issues. It was as if we had little splinter cells across the city that were causing more problems than we were fixing. Then enters Ericka Williams from the Economic Development program and the LINK.

Ericka brought people from across our community; industry, manufacturing, city/county government, education, military, and business around the table to develop a program. We called it “Who’s Doing What?” We brought leaders from across our community with one mission, to figure out how we could serve our young people and help them to become successful?

By bringing together the best and brightest in Sumter and determining what we wanted and needed. She focused us in the right direction. I have noticed that many are trying to do the right things. We are trying to solve problems and seeking solutions, but we often try going it alone. As stated earlier we can go fast alone but far with a team. Once we focused on one mission that we could all get behind we started making huge and deliberate gains. We have implemented a “Soft Skills” curriculum from K-12 as well as at the college level in Sumter, our Chamber of Commerce and the City of Sumter have partnered to implement Summer programs. Industry and manufacturing are on the team ensuring that those who practice “Soft Skills” are rewarded for their efforts. Some may see this and say “So What, what’s the big deal?” The big deal is that our young people are our future and our most important asset. Using the Mastermind Alliance principle has changed the direction of our most important resource. When two are more people come together in perfect harmony towards a definite major you can have success. It shouldn’t just be a business idea it can be something much closer to home and this can have a huge impact. I have a few questions and a challenge. How can you use this principle? Who needs to be on the team? When will you start? Find something important to Mastermind in the next 30 days and go for it. This could change your entire community.

Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite

by Napoleon Hill

Based on a series of booklets written by bestselling motivational writer Napoleon Hill, Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite outlines the importance of three essential principles of success: self-discipline, learning from defeat, and the Golden Rule applied.

In 1908, Napoleon Hill met industrialist Andrew Carnegie for what he believed would be a short interview for an article. Instead, Carnegie spent hours detailing his principles of success to the young magazine reporter. He then challenged Hill to devote 20 years to collating a proven formula that would propel people of all backgrounds to happiness, harmony, and prosperity. Hill accepted the challenge, which he distilled in the perennial bestseller Think and Grow Rich.

Now, more than a century later, the Napoleon Hill Foundation is releasing this epic conversation to remind people that there are simple solutions to the problems troubling us most, everything from relationships and education to homelessness and even democracy. This is revealed in three major principles: self-discipline, which shows how the six departments of the mind may be organized and directed to any end; learning from defeat, which describes how defeat can be made to yield “the seed of an equivalent benefit” and how to turn it into a stepping-stone to greater achievement; and the Golden Rule applied for developing rewarding relationships, peace of mind, and a strengthened consciousness.

Each chapter draws on Carnegie’s words and advice as inspiration, with annotations by Napoleon Hill scholar James Whittaker explaining why they are essential for reaching your goals and prospering—for you, your family, and your community.
