Positive Mental Attitude:
A System of Success

The Next Distance Learning Class begins on February 15, 2021.
Sign up today!

Dear Student of Napoleon Hill,

This online distance learning course presents and examines the principles of success researched and developed by Dr. Napoleon Hill and others. It provides a framework for students to better understand life’s opportunities and the need for definiteness of purpose.

The class is based on and structured around Hill’s 17 Principles of Success. Each lesson focuses on one principle and contains online reading assignments, points to ponder, chapter quizzes, Napoleon Hill vintage audio and just released video, articles from the Think and Grow Rich and PMA Adviser newsletters, class discussion questions, journal writing assignments and, other activities that help reinforce the principle being studied. Each student in the class has a personalized relationship with a fully accredited and approved instructor for Napoleon Hill Distance Learning Courses. The class concludes with an assignment dealing with an individualized plan for personal success.

It is because we sincerely feel that every reader of Think and Grow Rich should go on into this post graduate course, that we take the liberty here of giving a few brief side lights upon this brilliant work. Napoleon Hill’s Course presents the true Philosophy upon which all lasting success is built. Ideas, when translated into intelligent plans of action, are the beginning of all successful achievement. So this course proceeds to show you how to create practical ideas for every human need. It does it in easy-to-understand lessons. Napoleon Hill spent the better part of twenty-five years in perfecting this Philosophy of Success.

During the long years he has worked on it, some parts or the whole of it, have been reviewed and praised by many of the greatest Americans of our times. Among them are included four Presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Wm. H. Taft; Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, Wm. J. Wrigley, Alexander Graham Bell, Judge E. H. Gary, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Edward Bok, E.M. Statler — dozens of glowing names in Politics, Finance, Education, Invention.

Don’t waste your own precious years blindly searching for the hidden road to the heights. Profit by the dearly brought experience of America’s leaders. Over 500 great and prominent men of America were minutely analyzed — their methods, motives, strategy — to find out the secrets that put them on top. No matter whether you are rich or poor — you have one asset as great as the richest man living — and that is TIME. But with each setting sun you become one day older, and have one day less in which to attain the success and wealth you desire. Thousands of progressive people throughout the North American continent have realized this mighty truth, and have sought the help so clearly and inspiringly taught in Napoleon Hill. You cannot afford to let day after day slip into eternity, without getting possession of this course. You will profit greatly from the lessons in Think and Grow Rich. You will take even more brilliant and gratifying rewards from this course. The cost is trifling; the benefits are tremendous.

“I am a graduate of my Grandfather’s philosophy. I studied Napoleon Hill for years, reading Think and Grow Rich now eight times. I even used his philosophy to change my life —twice! In spite of this, the course pulled the philosophy all together for me and gave me a deeper understanding!”

Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Gandhi was one of the men Hill admired most. Although they weren’t of the traditional faith, his books obviously appeal to everybody. He made it clear that we all have different belief systems, even in regard to solving problems. This doesn’t mean that one way is necessarily better than others.

If you and I go to lunch, we can take either the back roads or the interstate; there are many different routes to get you there.

Which one is the best? Well, one gets me there the fastest. Another one is the most scenic. Often when my wife and I traveled, we’d get off the interstate and travel on the back roads, because on the interstate, you see a lot of trucks, but you don’t see a whole lot else. On the smaller roads, we’d see little antique places or some other attractions that were worth stopping for. The main thing is that we do have a choice. And we get there.

________

Napoleon Hill emphasized the importance of “the big four.” These “big four” principles are Definiteness of Purpose, Mastermind Alliance, Applied Faith, and Going the Extra Mile. This week Patricia Lazarz, one of our newly certified instructors, writes about how to have an effective Mastermind Alliance. As we continue to cover the principles of success with Napoleon Hill on Applied Faith notice how all these principles of success interrelate with one another!

Applied Faith—the sort of faith that one backs with deeds as well as belief.

Faith is a state of mind that has been called “the mainspring of the soul,” and it is that through which one’s aims, desires, plans, and purposes may be translated into their material equivalent.

Faith begins with the recognition of the existence and the inexorable powers of Infinite Intelligence.

There is no such reality as a blanket faith based upon an unproven hypothesis.

Faith is guidance! It won’t of itself bring you the things you desire. But it can and will show you the path by which you may go after those things.

Through faith you can do anything you believe you can do, provided only that it harmonizes with natural laws.

When Dr. Frank W. Gunsaulus was a young preacher on Chicago’s South Side, his following was small, his income meager. But he had long cherished the idea of building a new type of educational institution where the students would devote half their time to “book learning,” the other half to applying this training in the laboratory of practical experience.

He needed a million dollars to start the project. So he asked for guidance through prayer. His efforts brought him immediate and dramatic results—an idea he believed would give him the money he needed.

He wrote a sermon entitled “What I Would Do with a Million Dollars” and announced in the Chicago newspapers that he would preach a sermon on that subject the following Sunday.

That Sunday morning, before he left his home for his church, he knelt down and offered the most fervent prayer he had ever expressed, requesting that the notice of his sermon would come to the attention of someone who could provide the money he sought.

Then he rushed to his church. As he was ascending the pulpit, however, he discovered that he had left his carefully prepared sermon at home—too far away to be recovered in time to deliver it.

“Right then and there,” said Dr. Gunsaulus, “I offered another prayer, and in a matter of seconds, the answer I desired came. It said, ‘Go into your pulpit and tell your audience of your plan, and tell it with all of your enthusiasm your soul can muster.’”

Dr. Gunsaulus did just that. He described the sort of school he had long wished to organize, how he wished to operate it, the sort of benefits it would render its students, and the amount of money he needed to get it going.

Those who heard the sermon said he never spoke like that before and never again thereafter, for he was speaking as an inspired man with a burning desire to render a great service.

At the end of his sermon, a stranger arose from the rear of the church, walked slowly down the aisle, whispered something in the minister’s ear, then slowly walked back to his seat. There was absolute silence.

Then Dr. Gunsaulus said, “My friends, you have just witnessed one of God’s miracles. The gentleman who just walked down the aisle and spoke to me is Philip D. Armour. He told me if I would come down to his office, he would arrange for me to have the million dollars I need for the school.”

The donation built the Armour School of Technology, of which Dr. Gunsaulus became the head. In recent years, the school has become part of the Illinois Institute of Technology.

“The mystery of the whole thing,” said Dr. Gunsaulus, “was why I waited so long before going to the proper source for the solution of my problem.”

That same mystery has confused many other people who have delayed going to prayer until after everything else had failed to bring the desired results in times of need and emergency.

And this may be one reason why prayer so often brings only negative results, as it generally does when one goes to prayer without true faith, after having met with disaster, or when disaster seems imminent.

Four Steps to a Mastermind
by Patricia Lazarz

A Mastermind Alliance is two or more minds working together in perfect harmony toward a common Definite Major Purpose. No one’s mind is complete by itself and no one has ever attained outstanding success in anything without applying this principle. If you desire to be successful in life you must begin with a Definite Major Purpose and write out your plans for attaining it, you must know where you are going and how you are going to get there. And you must take action with Applied Faith. By doing this you have completed the first step in putting together your mastermind alliance.

Second Step. Next, you should carefully choose the members of your alliance by selecting people who have the ability to do the job and work in a spirit of harmony with others. Some of us may want to choose family members or friends. This is fine as long as they have the qualities you are looking for and not just because you like them. It is crucial that the members of your alliance maintain a Positive Mental Attitude at all times, and can work together in perfect harmony it only takes one person who is not in alignment with the others to cause undue stress, remember this is a meeting of the minds and all must be in agreement or your alliance will suffer.

Step three is very important for keeping perfect harmony, decide from the beginning what rewards will be offered to each member in return for their work, wealth will be the most appealing but also keep in mind that recognition and self-expression are also important rewards.

Step Four. You will need to decide on a place to hold your meetings and a definite time. The amount of time you spend with the members of your alliance is very important; you must stay active in order to grow. A good habit to form when not in meetings with the members of your alliance would be to keep in touch by the way of phone calls, notes, or in passing. You must be fair from the very beginning with all members of your alliance as I mentioned earlier wealth is your best motivator and must be divided willingly and generously among your team. The more generous you are the more others will help you. The principle of Going The Extra mile will serve you well if you incorporate it into your alliance from the beginning. This will inspire confidence, understanding, fairness, justice, and courage. For true success in your Mastermind these four steps are crucial.

Remember to also form a Mastermind Alliance with what Napoleon Hill calls your “higher self.” This is a good way to get to know your own highest desires. Become your own best friend, this way you will always be allied with someone who shares your highest goals. It will be much easier to help someone else if we have first practiced it on ourselves. A mastermind alliance has many benefits and once we recognize this we will understand that those benefits can serve us in many areas. Also learn to cultivate a mastermind alliance with your partner, in studying the principles of success. The key to a mastermind alliance is harmony with all its members and you must work on this constantly in all your alliances When you have been inspired by your “higher self” you can inspire others and bring out the best in them!

For true overall success you must focus your attention on these four major principles: Definiteness of Purpose, Mastermind Alliance, Applied Faith and Going the Extra Mile.

Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite

by Napoleon Hill

Based on a series of booklets written by bestselling motivational writer Napoleon Hill, Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite outlines the importance of three essential principles of success: self-discipline, learning from defeat, and the Golden Rule applied.

In 1908, Napoleon Hill met industrialist Andrew Carnegie for what he believed would be a short interview for an article. Instead, Carnegie spent hours detailing his principles of success to the young magazine reporter. He then challenged Hill to devote 20 years to collating a proven formula that would propel people of all backgrounds to happiness, harmony, and prosperity. Hill accepted the challenge, which he distilled in the perennial bestseller Think and Grow Rich.

Now, more than a century later, the Napoleon Hill Foundation is releasing this epic conversation to remind people that there are simple solutions to the problems troubling us most, everything from relationships and education to homelessness and even democracy. This is revealed in three major principles: self-discipline, which shows how the six departments of the mind may be organized and directed to any end; learning from defeat, which describes how defeat can be made to yield “the seed of an equivalent benefit” and how to turn it into a stepping-stone to greater achievement; and the Golden Rule applied for developing rewarding relationships, peace of mind, and a strengthened consciousness.

Each chapter draws on Carnegie’s words and advice as inspiration, with annotations by Napoleon Hill scholar James Whittaker explaining why they are essential for reaching your goals and prospering—for you, your family, and your community.
